Situation, Challenges & Prospects in the Renewable Energy Market
in Eastern Africa@
Kenya : Strengths & Trends
Installed electricity capacity: 2328 MWElectrification rate: 50%Goal: National Strategy 2013-2017 to develop +5000 MW by 2017
Strengths 90% of renewables in electricity mix well-established power sector dynamic private sector: 10 IPPs
producing 650MW (= 28%)
Trends Today: continued focus on generation
and priority to strengthen transmission & distribution networks
Tomorrow: optimize performance of generation and transmission (dispatch) and energy efficiency
Kenya installed electricity capacity (2016)
Situation, Challenges & Prospects in the Renewable Energy Market
in Eastern Africa
Kenya : Opportunities & Lookout
Optimize the performance of generation and transmission (better dispatch) Off grid & Mini grids => substantial market for investors Hybridization of mini grids => national program Energy efficiency (buildings (residential, public, industrial, etc.), transportation)
Opportunities
Lookout Feed-in-Tariff Lack of legal frameworks for integration of mini grid into national grid Delays in project completion (land acquisition, compensation, etc.)
Situation, Challenges & Prospects in the Renewable Energy Market
in Eastern Africa
Regional Energy Integration: Overview of Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda
Ethiopia Tanzania Uganda
Installed electricity cap.: 4284 MW Electrification rate: 55%
Country Strategy: GTP II 2015-2020 Objective to have 17 350 MW by 2020 (x4).
Renewables targets: 7580 MW hydro, 5200MW wind, 500 MW geothermal, 420MW biomass
Installed electricity cap.: 1583 MW Electrification rate: 24%
Country Strategy: Vision 2025 Objective to have 10 000 MW by 2025 (x6).
No quantified renewable targets. Priority to develop geothermal and very active in off grid & mini grids.
Installed electricity cap.: 900 MW Electrification rate: 15-20%
Country Strategy: National objective to develop 2500 MW by 2020.
No quantified renewable targets. Success of Get FiT program (58% produced by IPPs). Mini grid and PV standalone systems.
Situation, Challenges & Prospects in the Renewable Energy Market
in Eastern Africa
Regional Energy Integration:Eastern Africa Power Pool
Current & committed interconnectors (2020) Recommended new lines by 2025 Tomorrow: transmission between EAPP & SAPP
Advantage: economies of scale, power generated at a lower cost
Requirements: economic & political cooperation, a set of common rules
Challenge: optimize performance of generation and transmission
Limits: all countries ambition to become net power exporters
