supposed to turn myself in in 2005.

Jamie: So you were on the lam for threeyears?Saaphyri: Yeah, I guess you can say that.''The lam:' Jamie? You know you sound likea real criminal.

Saaphyri: So after that I went to court and(the judge) extended my sentence tothree years.

Jamie: Instead of what?Saaphyri: Instead of two it went to three.

Jamie: Was that because you were on thelam?Saaphyri: Yeah, on the lam, Jamie.

call them modules. In each module there'sabout 2- or 300 girls.

Jamie: Wow..Saaphyri: So there are different cells andyou eat in that one module. After you'resentenced, they send you on a bus thattakes you to prison. In the county jail youwear blue. Once you get to prison, every-body starts off wearing orange when

you're first taken in. You stayon this one yard for like twomonths and you wearorange. Everybody looks likeoranges, you know?

Jamie: Do you know why it'sorange?Saaphyri: Because theywanna see you. The orangeis so reflective till they cansee you up in the towers sothat people can't leave.People go through a lotwhen you're first processedin prison. They wanna killthemselves, they wannaleave. That's why they wantyou to wear orange. Plus, soyou won't blend in with anyof the other inmates.

Jamie: And the otherinmates wear blue?Saaphyri: Right. Or gray orwhite because you canwear regular sweatsuits orwhatever once you comeout of the processing part.

Jamie: Did you go throughtrauma? What were you feel-ing?Saaphyri: I was feeling-ohman. I felt dumb, you know,for even being in prison. Justpain, in general. But at thesame time, it's like I have somuch faith that I still know'that I'll be able to getthrough this.

Jamie: So, what was a daylike there? .1mean, after whattime did you adjust?Saaphyri: When we first got

there, when we had to wear orange, I hadbeen in jail with several people for a while.You know, we all end up going to prison atthe same time. So it was like, we would bearound each other. Wewould sit there andwe would talk .... (laughs) All the boys thatwe ain't gon' get to see. All the food-Imean, Jamie, you wouldn't believe howmuch we talked about food. It's like, younot gon' get no crab, you not gon' get nosteak, you not gon' get no avocados, youdon't get oranges .

Jamie: (laughs)Saaphyri: (laughs) I'm serious!

Jamie: (Iaughter)./ watch old black &white movies. They don't use that lan-guage anymore in prison, dothey?-Saaphyri: I don't think so.

Jamie: Where did they takeyou?Saaphyri: Oh, okay: First whenthey got me from the airport,we went to the substation, like,the LAPD substation. And thenyou stay there for a couple ofdays. And then I went toLynnwood, which is wherelindsay Lohan was. She was notin the part everybody else was.It's a whole different regular lit- .tie something prissy. But yeah,they take us to Lynnwood andstay there. For anybody whohas never been to jail, it's horri-ble. They only let you take ashower every other day. Andwhen you do get to take ashower. they only want to letyou take a shower for like fiveminutes.

Jamie: Oh boy! So you've got tohurry up and rub all the parts.Saaphyri: Exactly. I mean for allthe girls that's thinking aboutdoing something, please don'tdo it. Because if you are like meand you like to look cute andsmell good, you don't want tobe there. You're not smellinggood and you're not lookingcute.

Jamie: Were you in a cell byyourself?Saaphyri: There's two girls toeach cell when you're in thecounty jail. And they transfer inand out because some peopleare there for just a couple of days andthen they leave. Some people are there alittle bit longer. And then you get recog-nized.

Jamie: You got recognized?Saaphyri: Yeah. And then it's like you're atthe sheriff's department and, quiet as it'skept they did not like me. It's like some ofthem really loved me or they hated me.

Jamie: They didn't know you, but they rec-ognized you from the show?

. Saaphyri: Exactly.

Jamie: So what happened then?

Jamie: Who was there for you? Did youcell anybody?Saaphyri: Yeah, I did. And there was somepeople that stayed with me throughout thewhole ordeal. There was my cousin Van,and a girl from the show-they call herBuckwltd=she been, like, keeping my dogfor me like for the last two years. My otherfriend Chai. So it was between those peo-ple that I was looked out for.

Jamie: So, did you eat in your cell? Or didyou go to a cafeteria?Saaphyri: Okay, in the county jail, you eatdownstairs. It's like you eat in the little-you
