Educational ObjectivesAfter attending the symposium, participants should be able to• Recognize the emergence and importance of targeted (disease-site specific)

personalized interdisciplinary approaches;• Identify the role, importance and timing of each discipline (medical, radiation

and surgery) for each cancer in an interdisciplinary manner;• Describe novel diagnostic and treatment approaches being developed and

implemented to optimize patient treatment outcomes.

Target AudienceThis symposium will be beneficial to medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, general surgeons, internists, physician assistants, oncology nurses, and advanced practice nurses involved in the care of patients with breast, esophageal, gastrointestinal, head and neck, melanoma, sarcoma and thoracic cancers.

Educational MethodLectures • Case Presentations Including Interactive Audience Participation Questions and Answers

EvaluationA course evaluation form will provide participants with the opportunity to comment on the value of the program content to their practice decisions, performance improvement activities, or possible impact on patient health status. Participants will also have the opportunity to comment on any perceived commercial bias in the presentations as well as to identify future educational topics.

Accreditation/Credit DesignationThe University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 26.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CME Certificates and Attendance Verification CertificatesCertificates awarding AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM or certificates documenting attendance will be distributed to participants when an individual departs the conference. To obtain a CME certificate, physicians must submit a completed evaluation questionnaire and a CME Verification Form.

Upon request, a record of attendance (certificate) will be provided on-site to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.

Oncology Nursing 2010: Empowered for Excellence(See registration form for separate registration and fee. For those wishing to attend the Monday and Tuesday of the Symposium, the cost will be $75 additional.)

Goal: A two-day program designed to introduce nurses to recent developments in chemotherapy administration standards, and improvements in safety methodologies for hazardous drug handling. We will explore a modern systematic approach to quality decision making, first and second line therapies for the treatment of acute leukemias, and the fundamentals of proton therapy. We will also convey the principles for recognizing stress and addressing sexuality in the cancer patient.

Educational Objectives: After attending the conference, participants should be able to

• Discuss updates for nurses involved in the administration of chemotherapy relative to the associated safety issues affecting patients and personnel and allow for discussion of potential practice changes.

• Explore proton therapy as a treatment modality including patient selection and allow for a dialogue to assist nurses in identifying practice issues.

• Determine the applicability of the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Professional Action Coordinating Teams (PACTS) approach to developing quality nursing practice processes.

• Explain options for first and second line treatment modalities for patients diagnosed with Acute Myologenous Leukemia and Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.

• Review nursing tools that will assist nurses to identify distress in the oncology patient and formulate appropriate interventions.

• Identify updates relevant to the handling of hazardous drugs and allow for discussions about potential changes in nursing practice.

• Discuss the application of genetics in the planning of care for oncology patients.

• Distinguish tools that will assist nurses in recognizing actual/potential sexual dysfunction among oncology patients.

Nursing Credits: Nursing Continuing Education Contact Hours will be awarded.
