Five minutes after the ‘Caps broke the MLS record for most minutes to start a season without conceding a goal, the Quakes pulled even. Chris Wondolowski got behind the Vancouver defense, held off defender Jay DeMerit, then ran onto a throw-in from left back Ramiro Corrales and chipped 'Caps goalkeeper Joe Cannon.

Then, in the 72nd minute, Corrales dialed a cross into the box, and second-half substitute Alan Gordon answered with a diving header to give San Jose the lead.

Wondolowski hammered the final nail into the coffin in the 78th minute. Tressor Moreno found the striker at the back post with a cross from a free kick, and Wondolowski simply redirected it into the net on the volley.

Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie made two changes to the team that played to a second successive goalless draw, against Philadelphia Union at PPL Park. Gershon Koffie and Eric Hassli returned to the side, in place of Matt Watson and the suspended Atiba Harris.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC (4-4-2): Joe Cannon - Lee Young-Pyo, Jay DeMerit, Martin Bonjour, Jordan Harvey - Davide Chiumiento, Gershon Koffie, Jun Marques Davidson (Camilo 76), John Thorrington (Matt Watson 79) - Sebastien Le Toux, Eric Hassli.

TEAM NEWS Whitecaps FC saw their MLS club-record undefeated streak come to an end at four games. “Second half, we obviously started the half very well, and got a good goal,” head coach Martin Rennie said.

“From nowhere in a short space of time, we switched off and we’ve lost three goals and lost the game. In many ways, the difference was [Chris] Wondolowski scored two goals out of nothing, and that changed the game, in my opinion.”

Whitecaps FC saw their record-setting shutout streak to start a season ended at 426 minutes, five more than the New York Red Bulls achieved in 2007.

“It’s not something we can ignore,” goalkeeper Joe Cannon said. “We have to look at it and learn from it. We get paid to play this game, and I don’t think it’s smart to just throw anything under the rug, even if you win. We’re still in the early going here and I think we just have to look at that game for what it is and move on.”

After two games without scoring a goal – or hitting the net (Whitecaps FC were not credited with a single goal attempt on target in either scoreless draw vs. Philadelphia or D.C. United) – Vancouver was credited with six shots on goal vs. San Jose.

“I think tonight we played our best stuff,” captain Jay DeMerit said. “We created the most chances and got forward the best we have all season. If we could combine the past few games we played defensively, and then combined with how we did offensively tonight, those are things we can take forward into [our next game].”

Sebastien Le Toux scored his second goal of the season, his first since netting just seconds into the season opener against Montréal. It was Vancouver’s first goal in 251 minutes – the third-longest streak without a goal thus far in MLS this season.

“We played better than I think all the games we played away [so far],” Le Toux said to Vancouver radio station TEAM 1410. “We found ourselves in a pretty good situation [going up 1-0], so I think things are getting better and better.”

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City extended their winning streak to start the 2012 season to six games, getting the game’s only goal in a victory against Real Salt Lake on Saturday evening at Livestrong Sporting Park. Sporting have 18 points from 6 matches to lead the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH

The game's lone goal came after 63 minutes. Graham Zusi flighted in a corner from the left and Aurelien Collin slashed in at the back post to head it home. It was Collin’s second goal of the year, both coming on headers off set-piece assists from Zusi.

SKC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen was called upon to make just one save on the night, a routine stop of a Nat Borchers header from Kyle Beckerman’s free kick in second-half stoppage time that ended Sporting's league-record string of not allowing a shot on goal at 335 minutes.

Sporting head coach Peter Vermes made no changes to his team for a fourth match in a row, maintaining the side that defeated the LA Galaxy 1-0 at Livestrong Sporting Park.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic (Michael Harrington 89) - Julio Cesar (Paulo Nagamura 51), Roger Espinoza - Kei Kamara, Graham Zusi, Bobby Convey (Jacob Peterson 82) - C.J. Sapong.

TEAM NEWS Sporting Kansas City is just the second club to have taken maximum points through six games – after the 1996

Los Angeles Galaxy, who won their first nine games in regulation time. The 1998 Galaxy also started with nine games unbeaten – but won the opener in a shootout (worth one point in the standings).

“At the end of the day, we found a way to get the goal in the second half. A fantastic three points for the guys,” said KC manager Peter Vermes. “Now we are going on a weeklong road trip. It won’t be easy but we have a good situation going right now and we have to keep it going.”

Sporting faced one shot on goal– their first in 335 minutes (an MLS record). Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen has been called upon to make just eight saves in SKC’s first six games.

“I don’t think that I’ve seen anything like that before in my life. That’s credit to the whole organization and the team,” said Nielsen. “Our defense starts with C.J. (Sapong), and if he’s in good position, he’s making the midfielders’ job easy. And if the midfielders’ job is easy, that makes the defenders’ job easy. And if the defense is in good position, it makes my job very, very easy.”

Said Vermes: “Defensively, our back line was very attentive and concentrated. Collin and Besler did a very good job against their two central strikers and didn’t give them anything. The header at the end was actually offside, though the center official waved it off. They actually did not get a shot on goal.”

MLS GAME INFORMATION

While extending their season-opening winning streak to seven games, Sporting Kansas City also lengthened their current shutout streak to 337 minutes – second in MLS this season (behind Vancouver’s 426).

“There are a lot of things that go into that (shot on goal) record: all 11 of us defending as a whole, applying pressure, even a little luck,” said defender Matt Besler. “The most important thing for us is the shutout streak. Shutting teams out gives us a chance to win every week.”

Sporting KC have scored three of their nine goals from set pieces. Two have come from corner kicks – both of the goals scored by Collin – and one on a free kick.

“It’s never an easy thing to score on a corner kick,” Vermes said. “Here’s the reason: You’re not only fighting a crowd. There’s a guy usually holding on to you. Maybe we’re the only ones who hold in games, but at the end of the day it’s not an easy thing.”

After seeing his five-game streak with an assist come to an end, Graham Zusi collected his sixth assist of the season in the 1-0 win against Real Salt Lake, giving him the MLS lead. “There’s four or five guys I can get it to on set pieces,” Zusi said. “Like I always say, I just try to put it in a dangerous spot, and those guys do the rest.”

After maintaining the same first XI since the New England game, Vermes could be forced into a change in Vancouver. Holding midfielder Julio Cesar was forced from the field early in the second half against RSL.

“I do not think it is a very serious pull. I think it is more of a strain. We will just evaluate him over the course of the next couple days and then we will make a decision but he’s a very important guy for the team,” said Vermes. “But at the same time, the biggest thing for me when we have muscle injuries is that we need to shut down a guy and wait until he is 100 percent to bring him back. I don’t think he will be ready for Wednesday, plus travel, so we will have to figure it out.”

ABOUT WHITECAPS FC In 1974, Vancouver Whitecaps FC played their inaugural season in the North American Soccer League, and in 1979, the club won the NASL Soccer Bowl championship. Following the demise of the NASL in 1984, Vancouver 86ers were founded in 1986 and from 1987 to 1992 the club won four Canadian Soccer League titles. In 1993, Vancouver joined the North American second division after the disbandment of the CSL. In 2001, the club reverted back to the Whitecaps and the following season added FC to their official name while creating a full club model that encompasses professional teams for men and women, extensive youth development and grassroots participation programs, facility development, and the Whitecaps Foundation to support specific initiatives related to health and wellness through soccer. Since 2004, Whitecaps FC have won two United Soccer Leagues First Division championships and two USL W-League championships. Whitecaps FC were the 17th club admitted to Major League Soccer on March 18, 2009, and on March 10, 2011, Vancouver kicked off their inaugural year in MLS at Empire Field before moving into the new BC Place Stadium in downtown Vancouver. Vancouver finished the 2011 season with a record of 6W-18L-10D. 2012 is Vancouverʼs 37th season of professional soccer, and 26th consecutive season. Whitecaps FC are the longest running pro soccer club in United States and Canadian history. WHITECAPS FC PR CONTACTS Carly Jokic 604.669.9283 x 2287 604.753.8915 [email protected]

MATCH NOTES This is the third MLS meeting between Whitecaps FC and Sporting Kansas City. The two previous MLS encounters took place during the 2011 season: Vancouver and Kansas City drew 3-3 at Empire Field on April 2 before Sporting KC defeated Whitecaps FC 2-1 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kansas, on June 25. WHITECAPS FC NOTES As a member of the MLS Eastern Conference, tonightʼs visit of leaders Sporting Kansas City is the only regular season meeting between the two clubs. Tonightʼs match is also the first of two league matches on Bell Pitch at BC Place this week. Following the visit of Sporting KC, Whitecaps FC will host Western Conference rivals FC Dallas this Saturday night. Two weeks tonight, Whitecaps FC will embark on their quest to win their first-ever Voyageurs Cup title in the 2012 Amway Canadian Championship. Vancouver will take on North American Soccer League side FC Edmonton in a two-match, aggregate-goal semifinal series. The first leg will take place at Edmontonʼs Commonwealth Stadium on Wednesday, May 2, while the decisive second leg is set for BC Place on Wednesday, May 9. The winners of the Whitecaps FC versus FC Edmonton semifinal series will face the winner of the all-Eastern Canadian semifinal series between MLS rivals Montreal Impact and Toronto FC. The winners of this yearʼs Canadian Championship will represent Canada in the 2012-13 edition of the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL). Toronto FC reached the semifinals of the 2011-12 CCL before falling to Mexicoʼs Club Santos Laguna.

Striker #9 Atiba Harris is available for this eveningʼs match after serving a one-match suspension during the 3-1 defeat at Western Conference rivals San Jose Earthquakes on Apr. 7. On Apr. 8, Harris scored the winning goal for Whitecaps FC reserves, as they defeated hosts San Jose Earthquakes reserves 2-1 in the MLS Reserve League. Midfielder #13 Michael Nanchoff and striker #8 Etienne Barbara returned to full training last week after lengthy injury lay-offs. However, both players are unlikely to be available for tonightʼs match. Whitecaps FC left fullback #4 Alain Rochat will miss tonightʼs match with a left knee sprain, while striker #22 Darren Mattocks will also miss the Sporting KC match-up, as he continues his recovery from burns to his upper right arm and shoulder. Goalkeeper #24 Brian Sylvestre is also unavailable, as he continues his recovery from knee surgery. Midfielder #26 Floyd Franks is listed as doubtful with lower back pain. Whitecaps FCʼs second Designated Player - midfielder Barry Robson - will be joining the club in July 2012 following the completion of the 2011-12 season with English League Championship side Middlesbrough FC.

ABOUT WHITECAPS FC VERSUS SPORTING KANSAS CITY This is the third meeting between Whitecaps FC and Sporting Kansas City, with both clubs first facing each other in MLS last season. Their inaugural meeting at Empire Field on Apr. 2, 2011, became one of the most memorable matches in Whitecaps FC history. After two goals by Teal Bunbury and a strike by Kei Kamara gave Sporting KC a three-goal lead, Whitecaps FC staged a remarkable comeback to earn an improbable 3-3 draw. Atiba Harris scored first before Camilo Sanvezzo dramatically struck twice in second-half stoppage time to earn a point for Vancouver. The next meeting went Kansas Cityʼs way on June 25, 2011. Though Camilo gave the ʻCaps an early lead at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, goals by Mexican international Omar Bravo and Brazilian defender Julio Cesar gave Sporting KC a 2-1 victory. Their last encounter was in preseason, with Whitecaps FC defeating Sporting KC 3-0 at the Disney Pro Soccer Classic in Orlando, Florida, on Feb. 29. Date Location Result Attend. WHITECAPS FC AND KANSAS CITY PLAYER CONNECTIONSSporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury was born in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. His Father is Guyanese-born Canadian Alex Bunbury, a professional soccer player with the sixth most all-time caps for the Canadian men's soccer team. Having dual American/Canadian citizenship, Bunbury made the decision to join the U.S. National Team after representing Canada at youth level with the Canadian U-17 and U-20 National Teams. Both Bunbury and Whitecaps striker Darren Mattocks were top scorers during their time with University of Akron. Bunbury would tally 23 goals in 48 appearances with the Zips from 2008-09, while Mattocks would notch 39 goals in his 47 college appearances in 2010-11. Like Vancouver strikers Sébastien Le Toux and Eric Hassli, Sporting KC defender Aurélien Collin is a native of France. Collin also spent the 2007-08 season playing for Gretna FC of the Scottish Premier League, while Whitecaps FC designated player and midfielder Barry Robson played for rival side Dundee United before later being traded to Celtic FC. The two players would meet on the pitch twice during that time, first on Sep. 22, 2007 When Collinsʼ team Gretna would defeat Dundee 3:2, with Robson picking up an assist on his corner kick. The two would meet again on Dec. 22, 2007 when Dundee would once more fall to Gretna 2:1. Sporting Kansas City midfielder Bobby Convey and Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Joe Cannon were teammates with San Jose Earthquakes from 2009 to 2010, while Sporting Kansas City striker Kei Kamara played alongside Cannon with the Quakes in 2008. Kansas City midfielder Jacob Peterson and Cannon were also teammates in 2006 with Colorado Rapids. The pair would help the Rapids to the Western Conference Championship before they fell to eventual MLS Cup champions Houston Dynamo. Peterson also competed against Whitecaps FC in the 2011 Canadian Championship during his tenure with Toronto FC making the start in a 1:1 draw during the first leg of a two-leg championship match on May 18, 2011.

In the 2005-06 season of the English Championship League Convey played for Reading FC while Whitecaps FC centre fullback Jay DeMerit played for Watford FC. The two would both get the start in a scoreless match on Mar. 11, 2006. Both playersʼ teams were promoted to the English Premier League for the 2006-07 season where Whitecaps FC right fullback Young-Pyo Lee was playing for Tottenham FC, but neither DeMerit nor Lee would play against Convey that season. In the 2007-08 season of the English Premier League Lee and Convey would square-off twice, both got the start first on Dec. 29, 2007 when Tottenham would defeat Reading 6:4; then again in a third-round FA Cup match on Jan. 5, 2008 when the two sides would tie 2:2. Kansas City right fullback Chance Myers, defender Shawn Singh, and Vancouver defender Jordan Harvey all played college soccer with UCLA. Myers made 42 appearances for the Bruins from 2006-07, Singh would appear in 56 matches from 2009-11, and Harvey made 69 appearances from 2002-05. Sporting defender Lawrence Olum has been competing against Whitecaps FC every season since 2007, beginning with his time at the Portland Timbers (USL-1) from 2007-08; Minnesota Thunder (USL-1) in 2009; Austin Aztex (USSF D2) in 2010 and finally with Kansas City in 2011. Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi and striker Camilo Sanvezzo both earned Major League Soccer (MLS) Player of the Week honours in 2011. Camilo was credited after scoring a brace against Sporting Kansas City in Week Three, while Zusi was given the nod for tallying two goals of his own in a 3-1 win over Portand Timbers in Week 23. Both 'Caps defender Greg Klazura and Kansas City midfielder Michael Thomas captained their University of Notre Dame squads. Klazura made 44 appearances for the Fighting Irish from 2009-11, while Thomas appeared 83 times from 2006-09.

KANSAS CITY CONNECTIONS

Sporting Kansas City came away with the 2-1 come-from-be-hind victory last time these two squads met. The game was played at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park on June 25, 2011 in front of a sell-out crowd of 18,467 people.

ThevisitorsgotontheboardfirstwhenCamilocapitalizedonaDavide Chiumiento free kick in the 15th minute of play. Camilo’s headergoalmarkedthefirstgoalSportingKansasCityhadcon-ceded at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park since its opening on June 9, 2011. However, Camilo’s goal would not go unanswered by a resilient SKC side.

It was Omar Bravo who notched the equalizer on a penalty kick after Jay DeMerit took him down in the box. Bravo stepped up to the spot and pushed the ball past Cannon into the back of the net.

Sporting Kansas City struck again just seven minutes later on a Graham Zusi corner kick. Zusi connected with Bravo on the backpost who redirected the ball to the middle of the penalty areaforJulioCesarwhoslidforafirst-timefinishfrom12yardsout.ThegoalmarkedCesar’sfirstofhisMLScareerandwouldstandasthefinalgoalofthematchtobescoredbyeitherteam.

• Vancouver Whitecaps FC Jordan Harvey played college ball at UCLA from 2002-2005. Sporting KC players Chance My-ers and Shawn Singh also played collegiate ball for UCLA, however not until after Harvey was gone.

• Vancouver’s Greg Klazura was a member of the University of Notre Dame Men’s Soccer Program from 2007-2011. While there he was teammates with Sporting Kansas City’s Matt Besler who played for the Fighting Irish from 2005-2008 and Michael Thomas who played from 2006-2009.

• Vancouver Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Brad Knighton was born in Hickory, North Carolina just four hours away from Sporting Kansas City defender Michael Harrington, who was born in Greenville, NC.

• KnightonfirstjoinedMLSplayingforNewEnglandRevolu-tion. SKC defender Seth Sinovic also started his MLS career with the Revolution, however the two players time with the Revs did not overlap.

• Vancouver’s Sebastien Le Toux and Sporting’s Aurelien Col-lin are both originally from France. Le Toux and Collin were born an hour and a half away from each other with Le Toux being born in Mont-Saint-Aignan, while Collin is from Enghien-les-Bains.

• Sporting Kansas City forward Teal Bunbury and Vancouver Whitecaps FC forward Darren Mattocks both enjoyed two seasons at the University of Akron. Both student-athletes left college before entering their junior year, earning Gen-eration adidas contracts and SuperDraft selection. The two Zips would have shared two seasons together should Bun-bury have stayed for a full four years, but due to his deci-sion to go professional at the conclusion of his 2009 season Bunbury just missed Mattocks two-year stint at Akron start-ing in 2010. However, Bunbury was teammates with Van-couvermidfielderMichael Nanchoff during the 2008 and2009 seasons.

• Sporting Kansas City has scored five goals in just twogames against the Whitecaps, conversely, Vancouver has tallied four goals against KC in the same pair of games.

Undefeated Streak Continues | Sporting Kansas City is currently in firstplaceoftheEasternConference.KCistheonlyteamwitha6-0-0 record at the conclusion of week six and becomes the second team in MLS history to go 6-0-0 in regulation to start the season, along with the LA Galaxy circa 1996.

In Wednesday’s match, Sporting Kansas City face the Vancouver Whitecaps FC of the Western Conference. This match marks Sport-ingKC’sfifthofsixstraightmatcheswithopponentsfromtheWest.So far, Kansas City is four for four against Western Conference op-ponents in 2012 and with a victory on Wednesday, Sporting Kansas City would extend their winning sreak to seven.

Defensive Display | SportingKansasCityhasearnedfiveshutoutsin their first six games of the 2012 season conceeding just onegoal. The defense led by captain Jimmy Nielsen and centerbacks Matt Besler and Aurelien collin has also allowed the fewest shots by any MLS team this season (46). Seth Sinovic and Chance Myers round out the back line for KC yet both play a vital role in the KC attack, each tallying one assist so far this year.

The limited number of shots is impressive, yet perhaps more re-markable is Sporting KC’s ability to pressure opponents all over the fieldtopreventqualityattackingopportunitiesforopposingsqauds.Sporting Kansas City had not allowed a shot on goal in 335 minutes of soccer, holding Chivas USA and LA Galaxy without a shot on goal foranentirematch, whileRealSaltLakedidnotearntheirfirstshoton goal until second half stoppage time.

To put this in perspective, Kansas City has only been able to hold an opponent without a shot on goal for an entire game three other times in the club’s exsistance. And the last time a team was able to hold LA Galaxy without a shot on goal was on May 31, 2003. Futhermore, the streak sets a new MLS all-time record, surpassing the previous mark of 185 minutes.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC |AsVancouverfinds themselves in themidst of just their second season of MLS competition, they also go into Wednesday’s match averaging two goals per game against a Sporting Kansas City side. The teams have played just twice before and with one match at home for each side.

Although Sporting Kansas City came away with the victory in the last meeting between the two teams, SKC wasn’t as fortunate last time the two sides met at BC Place. SKC went up 2-0 on a pair of goals from Teal Bunbury. A third goal was added in the 63rd minute

by Kei Kamara.

However, the 3-0 lead wasn’t enough to get SKC the win as Vancou-ver scored three second half goals to leave both teams with just one point and a 3-3 draw at the conclusion of the contest.

Besler up for Man of the Year | Matt Besler joins forces with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during the months of March, April and May for the Man of the Year Campaign in a ten-week fundraising competition to earn the LLS’s Man of the Year title by raising funds for blood cancer research.

Set Pieces | Sporting Kansas City came one shy of matching the all-timeclubhighforcornerkickstakeninthefirsthalfofamatchlastSaturday with 9 attempts. However, it wasn’t until the second half and 10th attempt that Graham Zusi was able to connect with Aure-lien Collin to put Sporting in the lead against Real Salt Lake.

The assist marks Zusi’s 6th already this season, four of which were game-winning. Zusi leads MLS in assists and game-winning assists in 2012 and is moving up the club’s all-time charts, tied for 15th and 5th in that order.

Sports Team of the Year | Sporting Kansas City has been nominated by the 2012 SportsBusiness Awards for Sports Team of the Year. In addition, LIVESTRONG Sporting Park received nomination for Sports Facility of the Year. The winners of Street and Smith’s Sports-Business Journal 2012 awards will be announced on May 23, 2012 at the New York Marriott Marquis at Times Square.

TheStadiumBusiness Awards | Sporting Club CEO Robb Heineman was nominated for Executive of the Year and LIVESTRONG Sporting Park earned nominations in four categories including Venue of the Year. The club’s state-of-the-art LIVESTRONG Sporting Park gar-nered recognition alongside venues on four different continents with its consideration for Venue of the Year. LSP was also nominated for the Customer Experience Award, the Community Award and the New Venue Award.
