• Situational Awareness Situational Awareness is the perception of environmental elements with respect to time and/or space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status after some variable has changed, such as time.

• Situational Awareness Situational Awareness involves being aware of what is happening around you to understand how information, events, and your own actions will impact your goals and objectives, both now and in the near future.

Perception (Level 1 SA)Perception (Level 1 SA): : The first step in achieving SASA is to perceive the status, attributes, and dynamics of relevant elements in the environment which can lead to an awareness of multiple situational elements (objects, events, people, systems, environmental factors) and their current states (locations, conditions, modes, actions).

Comprehension (Level 2 SA)Comprehension (Level 2 SA): : The next step in SASA formation involves a synthesis Level 1 elements through the processes of pattern recognition, interpretation, and evaluation. It requires integrating this information to understand how it will impact upon the individual's goals and objectives.

Projection (Level 3 SA)Projection (Level 3 SA): : The third step in SASA involves the ability to project the future actions of the elements in the environment. It is achieved through knowledge of the status and dynamics of the elements and comprehension of the situation (Levels 1 and 2 SA), and then extrapolating this information forward in time to determine how it will affect future states of the operational environment.

• In the workplace a staggering 80% of safety incidents are believed to be caused by human error.

• A lack of Situational Situational Awareness Awareness has been identified as one of the chief contributing factors

• Situational Awareness Situational Awareness is dependent on familiarity with the task and prior success

• Perception of risk decreases every time a task is successfully performed

• Similarly, as the experienced performer begins to feel in control of his work situation he becomes willing to bear greater risks

• These elements of human nature feed on each other

• Ask questions about our work environment and consider the consequences.

• Stay focused – Mind on Task

• Keep your eyes and ears open – Eyes on Task, Line of Fire, Balance/Traction/Grip

• Identify & assess new hazards as you see them• Be aware of change and stop to re-assess

– THINK BIG PICTURE

• Communicate with the team and others• If in doubt stop the job and re-assess
