    Skeletal System

What is a skeleton? Is the framework of living

    bones that supports yourbody

We have 206 bones inour bodies

5 basic functions1. Provide shape and support

    2. Allow for movement3. Protects organs

    4. Stores nutrients

    5. Produce blood cells

    Bone Structure

Bone is made of layers of living tissue

Periosteum is a thin fibrous covering

    Compact Bone- hard, strong layer

Spongy Bone- found towards the ends oflong bones filled with Marrow(producesblood cells)

Blood Vessels & Nerves run throughout theinside

    How does a bone or

    muscle attach?

    1. Ligaments Thick band of tissue

    that hold bone together

    2. Tendons Thick bands of tissue that

    What is Cartilage?

    Cartilage

A smooth, stiff, slippery, layer of tissue that

    covers the ends of bones

    Protects bones by providing cushions

    Muscular System

    Muscle

    An organ that can relax,

    contract, and provide the

force to move your body More than 600 muscles

    Two muscles groups

    3 Types of Muscle

    1. Skeletal attaches and moves

    bone

    Striated or bandedmuscles

    Voluntary muscles

    2. Smooth Involuntary muscles that

    surround organs andblood vessels

    3. Cardiac Muscle around the heart

    Involuntary muscle

    kinds of Joints

    1. Immoveable joint

    Bones in the skull

    2. Pivot Joint

Rotation of one joint on another

    Example turning your head

    3. Ball & socket joint

    Circular motion

    Example shoulder and hip

    4. Hinge joint

    Movement forward and backward

    Example elbow and knee

    5. Gliding joint

    One bone glides over another

    Example wrist & vertebrate

Joints the placewhere two bones meet

    Holds bone in place!!
