Purpose for our challenges

• PURPOSE

• To ensure that you are following and understanding the science that

relates to your project so far.

• To ensure that you are able to discuss the science in a competent

way as you will need this to prepare for the Skate park Expo.

• You will need to explain the science as you prepare your posters for the

Expo.• Skate park Expo will be held at the

end of the project.

CHALLENGES 2013

• Let ‘s pause for a minute to see if these ideas are making

sense…

Page 4: SKATEBOARD SCIENCE CHALLENGES

CHALLENGE 1

• Imagine a large hydroelectric dam and generator high in the mountains.

You’re at home listening to your stereo which is plugged into an electric outlet that is fed by the

hydroelectric dam and generator.• What is the original source of the sound energy

that you are hearing?Hint…always work backwards from the source.• You must use the words:

1. sun 6. heat energy 11. 100 2. kinetic energy 7. energy out3. electrical energy 8. heat energy4. energy in 9. sound energy5. sound energy 10. potential energy

Page 5: SKATEBOARD SCIENCE CHALLENGES

CHALLENGE 1 MODEL

• 1. __________ energy comes from _______ energy in the stereo.

• 2. _________ energy comes from_________ energy of water rushing through the generators.

• 3. _________energy comes from__________ energy of water behind the dam.

• 4. __________energy comes from the sun’s ________ energy that evaporated from the oceans to make rain.

• 5. _____________equals ____________.• 6. If no energy was diverted along this

path, 100 units of _________energy must have begun as _________units of _________energy from the ______.

Page 6: SKATEBOARD SCIENCE CHALLENGES

CHALLENGE 2

• Lola lifts a bowling ball from the ground and holds it. Trace the

energy back to the original source as you did in Challenge 1.

• You must use: • 1. potential energy• 2. kinetic energy• 3. light energy• 4. chemical energy

Page 7: SKATEBOARD SCIENCE CHALLENGES

Challenge 2 MODEL

1. ____________energy comes from __________energy of moving muscles.

2.____________energy comes from _________ energy of the food that Lola ate.

3. ___________energy comes from __________energy from the sun (through photosynthesis).

Page 8: SKATEBOARD SCIENCE CHALLENGES

CHALLENGE 3

• Lola is not a good bowler! Instead of rolling the ball

down the bowling alley, she dropped the ball beside her.

If her ball possessed potential energy when she held it high, where is that

energy now?Write an equation which shows

the entire process.

Challenge 1 ANSWER

• 1. Sound energy comes from electrical energy in the stereo.

• 2. Electrical energy comes from kinetic energy of water rushing through the generators.

• 3. Kinetic energy comes from potential energy of water behind the dam.

• 4.Potential energy comes from the sun’s heat energy that evaporated from the oceans to make rain.

• 5. Energy in equals energy out.• 6. If no energy was diverted along this path,

100 units of sound energy must have begun as 100 units of heat energy from the sun.

CHALLENGE 2 ANSWER

1. Potential energy comes from kinetic energy of moving muscles.

2.Kinetic energy comes from chemical energy of the food that Lola ate.

3.Chemical energy comes from light energy from the sun (through photosynthesis).

Challenge 3 ANSWER

• When the ball dropped everyone could hear the crash. The potential energy was transformed into the BANG!

• Some potential energy was converted into sound energy, but the impact with the floor caused the wood to become warmer-The potential energy was converted also to heat.

• EQUATION:Potential energy= Heat energy+ Sound energy
