PRICINGSt John Ambulance is a self-funded,registered charity. Course fees providerevenue to support our volunteer com-munity services. You receive top qualitypublic training at a reasonable price

which ensures our mandates of com-munity service and First Aid training foras many people as possible. Courseprices include materials, registration andinstructional fees. Prices are subject tochange without notice.

METHOD OF PAYMENTFees must be paid in advance usingcash, Visa, Mastercard or Debit. Advancecredit approval must be obtained forcorporate invoicing.

CERTIFICATIONMost First Aid course certificates arevalid for three years. Annual CPR / AEDtraining is recommended.

CERTIFICATE PORTABILITY Each province and federal departmenthas its own First Aid legislation andspecific requirements for OccupationalHealth and Safety compliance. Wherecertificate portability is required fromone jurisdiction to another, please con-

sult your local St John Centre for furtherinformation.

CERTIFICATE REPLACEMENTSt John Ambulance certificates are num-bered and electronically recorded in acentralized national database. Replace-ment certificates can be obtained in per-son at any St John Ambulance locations.Please bring photo identification whenyou pick up your replacement certificate.The fee is $10.

CPR STANDARDS All cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)modules and courses are taught to StJohn Ambulance national standards,which are in accordance with the Inter-national Liaison Committee on Resusci-tation (ILCOR) recommendations.

CLASS CANCELLATIONSSt John Ambulance reserves the rightto cancel classes that do not reach the

minimum enrollment requirements or forextenuating circumstances. Every effortwill be made to notify all registrants ina timely manner prior to the class startdate. Fees for cancelled classes will berefunded in full or applied to anothercourse upon request.

STUDENT WITHDRAWALSStudents may formally withdraw froma class by contacting a St John Ambu-lance Centre prior to the class start dateby telephone, fax, or email. Studentsand companies are held responsiblefor courses in which they are registereduntil they formally withdraw from thecourse(s) within the refund deadlinedates. Please note: Non-attendancedoes not constitute a formal withdrawal.

REFUNDSStudents are eligible for a 100% refundless an administrative charge of $25if they formally withdraw at least twobusiness days prior to the class startdate with the exception of Medical FirstResponder, Advanced First Aid, EMRand Instructor Development courses, forwhich no refunds will be provided forstudent withdrawals with less than three(3) weeks notice of class start date.

Individuals who withdraw from the Medi-cal First Responder, Advanced First Aidor the Instructor Development Programprior to the three week close date areeligible for a full refund less the $25administration fee. Individuals who

withdraw from the EMR course prior tothe three week close date will receivea full refund less the administration fee

and the cost of the course books whichcannot be returned once purchased.The withdrawal refund may be applied toanother course upon request.

Students may transfer to another courseright up to the beginning of the originalcourse. Once the original course beginsand no transfer request has been made,it is considered a “no show”with theexception of AFA and EMR (same asrefund).

For private group course registrations,companies and groups are eligible for

a 100% refund less the administrativecharge of $150 if they formally withdrawat least two business days prior to theclass start date with the exception ofthe Medical First Responder, AdvancedFirst Aid, EMR and Instructor Develop-ment courses, for which no refunds willbe provided for student withdrawals withless than three weeks notice of class startdate. For the EMR program the cost ofthe books will be added to the $150administration fee for withdrawals. Therefund may be applied to another courseupon request.

Refunds will not be provided to studentswho do not withdraw within the dead-lines mentioned above.

Please also note that students who attendbut are unsuccessful in courses are noteligible for refunds.

BECOME A VOLUNTEERFIRST AID RESPONDER

STUDENT INFORMATIONTo ensure a safe and comfortable learning environment foreveryone while taking a course, please note:

1. Verbal or physical abuse, profanity or harassment from astudent will not be tolerated and will result in immediateremoval from class and no refund will be given. Companieswho have sent and paid for employees to attend class willbe notified.

2. If there is need for First Aid to be administered duringclass, the class instructor will be the designated First Aider.First Aid kits are located at the front reception desk and inthe hallways.

3. We cannot train an individual while they are under theinfluence of alcohol or drugs. If a student is under theinfluence, they will be removed from class and no refundwill be given. Companies who have sent and paid for that employee to attend class will be notified.

4. If there is a fire in the building, students are asked to

please follow the evacuation plan posted in each classroomand note the muster point. Fire extinguishers are locatedthroughout the building and at the front reception desk.Please note these locations.

5. Students are asked to turn off cells phones or have them onvibrate mode once class commences. If a student must takea call, we ask they leave the room.

6. St. John Ambulance is not responsible for parking ticketsreceived while attending classes. Please park in the desig-nated spaces and observe all signage. If the parking lot isfull, please park off site and observe all signage.

7. The written and practical exercises are both mandatory forcertification. The instructor is responsible for evaluating thepractical skills performed by the students. Certificates willnot be issued to students who choose to not complete therequired exam and / or practical exercises.

8. There is no smoking inside St John Ambulance buildings.Smoking will only be permitted in designated smokingareas outside of our building.

9. We encourage students to wear comfortable clothing, bephysically capable of completing practical exercises, and be

respectful of others which includes refraining from wearingscented products and, if experiencing obvious signs of acommunicable illness, please transfer to a class a few dayslater.

Standard First Aid - CPR Recertification (challenge)

This 1-day recertification is a challenge of the Standard First Aid

course content and requires the student to demonstrate essentialskills as well as pass the theoretical exam. This challenge is open

to those who have a current Standard First Aid certificate from anAlberta OH&S approved program -- with Level A or C CPR and with

or without AED. If the certificate is from out-of-province then a fullcourse must be taken.

Enhanced Standard First Aid

This comprehensive 3-day course is for those requiring more in-depthfirst aid training, is a pre-requisite for the SJA Instructor Development

Program, and is the required pre-requisite for the EMR Program. Thecourse covers all the components in the Standard First Aid course plus

an Alberta Approved First Aid Training Agency will be recognized inBritish Columbia. Alberta workers moving to BC or temporarily work-

ing in BC and requiring a BC certificate must apply in person to anApproved Training Agency in BC or an Alberta St. John Ambulance

Centre for an “out-of-jurisdiction” certificate by producing their validAlberta certificate and photo ID. An orientation package to WorkSafe

BC requirements will be provided to applicants at the time of applica-tion. Min. age: 16

Workers moving from BC to Alberta must have a valid BC certificate

and once in Alberta, receive an orientation from their employer onAlberta First Aid requirements. Alberta Work Safe bulletins which in-clude the information required may be downloaded from the Alberta

Government web site: www.worksafely.org No additional certificate isrequired. The BC certificate is recognized until the expiry date. Once

First Aid in Child Care

This two-day course is designed for professional child care workers,but great for parents and all caregivers. This course includes emer-

gency life saving skills and first aid topics with a focus on children.The course includes Level C CPR (adult, infant, child and 2-rescuer

First Aid in Child Care Recertification (challenge)

$125 • ONE DAY 

This recertification is for those who hold a current certificate in FirstAid in Child Care. This challenge includes a review of essential skills,

 Wilderness First Aid Level I, II, or III

$85, $150, $225 • 1,2 or 3 DAYS

This course trains participants to provide care to the sick and injuredin remote settings and is appropriate for those working in, or travel-

ing to, remote areas where immediate emergency medical servicesare difficult to obtain. There are three levels of Wilderness First Aid

skills training that range from basic to advanced levels. The focus ofthe course is to adapt First Aid skills as needed, based on availability

of supplies, the environment, and additional factors encountered ina remote setting. This course is intended to compliment wilderness

survival training and does not replace it.

CPR Level A - AED

In this course, students will learn to activate Emergency Medical Ser-

vices, provide assistance to an adult whose heart has stopped or whois choking, and learn to recognize signs and symptoms of stroke. This

CPR Level C - AED

In this course, students will learn to activate Emergency Medical Ser-vices, provide assistance to an adult, child, or infant whose heart has

CPR Level C - AED Recertification (challenge)

This is for current CPR certificate holders who wish to renew their CPRand AED certification. It tests skills and it is expected that students will

have reviewed the course materials prior to the class.

 Advanced First Aid Recertification

Approximately 100 hours of pre-course study is required prior to theclass start date and is in addition to the scheduled class time. Mini-

mum age: 18 years.

Pre-requisite: Enhanced Standard First Aid or equivalent current within6 months. Accepted equivalency is a two day SFA–Level C CPR withAED and AR from a nationally recognized training agency (Red Cross,

Ski Patrol, Lifesaving, Heart & Stroke, or other SJA Councils).

Certification Length: N/A. Course completion training card only. Stu-

dents are required to register with the Alberta College of Paramedicsand successfully complete the Provincial EMR exam for certification.

Emergency Medical Responder Refresher

$600 • 35 HOURS

This 27-hour course is designed for individuals who require a refresher

of their EMR training to register with the Alberta College of Paramed-ics. Essential skills are reviewed and tested along with any changes in

protocols or scope of practice. Min. age: 18 years. NOTE this courseis only available in Edmonton and Calgary.

Pre-requisite: Evidence of current EMR Training from a recognizedAlberta College of Paramedics (ACP) accredited training agency for

EMR refresher.

Instructor Development Program

$600 • 40 HOURS

The IDP Program prepares participants to become nationally qualified

St. John Ambulance First Aid and CPR Instructors. This 40-hour courseis comprised of three modules: 1) Instructor Development - includes

the application of adult learning principles, presentation skills, trainingstrategies, coaching skills, evaluation techniques, and demonstra-

tion skills; 2) Administration, Policies & Procedures; and 3) CurriculumOrientation. Min. age: 18 years

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates are required toteam-teach and be monitored for certification as a St. John Ambu-

lance Instructor and to qualify for instructor licensing by Alberta Coun-cil. The certificate is valid for three years.

Pre-requisites: St. John Ambulance’s Enhanced Standard First Aid cer-tificate, completed within 6 months of course start date. Candidates

are also required to provide evidence of a clear criminal record datedwithin 6 months of application date, prior to registration.

Health Care Provider (HCP) CPR

$100 • ONE DAY

HCP CPR is for individuals who are working or plan to be working in

the Health Care field and require the Health Care Provider level ofCPR. The course includes all CPR skills plus advanced skills such as

artificial respiration and use of bag valve masks and AEDs.

Health Care Provider (HCP) CPR Recertification (Challenge)

This course is for individuals who have a current HCP Level CPR cer-

We Can Help Too is a modular interactive program intended for youth

1. What is the difference between Emergency First Aid withLevel A CPR and Standard First Aid with Level C CPR? 

Emergency First Aid with Level A CPR is the basic First Aidcourse (1 day). It covers scene survey, severe bleeding, burns,eye injuries, medical conditions, CPR for adults and AutomatedExternal Defibrillation (AED).

Standard First Aid with Level C CPR (2 days) goes over everythingthe Emergency class does as well as secondary survey, bone &

 joint injuries, chest wounds, wound care, hot & cold injuries (heatstroke, hypothermia, etc) and CPR for adults, children, and infants,as well as two rescuer CPR and AED.

2. How do I get a replacement certificate?  You can drop in to any St John Ambulance location across Albertawith photo ID. There is a $10.00 fee.

3. I’d like to recertify my First Aid but it expired last week.Can I still register? 

If your certificate has expired, you would have to enroll in a fullcourse.

4. I’d like to recertify my First Aid but I got it through RedCross last time. Can I still register? 

As long as your certificate is still valid, you can register into a StJohn Ambulance recertification course providing that the original

course was taken through an approved vendor. You will berequired to show a copy of your current certificate as verificationof current training.

5. I have an Alberta First Aid certificate but want to work inBC. How can I do this? 

Once you have completed your First Aid training, come to thefront desk to apply for the BC Out of Jurisdiction certificate for$25. This ticket, along with your current First Aid certificateenables you to work in Alberta and BC. NOTE this only applies toEmergency, Standard and Enhanced level First Aid courses.

6. Can I pay by cheque for my First Aid course? 

St. John Ambulance only accepts company cheques. Personal

registrations may be paid by credit, debit or cash.

7. My school requires me to have Heart & Stroke HCP CPR.Will SJA HCP be accepted? 

Some businesses/schools require certificates from specific FirstAid providers. Please check with your employer or school beforeenrolling.

8. Why can’t I register for the EMR course over the phone? 

Students wishing to register must enroll in person so that theymay receive books required for pre-study. There is also paperworkto be filled out for cancellation/transfer policies. Registrationsmust be complete by the closing date (three weeks prior to classstart date) to ensure enough time for 100 hours of pre-study.

9. I need to register some employees from my company. Howdo I register them? 

 You will be required to fill out a Company Registration Formwhich can be found online at http://www.sja.ca/Pages/Alberta-Company-Registration-Forms.aspx You can fax or email scanned

record check. Once admitted to the program, you take a 40-hourInstructor Development Program (1 week) followed by a coupleof Team Teaches and a Monitoring to become certified to teachSt. John First Aid courses. (Team Teaches are where you shareteaching a class with an already-certified instructor; a Monitoring iswhere you are observed teaching an entire class on your own)

Medical First Responder (MFR)

$500 • 40 HOURS

This 40 hour course exceeds Standard FirstAid content and covers topics including,

HCP CPR, AED, oxygen administration,trauma and medical emergencies, spinal

motion restriction, and basic anatomy andphysiology. This course is ideal for Volun-

teer Fire Departments and those needingadditional First Aid knowledge and skills.

Approximately 12 hours of pre-course workis required in advance of the course start

date and is in addition to the scheduled

class time. Note: This course is not equiva-lent to Advanced First Aid (OHS approved

80 hour course) or the EMR Program (120hour course that meets EMR registration

requirements for the Alberta College of

Emergency Medical ResponderRefresher

$600 • 35 HOURS

This 35-hour course is designed for individuals who re-

quire a refresher of their EMR training to register with theAlberta College of Paramedics (ACP). Essential skills are

reviewed and tested along with any changes in protocolsor scope of practice. Min. age: 18 years. NOTE this

course is only available in Edmonton and Calgary.

Pre-requisite: Evidence of current EMR Training from a

recognized Alberta College of Paramedics accreditedtraining agency for EMR refresher. Certification Length:

N/A. Course completion training card only. Please con-

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)

Instructor Development Program (IDP)

$600 • 40 hours (1week)

The IDP program prepares participants to become na-tionally qualified St. John Ambulance First Aid and CPR

Instructors. It consists of two components: core course andpost course.

This 40-hour course focuses on instructor developmentincluding: the application of adult learning principles,

presentation skills, training strategies, coaching skills,evaluation techniques, and demonstration skills.

Upon completion of the core course, the candidate mustteam-teach with a certified instructor and then be moni-

tored for national certification. The certificate is valid forthree years.

Pre-requisites: St. John Ambulance’s Enhanced StandardFirst Aid certificate, completed within 6 months of course

start date. Candidates are also required to provide evi-dence of a clear criminal record dated within 6 months of

application date, prior to registration. Min. age: 18 years

KEEP UP YOUR FIRST AID SKILLSThe St. John Ambulance First Aid Responders provide a range of patient

care coverage at events in communities throughout Alberta. You’veprobably seen the volunteers at football and hockey games, rodeos, fairs,

exhibitions and other events.

As a volunteer you gain valuable First Aid experience, patient careexperience, the opportunity to improve your First Aid knowledge, gain

leadership, and communication and interpersonal skills. And you make

new friends! Call your local centre for details.

You and your dog can bring joy to residents

in a variety of settings including hospitals

and nursing homes with your scheduled visits.

Therapy Dog Program

The proper use of a child safety seat has

been shown to reduce the likelihood ofa child being injured or killed in a crash

by as much as 75% according to the

Alberta Health Services website.

At selected SJA Centres, this FREE 2-3

hour information session is intendedto provide parents and caregiversinformation on how to correctly install

a child safety seat and to transportchildren safely in a vehicle. It also

provides an overview of the law inAlberta regarding occupant restraints

and is taught by trained volunteersthrough the Community Services

department of St John.

Funds from St John First Aid Training are put back into your

community through a variety of volunteer programs ranging

from volunteers who provide First Aid at community events,

to Instructors teaching parents of newborns how to perform

CPR on their babies in intensive care units at a hospital, as
