Gulf Wars 2015

By: Muriel Zimmermannin

I attended Gulf Wars this year and it was everything a war should be.

I attended a couple of classes – how to make a kosode and how to make a hakama, both of these have to do with making Japanese garb, fit to your own personal sizes.

I taught a class at war, for my first time ever. A beginner’s class on hand sewing and the students were able to make a draw string bag (sweets bag in period). I had 20 students, 7 of which were under the age of 10. The students were able to complete their project in the two hours that the class was scheduled. I really enjoyed teaching and plan to teach again at Pennsic.

I tried out a blog of sorts on Facebook, Muriel’s Musings. The signal reliability and my own personal exhaustion made daily blogging harder than I expected but I plan to do it again at Pennsic this year.

I retained for several of the royals and enjoyed it, the viewpoint of the war from the official presence on the battle field is a bit different than from the sidelines.

I was “fighter support” for the Rapier Ravine battle on Saturday morning. This is the new name given to water bearing. The experience was unique.

I think my favorite part of the war was visiting with fellow Midrealmers. The special thing about Gulf Wars is you camp with your Kingdom, as opposed to Pennsic, where you camp in your own groups, so you may go the entire time at Pennsic and not run into others from your Kingdom.

Gulf Wars is set on a ranch in Southern Mississippi and the temperature varies from low 30s to weather like this year where we saw some 90s. The cost for the event is only $67 plus other expenses so it is a very affordable vacation. The distance is about 850 miles, one way.

In closing you can find lots of pictures on Facebook of Gulf Wars from this year and I rarely think of taking photos while there
