• Despiteuniversityimpaction,studentsintheMinorProgramcompletetheiracademicprogramsefficiently.ByMay2014,31studentswillhavegraduatedfromSJSUwiththeHumanRightsMinorcredential.Theeaseofcompletionisfurtherevidencedbyadropoutrateofonly6%since2012.
• CorecoursesintheMinor(JS25,JS171,SOCI118,JS179)continuetofillto(andoftenbeyond)capacity.EnrollmentisexpectedtoincreaseasJS25becomesalowerdivision(D3)GEcourseinthecomingAYs.
• HumanRightsWorkingGroupmembership,availablesubstantiveelectivecoursesintheMinorProgram,andpartnershipswithcommunityorganizationsforHumanRightsActionProjects(JS179)continuetoexpand.
• ThankstosupportfromtheCollegeofAppliedSciencesandArts[CASA]andtheDepartmentofJusticeStudies,wearehappytoannouncethenewhireoftenuretrackfacultymember,Dr.EdithKenney(see“NewFacultySpotlight”)Dr.Kinney’sresearchandinstructionwillbringvaluedresourcestotheHumanRightsandCriticalLegalStudiesMinorProgramsinfall2014.

About the Minor in Human Rights: TheMinorinHumanRightsisamultidisciplinary15-unitminoratSJSU.StudentsintheMinorhavetheopportunitytoexplorethehistoryandstructureofhumanrightsandinternationallaw,studyanynumberofhistoricalorcontemporaryhumanrightsstruggles,meetandworkwithBayAreahumanrightsorganizations,andgainexperienceinagraduatestylesymposiumcourse.Studentsinterestedincareersorgraduatestudyrelatedtointernationallaw,internationalrelations,internationaldiplomacy,policystudies,humanrightsadvocacy/reporting,forensicreportingonwarcrimes/genocide/crimesagainsthumanity,communityorganizing,socialmovementnetworks,orsocialsciencesarehighlyencouragedtoenroll.
TheMinorProgramisadministeredbytheDirector,Dr.WilliamArmaline.DecisionsonProgramsubstance,curriculum,direction,activities,andgoalsaremadeinconsultationwiththeHumanRightsWorkingGroup—adiversecollectiveofSJSUscholarsandinstructorsdedicatedtopublicintellectualismandtherealizationofhumanrightspractice.ParticipationintheWorkingGroupisopen,voluntary,anddemocratic.AnyinstructionalfacultyorgraduatestudentsworkingonhumanrightsrelevantresearchwhowouldliketojointheWorkingGroupshouldemailDirectorArmalineattheirconvenience.WeareparticularlylookingformembershipfromPoliticalScience,History,EnvironmentalScience,Psychology,MexicanAmericanStudies,andtheSocialSciences(AfricanAmericanStudiesandWomen’sStudiesinparticular).
TheMinorProgrambeganenrollingstudentsinfall2012.Wearehappytoreportthataswebeginthe2014calendaryear,theMinorProgramhasgrownandblossomedbeyondexpectations:•Initialenrollmentgoalsforfall2012were15-20minors,wenowenjoyconsistentenrollmentofapproximately60studentsfromawidevarietyofcollegesanddepartments.Betweenpromotionaleffortsinthespring/summerof2014andexpandedoutreachinthe2014-15AY,weexpectenrollmenttoexceed75.SuchsustainedgrowthisabsolutelyuniquefornewprogramsatSJSU,particularlygiventhatwehavesofaroperatedwithnodedicatedfundingstream,universityspace,oradministrativesupport.

JS179:HumanRightsPracticumandSeminar(3units)
Thefirstpartofthiscourseisdesignedmuchlikeagraduateseminar,wherestudentsreviewanddeconstructcuttingedgescholarshipinthefieldofhumanrights.Thisistoprovidepreparationforgraduatestudy.
Thesecondpartisaservice-learningcomponentwherestudentsworkinteamsof3-6onapre-determinedHumanRightsActionProjectincollaborationwithacommunityorganizationalpartner.TheseprojectsmeetourUniversitymissionandProgramgoalsbydirectlyengagingwiththeneedsofthelocalcommunitiesweserveasaCSU.Further,byworkingdirectlywithareahumanrightsorganizationsstudentsexpandtheirprofessionalnetworksandemploymentchancesinappliedfields.StudentsinthecapstonecoursearespearheadingandsupportingongoinghumanrightsactionprojectswithorganizationsliketheSanJosePeaceandJusticeCenter,FreshLifelinesforYouth(FLY),CommUniverCity/Garden2Table,andtheACLUofNorthernCA.ProjectswiththeRedCrossofSantaClaraCounty,theSantaClaraCountyCommission/OfficeofHumanRelations,andCarrytheVisionwilljoinmanymoreinthe2014-15academicyear.

Dr.EdithKinneywillbejoiningtheJusticeStudiesDepartmentinFall2014asanAssistantProfessor.CurrentlythePre-LawAdvisorandVisitingAssistantProfessorinSocialSciencesatMillsCollegeinOakland,Dr.KinneyreceivedherPh.D.inJurisprudence&SocialPolicyfromtheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeley(2011)andherJ.D.fromBerkeleyLaw(2006).AsaFulbrightFellowinThailand,Dr.Kinney’sfieldworkexaminedthestrategicmobilizationoflawandhumanrightsbygrassrootsactivistsandstatesecurityandsocialwelfareofficialsincampaignstoaddresshumantrafficking.HerworkhasappearedintheBerkeleyJournalofGender,Law&JusticeandGender,Violenceandhumansecurity:Criticalfeministperspectives(Eds.AiliMariTripp,MyraMarxFerreeandChristinaEwig,NYUPress,2013),andPowerplays:Rethinkingthepoliticsofsexwork(Eds.SamanthaMajicandCarisaShowden,UniversityofMinnesotaPress,2014).Dr.Kinney’scurrentresearchprojectsexplorethedynamicinteractionsoflawandsociety,focusedparticularlyontherolesocialmovementorganizationsplayincriminaljusticereformathomeandabroad.ShelooksforwardtocontributingtothegrowinginterdisciplinaryhumanrightscommunityatSJSU.
2013 In Highlights: On October 17, 2013 we hosted a packed house (100+) for our second Annual Human Rights Lecture, part of the Ann Lucas Lecture Series. Our event on the formerly named “School of the Americas” at Fort Benning, GA featured Dr. Claudia Chaufan of USCF, Co-Founder of School of the Americas Watch, Judy Liteky, and Director Jim McGarry of the Sister Dorothy Stang Center, Notre Dame de Namur University.

• Students in the capstone (JS 179) course began several Human Rights Action Projects in 2013 that continue today, including:
DACAmented: Students work with the San Jose Peace and Justice Center, TIGRA, and CommUniverCity SJ to provide free legal services to those who qualify for working papers under federal DACA legislation.
FLY Male Mentors: Students work with Fresh Lifelines for Youth [FLY] on a campaign to recruit much needed male mentors for youth in the dependency and delinquency systems.
Sexual Assault Resistance (SJSU): Students work with university partners to create consistent information and resources to prevent sexual assault on campus and provide support and services to sexual assault victims.

•Dr.ScottMyers-Liptoncelebratesasuccessfulcampaigntoraisetheminimumwageto$10.00/hr.inSanJosewithstudentandcommunitypartnerssuchasCaféJ.LookoutforDr.Myers-Lipton’snewbookavailableinOctober2014,Endingextremepoverty:Aneconomicbillofrightstoeliminatepoverty(ParadigmPublishers:www.paradigmpublishers.com).
•In2013theRecordClearanceProject,undertheleadershipofMargaret“Peggy”Stevensonfiled169petitionsincourtfor55clients,ofwhich167convictiondismissalsweregranted;wasgranted21outof22filedpetitionstoreduceeligiblefeloniestomisdemeanors;andgave39communitypresentationstoover1600peopleonexpungementlawandprocedure.RCPmembersalsoworkedwithStanfordUniversitytoimproveoneffortstoimplementCAexpungementpolicies.

•Dr.PersisKarim,Professor,English&ComparativeLiterature,receivedaPeace-BuildingGrantfromtheUnitedStatesInstituteofPeacetohostaworkshopforhighschoolandcommunitycollegeinstructors:“TeachingPeace/TeachingNonviolence:ApproachestoTeachingtheIsraeli-PalestinianConflict.”TheSJSUworkshopinvolvedotherfacultyincludingDr.DianaStover(Journalism)andDr.KathrynDavis(Geography/GlobalStudies).TheworkshophelpedteachersexplorehowtopresenttheconflicttohighschoolstudentsandofferpedagogicalapproachestounderstandingthenarrativesofbothPalestiniansandIsraelisaswellastounderscorethehumanrightsimpactofoccupation.
•Dr.ErickaAdamscontinuesher(interviewstudy)researchon“theimpactofcriminalrecordclearanceonex-offendersandtheirfamilies”withco-authorElsaChenofSantaClaraUniversity.
