Javon DeGodwinClass of 2020, Student Speaker

Javon DeGodwin was born on October 28th, 2001 in Hollywood, California, to Jeff and Latasha DeGodwin. He has an older brother, Marcus DeGodwin. Born to a family of talent, Javon has always been engulfed in the riches of the arts such as music and dance. He completed Barstow Junior High School and Barstow High School in Barstow, California with honors and

was awarded the Citizenship Award for his entire senior class of 2019.

Javon was active in his junior high and high school marching band and concert band. He joined the top jazz band at Barstow High School his senior year earning the Louis Armstrong Award for excellence and improvement on his skill. He was also the section leader in his drumline that won several trophies for his school and was a leading role model amongst his peers. Given the opportunity in high school, Javon enrolled in the Transitional College program which allowed certain students to take college classes while in high school. With that privilege, Javon was able to graduate Barstow Community College in one full school year at the age of 18. In his one year at BCC, Javon was a member of the Associated Student Government, a STEP mentor, participated in the Inter-Club Council, was a member of AGS and earned grades to graduate with Summa Cum Laude Honors.

Javon will continue his education to obtain his bachelor’s degree in music performance. Ultimately, he hopes to achieve his lifelong dream of playing music for the rest of his life. Given his options, Javon DeGodwin will commit to California State University Northridge or University of California, Los Angeles.

ALMA MATER

Hail to our alma mater dear,To you we sing this hymn.

Happy of heart and strong of limb,We serve always heeding your call.

Though we may leave your fair grand halls,We’ll always sing of you,

Forever wave the blue and gold,We pledge our hearts to you.

Bles’d with the desert’s golden sun,Under a sky of blue,

We hold your honor dear to heart,Our love never failing, but true.

When we are gone from thy grand halls,There’s still the blue and gold,We’ll never falter in our pride,

We pledge our love to you.

In the 12th Century, as scholars began to organize themselves into guilds called “universities,” a distinctive costume called the “scholar’s gown” also began to emerge. The gown was originally black to better hide ink stains and voluminous for warmth. It also had a hood that could be pulled over the head for protection from rain and served in fair weather as a carrying pouch for such scholarly essentials as chalk, spare pens, or boar’s tooth for smoothing the surface of parchment, a creamy or yellowish material made from dried and treated sheepskin, goatskin, or other animal hide, used in former times for books and documents. The square mortarboard worn today is a stylized representation of a stocking cap especially designed to hold a small book secure atop a scholar’s head.

Scholarly rank and discipline are indicated by the cut of the gown and color of the hood and tassel:

• The associate’s and bachelor’s gown is black and untrimmed, has pointed sleeves, and reaches only to the knees.

• The master’s gown is black and untrimmed but has closed sleeves in the shape of an arc.

• The doctoral gown is black with black velvet panels and having three velvet bars on bell shaped sleeves.

• The color of the silk or velvet band on the border of the hood indicates the discipline:

• light blue for education,• white for liberal arts,• golden yellow for science,• brown for fine arts,• crimson for journalism,• lemon for library science,• pink for music,• apricot for nursing,• silver gray for speech,• dark blue for philosophy,• sage green for physical education, • peacock blue for public administration,• drab for business,• and copper for economics.

• The lining of the hood signifies the school colors of the degree granting institution.
