In August 1966 we ce lebra ted the sixt ieth birthday of Dr. Tech. Sci. Pante le imon Petrovich Kremlevski i , as wel l as his 37 years of engineering and scientif ic act ivi ty.
On complet ing his studies at the Leningrad Technologica l Institute, P. P. Kremlevski i worked for several years in the Org~nergo 6All-Union Trust for Improving the Efficiency of Power Systems and Fuel Supplies) and the Orgkhim (State Trust for Promoting Efficiency in the Chemica l Industry) on ra t ional iz ing the power and fuel u t i l iza t ion in many industrial enterprises. In this period he wrote a handbook on "Thermal Control Instruments of Soviet Produc- t ion," whose first two volumes were published in 1988 and 1989.
Between 1940 and 1948 P. P. Kremlevskii worked in the hydrolysis industry, at first in planning and then in sci- entif ic research at the VNIIGS (All-Union Scientif ic Research Institute of the Hydrolysis and Sulfide Alcohol Industry) where he was in charge of the automation laboratory from the moment it was set up. Under his leadership this l abo- ratory developed many original measuring and control instruments which are being widely used not only in various branches of our industry, but also abroad in other socialist countries (Peoples' Democrat ic Republics). In 1947 P. P. Kremlevskii wrote a two-volume monograph on "Control and Measuring Instruments in the Hydrolysis Industry."
In 1958, P. P. Kremlevskii was put in charge of the gas-measuring laboratory of the D. I. Mendeleev Al l -Union
Scientif ic Research Institute of Metrology. Here he developed in col labora t ion with other laboratory workers a new pr inciple for designing reference gas-measuring equipment based on an automat ic operation of two paired be l l - shaped meter ing vessels. Two unique instal lat ions for measuring gas flows up to 150 and 1500 m3/h were produced as soon as the required automat ic equipment was made. At the present t ime the laboratory is engaged in producing portable
gas-measuring instruments and reference installat ions for testing gas meters in units of mass.
In 1964 P. P. Kremlevskii successfully defended his doctor 's dissertation on "Problems in Measuring Stationary and Variable Flows of Liquids, Gases and Vapors".
P. P. Kremlevskii published over 60 scientif ic works. Among them one should mention a series on the measare- ment of a pulsating flow, which have led to the establishment of a new cr i ter ion regarding the damping of pulsations in gas filters, on the dynamic characterist ics of different ia l manometers and, especia l ly , the monograph on "Flow- meters" whose first edit ion appeared in 1955 and the second in 1963. This monograph is the most profound and c o m - prehensive not only in our country, but also in foreign l i terature. It has been t ranslated into several foreign languages.
P. P. Kremlevskii has dedica ted much energy and effort to social work as well. He is one of the organizers of the Leningrad branch of the Scientif ic and Techn ica l Society of the Instrument-Making Industry." He has been con-
tinuously in charge of its section of thermal control and automation instruments, which has been successfully operat- ing for the last 20 years. The works of this section were sys temat ica l ly published on his in i t ia t ive and under his sc i - entif ic editorship. Six editions of these works have been published to date. Two a l l -un ion scientif ic and t echn ica l
conferences on "Methods and Instruments for Measuring Flows and Quantit ies of Liquids, Gases and Vapors," which were held under the guidance of P. P. Kremlevskii , have helped substantial ly in the development of this branch of our ins t rument-making industry. In 1963 P. P. Kremlevski i was awarded by the III Conference of the Scientif ic and
Techn ica l Society of the Instrument-Making Industry the t i t le of "Honorary Member of the Society. ~
P. P. Kremlevskii is also par t ic ipat ing ac t ive ly in normal iza t ion and standardizat ion, in providing a rat ional terminology and classif icat ion in the f ield of measurement technology. In the last five years he has made over 100 comments on draft standards and other normalizing documents.
P. P. Kremlevskii pays considerable at tention to the training of personnel. He has given a series of lectures in various educat ional institutions. At present he leads a large group of graduate students.
We wish P. P. Kremlevskii on the occasion of his birthday a long l ife and further success in his c rea t ive work
which helps our ins t rument-making industry to flourish.
