August 12, 2018 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

What else is there to give when one has already given away their body and their life? What more can one say or do to demonstrate love for another when all they have has been given to another? This total giving of self to loved ones cannot be trumped by flowery words or material gifts that are fleeting. This is the ultimate in love. This is the love Jesus had for us on the way to his passion, at the institution of the Holy Eucharist. This is the love he has for us daily in the celebration of the Mass on altars in every church, in every city, in every nation on earth. No one can give more. No one can ask for more. This is the true heart of Christian stewardship. If you take the time to gaze upon your God in the simplest of forms and begin to reflect on what has actually taken place with bread and wine becoming the presence of the Divine, then you can begin to understand true humility, sacrifice, and love. And when you have the privilege to take that Real Presence into your body at the meal where you are an honored guest, you become one with the One who is the embodiment of stewardship. Then, you must ask the question of yourself, "How can I even begin to reflect the love that I have encountered at this feast?" The answer is you can begin with the simple actions of the day: where will you go, whom will you meet, and in what work will you partake? Jesus Christ has shown that the greatest gift ever given can be disguised in this world in a piece of bread. By joining your body to his, he can now transform human hearts, not by grand acts, but by everyday acts, by everyday people practicing Everyday Stewardship.

MARSHALLTOWN STRONG! We would like to know all of our parishioners at St. Henry and St. Mary that have been personally affected in some way by the tornado. Were your vehicles damaged, windows broken in your home or roof needs repaired? Were many of your personal items in your home destroyed? Please contact the St. Henry office if you were affected by the tornado.

THEOLOGY OF THE BODY We are made in the image and likeness of God. God is love. We have heard this our whole faith-life. Thus, we are made in the image and likeness of love. And we are created to make a gift of ourselves to our beloved. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus quotes Genesis “For this reason a man will leave his father and his mother and unite with his wife, and the two will be one flesh.” And what is the reason? The union of the man and woman points to God’s plan for love, the man and woman make visible the invisible love of God; to love like God by making a gift of one’s self. There are free copies available in the Narthex of the book, “Theology of the Body.”

SISTER PARISH NEWS - FROM FATHER DON On September 4th, three parishioners from our sister parish, St. Martin de Porres, will arrive in Marshalltown. Father Cesar, Roberto and Mateo will be visiting us for over a week and will return to El Salvador on September 13th. I am very excited to show them our parish and community. They are especially

interested in meeting with the youth and seeing how we work with the poor in our area. Father Cesar has been working on some English in preparation for his visit and Roberto has dual citizenship and speaks English very well. The next few weeks we will be preparing activities and hospitality for them and I hope to show them a wonderful welcome here. When they return to El Salvador, I will be going with them. I am going to be taking a sabbatical to work on my Spanish and build up our sister parish relationship. I will be gone for almost two months. Father Tom and Father Bernie will cover my Masses here at St. Henry and St. Mary. With two retired priests in town, I felt I would never have a better opportunity to take time for learning and for my own spiritual growth. I know that between them and Father Alan and the staff, everything will be left in great hands during my time away.

CHRIST OUR LIFE - CATHOLIC REGIONAL CONFERENCE EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF ONE.

If each of us invites just one person to this great conference, imagine the impact we will make! Join us in this effort to fill Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines September 29 & 30. Who will YOU invite?

For tickets and more information, go to ChristOurLifeIowa.com

"You are called to stand up for life! To respect and defend the mystery of life always and everywhere, including the lives of unborn babies, giving real help and encouragement to mothers in difficult situations. You are called to work and pray against abortion."
