SITRA, an acronym for South India Textile Research Association has completed a more than 60 years in textile service. It has achieved rapid progress in the realization of the broad objective it set forth during its establishment in 1956. SITRA is governed by a Council of Administration consisting of member representatives of the Industry, Government and Scientists and is sponsored by the Industry and partly supported by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

Sprawling in a campus of about 13.14 hectares, SITRA is situated at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and is within easy access of a large number of textile mills. The modern and architecturally designed buildings with a floor space of about 15,000 sq. m., house well equipped air conditioned testing, electronics and calibration laboratories, pilot mill, computer and CAD centres, workshop, jute Mill, library, Training centres, auditorium as well as offices of the different Divisions. SITRA has a full range of sophisticated textile testing instruments and modern machines and is one of the best equipped textile research organizations in the World.

SITRA's services are utilized by more than 200 members, comprising close to 275 units, spread all over India and 3 foreign nations - Bangladesh, Indonesia and Thailand. In addition, around 75 small spinning mills enroll every year as Technical Service cardholders, which entitles them to avail some of the major services offered. The various activities of SITRA include carrying out research on various problems relating to the textile industry with a view to reducing cost, improving quality and ensuring optimum utilization of materials, machines and manpower in the country. Includes basic research relating to materials, machines and processes used by the textile industry in order to get a thorough understanding of their nature. More than 500 studies have been carried out in applied research which has been the biggest strength of SITRA. Physical and chemical testing of fibre, yarn and fabric in its NABL accredited (ISO/IEC 17025:2005) laboratories equipped with the latest state-of-the-art instruments available globally. The Eco-testing laboratory, the only one of its kind in South India, tests samples on eco friendliness.

Consultation on a wide variety of areas like, modernisation, cost reduction, techno-economic viability, diagnostic studies, energy conservation, work assignments, productivity improvement, quality control, scientific employee recruitment, machinery maintenance, scientific assessment of work assignments, machinery valuation, arbitration etc. , apart from regular inter-firm studies on productivity, cost and financial performance.

SITRA also provides advice to various departments of Central and State governments on a wide range of issues such as long-term viability of the organised sector of the textile industry, staffing and service function of operatives in textile mills, fibre base for the future, per capita availability of cloth, working of spinning mills, manpower planning etc. SITRA has also contributed to the framing of National Textile Policy and rehabilitation of the sick mills. Development of textile machinery and instruments to help increased production, improved quality and import substitution is another major activity of SITRA. Over 50 testing instruments, which are important from the point of view of quality control and import substitution have been developed by SITRA. Apart from licensing many of its instruments, SITRA has also obtained 68 patents which include new machines & processes (18), products & chemical processes (5), improvement on machines & new equipments (45).

SITRA is a recipient of close to 100 awards from eminent organisations over the years. SITRA has published more than 750 publications comprising research reports, survey reports, mill control reports, focus and trends over the past 50 years. In addition, based on SITRA's R&D work and studies in mills, a number of reference books for the management of spinning mills have been brought out. SITRA also publishes the norms that reflect the top 10% level of productivity and quality in the Indian Textile Industry which are used as benchmarks by various organisations. Close to 50000 copies of the publication has been sold- highest for any textile related publication in India.

Training of personnel from the textile industry on various aspects of textiles and general management at all levels - managerial, supervisory, clerical and workers – is another major activity of SITRA. SITRA's programmes are being used as a medium for dissemination of the knowledge it has gained through its Research and Consultancy and testing activities over the years. SITRA has emerged as an important centre for International training to candidates from third world countries. Sixty six batches of the programme have been conducted since its initiation in 1974 and around 1720 participants from 78 developing countries have so far benefitted out of SITRA's expertise in textile technology.

Sharing of knowledge and transfer of appropriate technology in the textile industry. Disseminating and strengthening awareness relating to India's expertise in improving productivity, quality, cost and waste control in the other developing countries.Creating and strengthening awareness about the superior quality of modern Indian textile machinery and their cost effectiveness.Develop in managerial capabilities among the participants in order to manage and sustain effective management of personnel in organisations.Improving International understanding and goodwill between India and other developing

nations.

SITRA is situated very close (just a minute's travel) to the Coimbatore Airport which is connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram and also to a few international cites.

With demands of customer for products attaining quality levels becoming more and more stringent, it has become all the more imperative for mills to attain the levels of bench marked quality which keeps evolving depending upon the needs of customer as well as industry demands. It is in this context that textile mills are looking for qualified technicians to man their quality control department. The programme intends to highlight theoretical concepts of quality and the instruments involved, and evolve strategies for its implementation in a phased manner.
