SITUATION:

It's Monday morning, and you've got a strange sense that today will be more hectic than usual. You store your frozen dinner in the office fridge, sit down at your desk, and pull up your Random House Publishers email account. Mr. Scattersworth, your boss, has sent the following email to you and all of the other interns at Random House...

To: YouCC: all other lowly, unpaid internsSubject: OMG, Into the Wild!

Greetings, interns!

Have you guys read Into the Wild!? Incredible little book! In fact, I like it so much that I want to publish a companion book of Transcendentalist writings... IMEDIATELY. I've got our paid interns on compilation duty, but I want you guys to select the cover art. I've attached some famous landscape paintings below, and I would like you to each pick the one you think most exemplifies the tenets and traits of Transcendentalism. Be sure to include at least two pieces of textual evidence (from any Transcendentalist authors, or from Into the Wild) in your argument. When constructing an argument, it might be beneficial to first find quotes that you feel sum up some aspect of Transcendentalism, then connect those quotes to formal aspects of the painting(s). Also, feel free to contrast the paintings to enhance your point.

Remember, the most persuasive argument might just bump you into a job here at Random House. How would you like to be a... paid intern?

- Thaddeus H. Scattersworth,President of Publishing, Random House Inc.
