Tour of Basilica Windows - Revisited Sunday, February 18, 2:00 - 3:00pm Dr. Frank DeStefano will conduct another informal tour of the beautiful stained-glass windows of St. Joseph's Basilica and will discuss the meaning and artistic significance of each window. He believes that the windows are an artistic treasure and one of the reasons that the Church is on the National Register of Historic Places. All are welcome!

Ash Wednesday, February 14 Schedule of Masses with Distribution of Ash: 6:30am, 8:00am, 12noon, 5:00pm and 7:00pm Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, which is a “powerful season, a turning point that can foster change and conversion in each of us. We are need to improve , to change for the better. Lent helps us and thus we leave behind old habits and the lazy addiction to the evil that deceives and ensnares us. During the season of Lent, the Church issues two important invitations: to have a greater awareness of the redemptive work of Christ; and to live out one’s Baptism with deeper commitment.” (Pope Francis, General Audience, March 5, 2014)

The following are the rules on fasting and abstinence observed during Lent: Fasting: There are two days of obligatory fasting during Lent: Ash Wednesday (February 14) and Good Friday (March 30). Catholics from age 18 until age 59 may have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids and required medication are allowed at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals. Abstinence: Catholics from ages 14 onwards are to abstain from meat (from animals that live on land including birds of the air; fish and shellfish may be eaten) on Ash Wednesday and every Friday in Lent.

St. Joseph Family Day March 18 Our St. Joseph Family Day is coming up! 11:30am Mass with Bishop Barber followed by an international potluck. Pull out your native costumes and your favorite recipes from home, and get ready to help us celebrate the feast of our patron saint.

Forgiven! Congratulations to the 54 youngsters of our parish who celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time last Monday. There was a lovely Reconciliation Service, concluding with each child lighting a candle symbolizing Christ driving the darkness from our lives, and enjoyed a cookie provided by Chiu and De Leon families, showing God’s mercy is indeed sweet!

A Message From The Pastor Lunar New Year falls on February 16. All are invited to celebrate the Lunar New Year at a reception hosted by the Vietnamese Ministry on Saturday, February 17, after the 8:00am Mass in the Parish Office.

Save The Date! Lenten Mission with Fr. Tom Bonaci Clear your calendar so you can treat yourself to this special time of preparation this Lent.

The Overlap of Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day is a Special Providence of God

Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, coincides with Valentine's Day this year. The last time Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day overlapped was in 1945 when the Detroit Tigers won the World Series. The two days will overlap again in 2024 and 2029 and in 2096, Ash Wednesday will occur on Leap Day – February 29 for the first time in the Church’s history.

For those who wonder if Catholic bishops might grant a dispensation from the day’s fasting requirements, as they sometimes have with the no meat rule when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday in Lent, they should probably think again. A dispensation has not been given by the bishops out of respect for the importance of Ash Wednesday in the lives of so many – including our non-Catholic Christians. Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful reflection and penance.

Fr Leo Patalinghug, who has a cooking show on the Eternal Word Television Network called “Savoring our Faith”, talks about couples keeping their relationships strong by celebrating with good meals once a month. He sees no conflict in the Ash Wednesday, Valentine’s Day overlap. Instead, he views it as a great teaching moment.

Fr. Leo says that the overlap was a “special providence of God” because it can offer a deeper sense of what love really means – which at times requires sacrifice. As he sees it, the bigger lesson is to think about “going without and where that will lead you. So often people treat love like fast food when love – and all things of God – take time,” he added.

He said this Valentine’s Day couples have the “perfect day to start Lent and to have that discussion of what love means.” And, they can also have a modest meal that is delicious. Overall, it’s “absolutely a win-win,” Fr. Leo noted because couples can have a “Lent appropriate menu” essentially infused with the day’s reminder “to know humbly we are from dust.”

“We are called to love our neighbor. But, like the scholar in the scripture passage, we may find ourselves wondering, “Who is my neighbor?” This Lent, CRS Rice Bowl—Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten faith-in-action program, will help us answer that question. We are invited to reflect on how an encounter with our neighbor as companions on life’s journeys—can be transformative. We will see how our prayers, fasting and alms can support those worldwide who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities. For more information visit: crisricebowl.org” - CRS Rice Bowls available at the doors.

All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more

people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.
