Ascension Thursday Schedule

The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, a

holy day of obligation, will be celebrated this week on

Thursday May 10. Ascension Thursday parish Masses

will be celebrated at:

9:00 am (English)

12:15 pm (English)

7:00 pm (Spanish)

The St. John-Visitation Parish Pastoral Center and

offices will be closed on Thursday May 10th

in observance of the holy day.

Did You Know?

The liturgical celebration of the Jesus’

ascension to heaven 40 days after His resurrection on

Easter Sunday is based upon Acts 1:3-12. The number

40 is mentioned several times in the Bible.

Among them are the number of days that Jesus

spent in prayer and fasting prior to the temptation in

the desert (Matthew 4:1-3); the days and nights of the

Great Flood in which Noah and his family were spared

in the ark (Genesis 7:12); Moses praying and fasting on

Mount Sinai before receiving the Ten Commandments

(Exodus 34:27-28); when fleeing Queen Jezebel,

Elijah the prophet walked forty days and nights to

Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:8) the number of days that

the Joshua and the other spies sent by Moses

reconnoitered the Promised Land (Numbers 13:25); the

number of years that Saul, David, and Solomon

reigned as kings, and the number of days prophesied

by Jonah for the city of Nineveh to repent or be

destroyed. Many biblical scholars consider the number

40 symbolic of a time for preparation, testing, or trial.

Mother's Day Masses

The parish Masses next Sunday May 13th

(Mother's Day) will be offered for all mothers, both

living and deceased. Please make use of the specially

marked envelopes that your received in your monthly

mailing packet or those that are available in the church

and return them to the parish office by Friday May

11th.

Supporting Calvary Hospital

The St. Joseph’s Council of The Knights of

Columbus will be selling raffle tickets after this

weekend’s parish Masses to support Calvary

Hospital, the cancer hospital in the Bronx for

terminally ill patients. Your support of this charitable

endeavor will be greatly appreciated.

Please accept our thanks for the Holy Thursday

charity collection gift of $750. The reason we are able

to help so many men in the battle against addiction is

because people like you who believe in our mission.

So many of the men who come to St.

Christopher’s Inn come with only the clothes they are

wearing. They have no home, no money, absolutely no

resources whatsoever. Knowing there are people who

care about them and their needs motivates these

individuals to face their addictions and to commit to

finding a way of controlling their destructive

behaviors. Thank you so very much for your help.

Holy Land Pilgrimage Meeting

Are you considering going to the Holy Land

and would like further information before deciding?

Have you already registered and want additional details

about what is being planned for this Fall’s parish

pilgrimage?

If so, plan on coming to a meeting with Mr.

Tony Tannousis from TriStar Tours on Saturday May

12th at 2:00 pm at the St. John-Visitation Parish

Pastoral Center.

The dates for this pilgrimage are October 29-

November 8, 2018. Cost is $2898 per person based on

double occupancy with round trip flights from Newark

to Tel-Aviv, 8-night hotel accommodations, daily

breakfast and dinner, and sightseeing of various

biblical sites. Brochures with details are available in

the church and at the parish office. 40 have already

registered. The deadline for the $50 Early Bird

discount has been extended to May 12th.

Religious Education Program

Pilgrimage to Mother Cabrini Shrine

Once again, this Spring our Parish Religious

Education Program will be having a year-end outing

and pilgrimage. On Saturday morning May 19th, our

students will be visiting the Saint Frances Xavier

Cabrini Shrine in Washington Heights.

For those who are interested in joining our

students and teacher on this pilgrimage by bus, please

contact our parish business manager, Mr. George

Chiffriller (718)548-1221 x121. Cost is $10.00 and

reservations must be received by Monday May 7th.

The Mother Cabrini Shrine is located at 701

Fort Washington Avenue, New York, NY. For those

who would like to travel by public transportation, take

the A train to 190th Street and exit the station by

elevator; the Shrine is across the street. We plan on

arriving at 10:00 am for Mass followed by a tour of the

shrine. Consider joining us for this parish religious

education program pilgrimage.

Devotional Store

The former baptistry at the entrance of the

church is now a devotional religious goods store

offering bibles, prayer cards, rosaries, crucifixes, and

other assorted devotional items. Our parish devotional

religious goods store is open following the Sunday

parish Masses. At other times, these items may be

obtained at the Parish Pastoral Center. This service is

being offered in response to repeated requests for

devotional religious items. If you have no already

done so, stop by after Mass to see what assortment of

items are available.

Ongoing Food Collection Drive

Your ongoing and continuing support of

donations of non-perishable food items and canned

goods to assist local area food pantries is greatly

appreciated. Unfortunately, for many people who are

in need, hunger does not take a holiday in their lives.

The food collection boxes will remain in the church to

accept and collect donations. “For I was hungry, and

you gave me food” (Matthew 25:35)

50th Anniversary Jubilee Mass

Couples celebrating their 50th Wedding

Anniversary anytime during 2018 are invited to attend

the Annual Golden Wedding Jubilee Mass with Cardinal

Dolan at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, June 3rd at

2:15 pm. Pre-registration is required; please contact the

parish office (718)548-1221. The closing date to register

for the Mass is May 14th.

La celebración litúrgica de la ascensión de Jesús al

cielo 40 días después de su resurrección el domingo de Pascua

se basa en Hechos 1: 3-12. El número 40 se menciona varias

veces en la Biblia.

Entre ellos está la cantidad de días que Jesús pasó en

oración y ayuno antes de la tentación en el desierto (Mateo 4:

1-3); los días y las noches del Gran Diluvio en los que Noé y

su familia se salvaron en el arca (Génesis 7:12); Moisés

orando y ayunando en el Monte Sinaí antes de recibir los Diez

Mandamientos (Éxodo 34: 27-28); al huir de la reina Jezabel,

el profeta Elías caminó durante cuarenta días y noches hacia

el Monte Horeb (1 Reyes 19: 8) la cantidad de días que Josué

y los otros espías enviados por Moisés reconocieron la Tierra

artículos devocionales variados. Nuestra tienda de artículos

religiosos devocionales de la parroquia está abierta después

de las Misas de la parroquia los domingos. En otras

ocasiones, estos artículos pueden obtenerse en el Centro

Pastoral Parroquial. Este servicio se ofrece en respuesta a

solicitudes repetidas de artículos religiosos devocionales. Si

aún no lo ha hecho, visítenos después de la misa para ver

qué variedad de artículos hay disponibles.

50 ° Aniversario Misa Jubilar

Las parejas que celebran su 50 ° aniversario de

bodas en cualquier momento durante 2018 están invitadas a

asistir a la misa anual del Jubileo de bodas de oro con el

cardenal Dolan en la Catedral de San Patricio el domingo 3

de junio a las 2:15 p. M. Se requiere preinscripción; por
