This happened some years ago in the United States of America. Some

Indians stood at the foot of a seventy-five-foot ladder in a factory. They

were visiting important factories in the States to study their working.

Officers of the factory were with them, explaining how the factory workedIn one part Of the factory, the officer said "If you want to see how this

machine works you will have to climb to the top,"

That meant that they had to climb up the seventy-five-foot ladder, past four

    stories.

The leader of the Indians was "Very well, let us climb," he said. The others were very much surprised. He was the oldest of them all; most

of them trembled at the thought of climbing up the steel ladder.

The old gentleman briskly stepped towards the ladder, and started to

climb. Many of the others stayed back. A few followed as a matter of duty,

but some of them soon gave it up. The old gentleman reached the top, completed the inspection and briskly climbed down. Only three others

    completed the feat.

It was always so with the gentleman - anything he undertook he did

systematically and very well. No difficulty, any danger could not keep him

    back.

The Krishnarajasagara Dam - or KR or Brindavana, as it isalso called - has amazed and enchanted thousands ofvisitors from all countries. It is one of the biggest dams inIndia. It waters a hundred and twenty thousand acres ofland. It supplies electricity to hundreds of towns andvillages.

The Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works is today an asset toIndia.

The sandal oil and the sandal soap of Mysore are famous allover the world. The Mysore Sandal Oil Factory and theMysore Soap Factory export sandal oil and sandal soap tomany countries.

Mysore University is one of the oldest in India. The StateBank of Mysore (it was first named the Bank of Mysore) has

branches, not only all over Karnataka, but also in every bigcity in India.

The man who gave even one of these would deserveadmiration and gratitude.

But all these were the gifts of one man - and he gave these to his

country about fifty-five years ago, when it was still not free and

when few people here cared to study science.

This great man, this worker of miracles, this Bhagiratha of

Karnataka, this Bharata Ratna (the Gem of India) was Sri M.V.

As the Dewan of Mysore -And Ideal Administrator

Soon after Visvesvaraya became the Dewan, one of hisrelatives went to him. He was a man whom MV liked andrespected. He was in Government service. He wanted ahigher post; that would have given him another fifty rupeesa month.

    Visvesvaraya said 'No'.

But, as long as the relative was alive, he paid him a hundredrupees every month from his pocket.

As the Dewan, he got a car from the Government for hisuse. He used the Government car for government work; forhis private work he used his own car. He was such anhonest man.

The Dewan would be neatly dressed and ready for work byseven in the morning.

There was not a crease or a wrinkle anywhere on his clothes. Heworked steadily and methodically till one in the Afternoon. He wasback to work at three.

And till eight at night he was at his desk. Everything was planned, everything was done smoothly, methodically and without any hurry.Visitors who wished to see him had to write first; he would fix anhour; and the Dewan was very strict about the hour fixed. No onecould come late. And no visitor was allowed to waste time.

It is the duty of ministers to tour the state and meet the people andfind out what they need, isn't it? MV had his own way of touring adistrict. Before the visit, officers were asked to send informationabout the district. How do the farmers get water, how many tanksare there in the district, how many wells, how many hospitals andhow many schools, how many acres of land are used for agriculture- these and a hundred other questions had to be answered bydifferent departments. They had also to explain the needs of thedistrict. Then the Dewan went to the district. He held discussionswith the officers and with members of the public.

The Retired Dewan Has Not a Moment's Leisure

In 1918 Sri MV retired voluntarily. People think retirement meansrest. MV lived for 44 years after he retired from service. He was 101when he died. Except in the last few days when he was very weak,he wore himself out for the country.

From his boyhood Visvesvaraya was eager to learn new things.(When he was past one hundred, a relative was going to Madras; heasked MV, "What shall I bring you from Madras?" Said Sir MV,"Bring a good Modern English Dictionary.") As Dewan he had visitedforeign lands twice. After retirement he went abroad so manytimes, for some work or the other. Japan, America, England,Sweden, Italy, Germany, France - he toured ever so many countries.Wherever he went, he had a notebook and a pencil in his hand. He

made notes of any new information; and then - he had but onethought: how can this new knowledge help India? And when he wasback he had but one aim - to carry out the new plans. How could hefind time to think of personal matters?

Ten years after he retired from government service, floods in the Bhadra put a

stop to the work in the Steel Factory in Bhadravati. It fell to Sir MV's lot to set

things right. The General Manager of the factory, an American, said it would

take at least six months to reopen the factory. Sir MV thought the period was

too long. The officer was stubborn. Sri MV removed him. In a few days he got

    the factory going. Many officers in the factory belonged to other countries;

naturally they were not as interested in the working of the factory as Indians.

MV got a number of engineers of Mysore trained. In three years Mysoreans

took the places of the foreigners.

It was MV's dream to start an Automobiles Factory and an Aircraft Factory in

Mysore State. He worked in this direction from 1935. The Hindustan Aircraft

Factory (now called the Hindustan Aeronautics) in Bangalore, and the Premier

Automobile Factory in Bombay owe much to his efforts.

    Suppose we make a list of all that Sir MV did for the country when he was in service;

and another list of all that he did after he retired. Which list will be the longer? It is

    difficult to say.

    Sri. M.V.'s Guiding Principles

Never to use One's Official position to bestow favour on his relatives

An ounce of neatness is equal to a ton of efficiency A well dressed person does

things in a much better way than a slovenly one

That a person who is neat in his dress can be clean and straight in his life.

    Industrialise or perish

    Always work hard.

Always support a worthy cause at any cost.

    Nature never excuses Lapses.

  • 8/8/2019 Sir m Vishwesharayya

    33/36

He never tolerated slipshod work! He wanted things to be precise and not vague

He was very punctual and expected everybody to be so.

He never lost an opportunity to stimulate drive, action, alertness and hustle in

everybody who happened to meet him.

In essentials unity, In non essentials liberty, In all things charity.

Duty before comfort was his ideal

He believed in the famous maxim "Everything worth doing is worth doing well".

Five hours for nature, seven for a very busy man and nine means lazy was his

    rational budget for sleep.

Hard work performed in a disciplined manner will in most cases keep the worker

fit and also prolong his life.

Every man who has become great owes his achievements to incessant toil.

  • 8/8/2019 Sir m Vishwesharayya

    34/36

The way to build a nation is to build a good citizen. The majority of the Citizens

should be efficient of good character and posses a reasonably high sense of duty.

Leaders should be truly patriotic and should believe in rectitude of conduct, Men

of Merit and capacity should be the criteria for all special jobs and government

    appointments.

Standard of efficiency is not determined by what we wish but by what we cannottolerate

Duty before comfort was his ideal

He believed in the famous maxim "Everything worth doing is worth doing well".

Seek opportunities for service without waiting for a call.

  • 8/8/2019 Sir m Vishwesharayya

    35/36

If we are to progress we have to implicitly enforce the American methods of "

Hustle" and German methods of hard work.

Remember God helps those who help themselves.

He did not like to be under any one's obligation

He was punctual not only in keeping his engagement but also in all other respects.

The note books and pencils were his inseparable companions.

He was in a hurry, in a very great hurry to catch up with the progressive countries of

the west on at least with Japan the rising sun of the east.

Live within your income, have a purpose to give you any pleasure.

He has said that it is worth while in life to make a pleasure of duty than a duty of

    pleasure.
