Join Southern’S “original” CollegeFounded in 1869, Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s original mission was preparing teachers for the growing number of schools being established in the region and across the country. Some 140 years later, the College of Education and Human Services has expanded that mission, educating some of the nation’s leading teachers, administra-tors and social service professionals. SIUC has always been a leader in education and human services. Our programs offer the opportunity to study on campus and in classrooms, agencies, and organizations in southern Illinois and beyond. The College offers a wide array of undergraduate special-ties, ranging from elementary education to athletic training and special education

to social work, along with comprehensive graduate programs. Our alumni are leaders in both research and practice with a primary focus on understanding and improving the lives of children, adolescents and adults. We invite you to join us! Working in education and human services is very much a calling. It is to enter into a pro-fession that is based on hope, in essence the hope that we can all play a role in helping to make this a better world in which to live and to learn. With excellent and caring faculty, our College offers you the kind of education needed to be well-prepared as a reflective, knowledgeable and skilled professional. We welcome the opportunity to inspire and guide you on your journey.

Fast Facts • Faculty and staff in our College garnered

more than $19 million in external funding during the past fiscal year. The money helps to fund a variety of initiatives, including school and human service partnerships, student assistantships, equipment and travel, and summer support for faculty and students.

• Our faculty have been honored with many awards and appointments, for example: Distinguished Teacher Educator Award by the Association of Teacher Educators; Distinguished Scholar Award from the American Association for Health Education; Fellow of the American Educational Research Association; and President of the National Rehabilitation Association.

• The School of Social Work has been honored by the Council on Social Work Education with their Partners in Advancing Education for International Social Work Award.

• We offer an extensive Study Abroad program, especially for students working in the health and social service fields, which in recent years has included study in Austria, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Egypt, Germany, India, and Mexico.

• The Department of Workforce Education and Development offers undergraduate programs at 17 off-campus sites from coast to coast, including at 16 military bases, which was instrumental in SIUC being listed by Military Advanced Education as one of the Top 20 “military friendly universities” in the country.

• Our college offers dozens of scholarships, typically awarding over $150,00 in tuition, fees and living expenses to its students each year. Scholarships are awarded at both the college and academic unit level.

• The Early Childhood Education program was honored as an Entitled Institution by Gateways to Opportunity: The Illinois Early Care and Education Professional Development Network. Such distinction is held by just one other four-year higher education institution in the state.

I always start my classes with ice-breakers to establish rapport with students and to increase their interactions with each other. I try to learn every student’s name within the first week.

SIUC’s College of Education and Human Services is well respected nationally in its preparation of teachers, administrators and social service professionals. Our Educa-tion programs together have been listed in the Top 100 of the US News & World Report rankings, among all programs at public and private colleges and universities in the country. This is true as well for our programs in Social Work and Communica-tion Disorders and Sciences. The same magazine has given our Rehabilitation Counseling program the lofty ranking of #6 in the country, and our Health Education doctoral program is rated 11th best in the nation by a scholarly journal in the field.

Our academic programs offer the op-portunity to study with highly regarded instructors and researchers who care

deeply about their work with students. All programs include strong founda-tional coursework that include the latest scholarship and approaches in the field. In addition, students engage in many field experiences in actual work settings so that they will have ample opportunity to try out what they learn in the college classroom and apply in real-life situations. It is our primary goal to provide the experiences, in and out of the classroom, so that every one of our graduates can be successful in their chosen profession. Our administrators, faculty and staff are dedicated to making that happen for each of the students.

While most of our programs are based on campus and meet during traditional class hours, some of our programs are provided

at off-campus sites and/or are scheduled during non-traditional times, for example on weekends and evenings.

Our alumni are known in the state and throughout the nation and across the globe for their professionalism, expertise and compassion. As a student in our College, you will meet many others who share your values and commitment to service, and you will have the opportunity to form life-long friendships and professional relationships. These relationships may be initiated in your classes or in one of the many student organizations that can be found in our College. Making such connections is an integral part of our College, something that we think enhances not only the education one experiences at SIUC but also opportunities for job placements.

Comparing what I learned at SIU with what others learned at other universities affirmed that the breadth and depth of my intellectual and professional development was unparalleled.

My service trip week let me tap into my teaching ability. I left New Orleans knowing that I am going to be a great teacher. I have so much gratitude for the professors here that have mentored me and made me the teacher I didn’t know I could be. Krista R. Cawvey, early childhood education major from Collinsville
