CatherineMcAuleyFoundress of theSisters of MercySeptember 29, 1778 ~

November 11, 1841

Catherine McAuley was born into a well-to-do family,

but by age 20, she had lost both parents, and the family wasreduced to living on the charity of relatives and friends. In 1803 Catherine welcomed an invitation from achildless Quaker couple, Catherine and William Callaghanof Coolock, to live with them as companion and helper toMrs. Callaghan. In the Callaghan household there was anatmosphere of tolerance and love of neighbor that found itsexpression in care for the poor, in service and in education. Catherine was free to practice her religion while theCallaghans practiced theirs. The Callaghans eventuallychose to join the Catholic Church, and became Catholics. On the deaths of the Callaghans, Catherine McAuleybecame the heiress to the Callaghan fortune (worth $1million by today’s standards) which she used “to build ahouse on Baggot St. where the children of the poor would beeducated.” She was convinced that education was the onlyanswer to the enslavement that was rampant among the

poor. The archbishop of Dublin, Daniel Murray, shared thisconviction, and was supportive of Catherine and her work Other like-minded women joined Catherine McAuley inher work of educating the poor and took up residence in thehouse on Baggot St. which was opened in September 24,1827 and called The House of Mercy. Despite the full approval of Archbishop Murray, manyclergy and others could not understand nor accept a group ofwomen working independently of Church structures, andthey threatened to close down the House of Mercy. Catherine and the House of Mercy suffered the publicmisunderstanding, criticism, suspicion and even jealousythat sometimes afflict new ventures in the mission of theChurch. Catherine was called an upstart. Her work amongthe poor was judged unfit for proper women to perform, andworse, a meddling of the “unlearned sex” in the work of theclergy. She was also accused of indirectly deflectingsupport from the work of established religious orders and ofimitating them without abiding by their rules. Catherine never intended to found a religious order ofwomen wearing a religious habit, but when ArchbishopMurray urged her to form a religious institute, she agreedbecause she was a pragmatic woman of faith, and ifbecoming a Religious and wearing a religious habit waswhat it took to continue her work, then that was what shewould do. Catherine and two other women entered theformation program of the Presentation Sisters to formallyprepare for life as women Religious. At the end of theirformation, they professed vows and returned to the House ofMercy on December 12, 1831, which became the foundationday of the Sisters of Mercy. The Order was given formalpapal approval in 1835. In her application for approval ofher new order, Mother Catherine said, “...the principalpurpose of this Congregation is to educate poor little girls,to lodge and maintain poor young ladies.... and to visit thesick poor.” At the time of Catherine’s death there were 150 Sistersof Mercy. Shortly thereafter, small groups of Sisters leftIreland to establish foundations in Newfoundland, Australia,New Zealand, Argentina and theUnited States. During theAmerican Civil War, numerousSisters of Mercy served as nurseson battlefields and in hospitals. Today, there are some 10,000members of the Sisters of Mercy. In 1978, the cause for thebeatification of CatherineMcAuley was opened by PopePaul VI. Pope John Paul IIdeclared her Venerable in April of 1990.

Additional special recognition will be established for higher levels of contributions. The Memorial is on-going until the debt is retiredfor Corpus Christi’s completed Master Plan. Contributors may move from one level to the next level of recognition with subsequentand cumulative contributions. The header plate of the Memorial provides a general acknowledgment of all contributors to theBuilding Fund and all who prayerfully support the building up of the Body of Christ here at Corpus Christi.
