MISSION STATEMENT AD INTRA (for ourselves):
To deepen our experience of Jesus Christ through a vibrant
sacramental life and our common liturgical worship. AD EXTRA (to the world):
To reach our vocational fulfillment individually and as a
community by engaging our neighbor with the Gospel Message.
Ig le s ia Catól ica de La Santa Cruz
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK—DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR 2
The World in View from a Believer’s Perspective
A t Scottsdale’s Museum of the West you’ll find a
life size bronze sculpture commemorating
‘American Horse’, a 19th century chieftain. He is
remembered for his peaceful support of the
American Government and worked with tribesman on
behalf of the Government looking to establish peaceful
accords and government sponsored educational
opportunities wherever possible. American Horse went
so far as to send his own children, the first from his tribe
to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania.
Who can’t admire his openness of mind?
We Catholics have seen an explosion of Catholic
resources aimed at helping us understand our faith more
deeply: the EWTN smart phone app, Bishop Robert
Barron’s ‘Catholicism: The Pivotal Players’, Bishop
Thomas Olmstead’s Manual for Men released a few days
ago at the Annual Men’s Conference—and the list goes
on. I sometimes get the feeling that some of us are in a
candy store and the owner says, ‘take what you like at no
charge’ and we’d simply rather gaze at the wrappings.
No one can stand to say, ‘I know enough about the
Church and Jesus to get by’. That affirmation is one of
spiritual atrophy. Find your way to deepen your
understanding of the faith or, at least, drop in and see
me for a recommendation. I dare say that, on this point,
openness of mind is openness to God.
Your Pastor,
Fr. Larry
Padre Lorenzo

Lord, to all those I meet today, may your love and goodness
come shining through. May the care I give them, my kindness
to them, my sharing with them a few of the gifts you give to me
help them in turn to spread this love to each one they meet
too. May you make of each of us a blessing, a healing, a lifting
hope to everyone you place in our lives.
Help us see your presence in their souls and faces.
“Before all else, the Gospel invites us to
respond to the God of love who saves us, to see
God in others and to go forth from ourselves to
seek the good of others.” – Pope Francis
The annual Charity and Development Appeal

Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent but it is also one of the
most popular and important holy days in the liturgical
calendar. Ash Wednesday begins the penitential season of
fasting, prayer and alms giving. Ashes are a symbol of penance
made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they
help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. Ash
Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation however, it is a day
of reflection, prayer, and fasting from meat.

Church Guidelines for Fasting &
Abstinence during Lent (Source: USCCB.org)
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting
and abstinence for Catholics.
In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting
are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is
permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that
together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning
abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin
Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
"If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth
is not in us.... If we say that we have not sinned, we make [God] a
liar, and His word is not in us" (1 Jn 1:8-10).

Congratulations to 33
of our unbaptized
parishioners who have made the
commitment to follow God and His
teachings and are ready to receive
sacraments at this year’s Easter Vigil. These children and
adults have been participating in the RCIA journey, learning
about the Catholic faith, and growing spiritually in their
relationship with God.
The Rite of Sending for Election for Catechumens will be held
next Sunday, February 18th at the 10:00 a.m. Mass. When the
parish community takes part in this discernment process, they
continue to understand that it is the entire Church’s
responsibility and privilege of initiating new members.
Following the mass, the Catechumens will travel to the
Cathedral to celebrate the Rite of Election with Bishop Thomas
Olmsted. This rite gives public acknowledgement to the fact
that God has “elected” or chosen these people. Please
continue to keep in prayer all those who are preparing to
receive sacraments during the upcoming Easter season.
Blessings to

The central claim of the Catholic Faith hinges on
the Person of Jesus Christ. Renew your
understanding of the truth of Christ’s divinity and
the salvation offered to us by his Death and
Resurrection. .
In The Case for Jesus, Dr. Brant Pitre, answers several key
questions, including:
Were the four Gospels really anonymous?
● Are the Gospels folklore? Or are they biographies?
● Were the four Gospels written too late to be reliable?
● What about the so-called “Lost Gospels,” such as “Q” and the
Gospel of Thomas?
● Did Jesus claim to be God?
● Is Jesus divine in all four Gospels? Or only in John?
● Did Jesus fulfill the Jewish prophecies of the Messiah?
● Why was Jesus crucified?
● What is the evidence for the Resurrection?
Dr. Brant Pitre shows how the divine claims of Jesus of Nazareth can
only be understood by putting them in their ancient Jewish context.

Would you recognize a fraudulent situation or
scam pertaining to anything connected to
caregiving? There are many ways for
unscrupulous individuals to take advantage
of caregivers and care receivers. Sometimes scams are
initiated by those right within the medical field. One frequent
fraudulent situation is when a professional caregiver becomes
very friendly and patronizing with a care receiver in an attempt
to learn more about his/her finances. Sometimes, these
individuals will create hardship stories and appeal to the care
receivers to give them some assistance or a loan. In one
situation, the professional caregiver tried to convince the care
receiver that he was to write her a check at the end of her shift
for her services. Fortunately, the care receiver knew that the
agency would send a bill to the family caregiver and ignored
her pleas. To become skilled at spotting scams and fraud,
attend the next FSL caregiver educational session at Holy
Cross on Saturday, February 17 at 10:00 a.m. in classroom
D. Attendees are asked to pre-register for this event by
calling Evelyn Sanchez at 602-882-5197.
Another opportunity for acquiring more caregiving knowledge
and wisdom is our caregivers’ support group meetings. We will
meet again on Wednesday, February 14, at 2:30 p.m. in

Crismon Road, Mesa and Thursday, February 22, at 1:30
