JohnBrief Overview

The Gospel of John gives a unique perspective of the life of Jesus. John introduces Jesus not from his birth like luke’s gospel, but from the beginning with God as the Word of God, as the creator, and as the true light of the World (1:1–4). John’s gospel explains the reason Jesus was sent to earth by God and begins with the affirmation that Jesus is the eternal Word who was with God, who is God, and who became flesh to dwell among his people. Although John’s gospel tells of many personal encounters with Jesus, John is an excellent teacher who imparts spiritual revelation from the memories of an eyewitness. Thus, the Gospel of John has a thread of spiritual insight woven throughout that focuses more on spiritual themes than on historical accounts.

There are two views associated with the dating of John’s gospel: in one, it is believed John wrote his gospel around A.d. 80 to supplement the other three (Matthew, Mark, and luke); the second supports the idea that John penned his gospel between A.d. 50 and 70, independent of the other three. regardless, John hoped to reach the non-christian world with his gospel, as he clearly states in John 20:31.

A major emphasis of John’s gospel is that Jesus is the son of God, meaning he is fully God and fully man. John employs several spiritual themes to make the case for Jesus as the one through whom all peoples are blessed. These themes are seen in three truths: 1) God’s love and glory are revealed in Jesus (1:14 and 3:16); 2) Jesus is the son of God, sent to complete the Father’s work of salvation in the earth (4:34); and 3) Jesus is the only way to the Father to obtain salvation and eternal life (14:6 and 20:31).

John as It Relates to Sisters in FaithJohn describes women as active, innovative participants in advancing the kingdom of God. Through this gospel, we see that Jesus’ attitude represented a paradigm shift in the cultural attitude toward women of that time.

one of the most radical evidences of Jesus’ paradigm-altering attitude toward women was his boldness in teaching them. Jesus was willing to risk public scandal in order to teach the samaritan woman at the well (4:5–26); the adulterous woman whom he forgave (8:7–11); and the two sisters, Mary and Martha, who were both friends of Jesus (11:24–26). As a result, each of these women was spiritually awakened and activated into a new life.

These women didn’t try to cover up or justify the weaknesses in their lives; rather, they acknowledged their need for healing or deliverance. They were teachable, open to truth, and hungry to learn how to live in the kingdom. And they were willing to relinquish control of their lives so faith could enter and bring them into a true friendship and intimacy with christ. We would do well to follow their example as true sisters in the faith.

PrayerJesus, thank You for leaving Your home in glory and coming to earth to save sinful man. Thank You for dying on the cross for me. Help me to fully understand who You are, and to live unashamed of that truth.

Who is Jesus? The people of Jesus’ day grappled with this question. John the Baptist thought he knew, then later in life asked, “Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?” (Luke 7:19). Jewish lead-ers said He was from the devil (see Mark 3:22). A Samaritan woman called Him a Jew, then a prophet, then wondered if He might be the Messiah (see John 4:9–25). And the night before He was crucified, the Roman governor himself wondered: “Art thou the King of the Jews?” (John 18:33).

But Jesus’ disciples knew exactly who He was. When Jesus asked, “But whom say ye that I am?” Peter replied, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:15, 16). Indeed, He is.

He is Savior (Luke 2:11); Lord (Acts 16:31); Redeemer (Galatians 3:13); “the resurrection, and the life” (John 11:25); “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6); and “the light of the world” (John 8:12). Jesus clothed Himself in human flesh and walked the earth for a short moment in time. But He always existed. This is revealed beautifully in the Gospel of John: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God” (John 1:1, 2).

As glorious as these truths about the beginning are, we also have a future hope. This same Jesus who always was, the One who came to earth, died for our sins, and was resurrected . . . will come again (Acts 1:11).

p r A c T i c A l A p p l i c AT i o nPeople today still grapple with the question of Jesus’ identity. Many are willing to regard Him as “a good man” and even a prophet. But as His followers, we know His identity is central to our faith. We need to be equipped with the truth: He is the Son of God and Savior of the world. He is the only hope for mankind, the embodiment of grace and truth. And we should freely share this truth. For Jesus said, “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32).

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. (John 4:14)

one seemingly normal day, i walked down to the well to fetch some water. i came upon a man there who asked me to bring him a drink from the well. i was shocked! The man was clearly a Jew and i was a samaritan. The Jews considered us nothing more than dirt. But this man spoke strange words about his identity and the living waters he could bring to my thirsty soul. he said drinking the water from the well would only leave me thirsting again; but he promised if i would drink from his living water, i would have everlasting life.

Then he asked me to go get my husband, and i told him i didn’t have one. he re-sponded by telling me about all the men in my past. he knew the man i lived with was not my husband. i realized he was a prophet.

he spoke of salvation. he told me it was not just for the Jews; it was for everyone, even me! i had heard about the promised Messiah who would come into the world and answer all my questions; i wondered if the man before me could be the one? i told everyone about him. Many came to hear what he had to say and left believing, as i did, that truly, he is the son of God.

Christ Witnesses to the Woman at the Well

4 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and abaptized more

disciples than John,2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)3 He left Ju-dae′-a, and departed again into Galilee.4 And he 1must needs go through Sa-ma′-ri-a.5 Then cometh he to a city of Sa-ma′-ri-a, which is called Sy′-char, near to the 1parcel of ground that aJacob bgave to his son Joseph.6 Now Jacob’s well was there. 22 Ye worship aye know not what: we know what we worship: for bsalvation is of the Jews.23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall awor-ship the Father in bspirit cand in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.24

aGod is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Mes-si′-as acometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, bhe will tell us all things.26 Jesus saith unto her, aI that speak unto thee am he.

Christ Witnesses to the Disciples27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with 1the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,29 Come, see a man, awhich told me all things that ever I did: 1is not this the Christ?30 Then they went out of the city, and 1came unto him.31 In the mean while his disciples 1prayed him, saying, 2Master, eat.32 But he said unto them, I have 1meat to eat that ye know not of.33 Therefore said the disciples one to an-other, Hath any man brought him 1ought to eat?34 Jesus saith unto them, aMy 1meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to bfinish his work.35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh aharvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; bfor they are white already to harvest.36

aAnd he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that bboth he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

7 There cometh a woman of Sa-ma′-ri-a to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy 1meat.)9 Then saith the woman of Sa-ma′-ri-a unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Sa-ma′-ri-a? for athe Jews have no dealings with the bSa-mar′-i-tans.10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the agift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee bliving water.11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his 1cattle?13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:14 But awhosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him bshall be in him a 1well of water springing up into everlasting life.15

aThe woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy hus-band, and come hither.17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy hus-band: in that saidst thou truly.19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, aI perceive that thou art a prophet.20 Our fathers worshipped in athis mountain; and ye say, that in bJerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, awhen ye shall nei-ther in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusa-lem, worship the Father.

And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.52 Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to 1amend. unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself be-lieved, and his whole 1house.54 This is again the second 1miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Ju-dae′-a into Galilee.

Christ Heals the Impotent Man

Christ Heals the Nobleman’s Son46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, awhere he made the water wine. aMany therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is 1an hard saying; who can 2hear it?61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples 1murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?62

aWhat and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?63

aIt is the spirit that 1quickeneth; the bflesh profiteth nothing: the cwords that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.64 But athere are some of you that be-lieve not. For bJesus knew from the be-ginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.65 And he said, Therefore asaid I unto you, that no man can come unto me, ex-cept it were given unto him of my Father.66

11 Then athe Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?12 And athere was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for bsome said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.13 Howbeit no man spake openly of him afor fear of the Jews.

aAnd the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never 1learned?16 Jesus answered them, and said, aMy doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.17

aIf any man will do his will, he shall know 1of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.18

aHe that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that bseeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and cno unrighteousness is in him.19

Israel Is Divided over Christ40 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is athe Prophet.41 Others said, This is athe Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Gali-lee?42

11 Now a certain man was sick, named Laz′-a-rus, of Beth′-a-ny, the town of

aMary and her sister Martha.2 (aIt was that Mary which anointed the Lord with 1ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Laz′-a-rus was sick.)3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sis-ter, and Laz′-a-rus.6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, ahe 1abode two days still in the same place where he was.7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Ju-dae′-a again.8 His disciples say unto him, 1Master, the Jews of late sought to astone thee; and goest thou thither again?9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? aIf any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the blight of this world.10 But aif a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Laz′-a-rus asleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but

1Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Laz′-a-rus also, awhom he had raised from the dead.10

i wish my sister, Martha, would just sit down somewhere. she’s always busy, always doing something. But she’s missing everything! she even allowed her busyness to pull her from Jesus when he was teaching here in our home. That was not the time to be cleaning and feeding people. Well, i stayed right at Jesus’ feet, as close as i could get. Because i’m a woman, men won’t teach me the ways of God, but Jesus was not afraid of man’s opinion. he taught anyone who would listen, even women.

But when my brother lazarus fell ill, it was four days before Jesus got here, and lazarus died. i thought it was too late. i did not believe anyone could raise the dead. so, i didn’t even go out to meet Jesus when he arrived. Then i saw his power with my own eyes. We all stood and watched as, at Jesus’ command, my brother arose from the dead and walked out of his tomb!

My view of the lord changed that day; instead of seeing Jesus just as my Teacher, i then understood that he is my savior. The next time he came to dinner, i honored him by massaging his feet with the expensive oils i had been saving; then i dried them with my hair. i gave Jesus the best i had to give.

United to WinI have a tendency to want to be alone.That’s okay . . . but not always best.We’re built to have relationships.

But trusting othersis difficult, nonetheless.

After so many letdowns,I choose to put my trust in God, not man.

However, I’ve failed to truly trust Himby neglecting the friendships that

He granted.

I don’t want anyone to hold me accountable.My sin, I’d rather hide.

So, the one person who encouraged meto stay committed,

I chased them away, because ofpride.

I get it now—the importance of fellowshipwith believers who live according to the Word.

They’re placed in my life to pray andkeep me on track when my vision

is blurred.

There’s something powerful about our bond—united in Christ;Geared up for war when the enemy tries to attack.

A heaven-sent friend won’t stand and watch;But they’ll get in the ring with you and

fight back.

So, Father, help me to trust you.Whomever you bring, I want to receive with grace.

Help me to forgive; teach me to trust—Whatever it takes to win this
