about tragedy in his famous

book ‘The poetics’.

Definition of Tragedy

Tragedy, then is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude, in the language embellished with each kind of artistic ornament, the several kinds being found in separate parts of the play; in the form of action, not of narrative through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation – catharsis of these and similar emotions”.

Plot is very important component of tragedy. We can say plot is the soul of Tragedy.

According to Aristotle,

“ Plot is the harmonious arrangement of all the incidents.”

The second important character of the tragedy is the character. In comedy, many characters are important but in Tragedy, the hero is important.

Diction means writing skill. According to Aristotle Diction is,

“The expression of themeaning in words”.

Aristotle says that the chorus should have important like the actor. They should integrate into the play like an actor.

Spectacle means exhibition.

It is related with the stage performance.

But Aristotle says that those who rely on spectacle create a sense of which is not of the terrible, but of the monstrous effect.
