Welcome from the Music Directoras we prepare to celebrate the sso’s 35th anniversary in 2014, the 2013/14 season promises a year of exciting concerts featuring the sso in collaboration with many excellent guest conductors and soloists.
Just as haydn is widely acknowledged to be the father of the symphony, richard strauss was the last of the great symphonic composers in the viennese tradition. To mark strauss’ 150th birth anniversary, the sso will dedicate four concerts in January 2014 to performing some of his most memorable compositions, including Ein Heldenleben, Symphonia domestica, the Duet-Concertino (featuring two of the sso’s principal musicians) and the deeply moving Four Last Songs.
We are also delighted to present the asian premiere of Bright sheng’s Violin Concerto, a work specially commissioned by the sso. in november 2013, the sso and singapore symphony chorus will join forces in an all-verdi extravaganza marking verdi’s birth bicentenary, as well as in a much-anticipated performance in april 2014 of one of J. s. Bach’s great masterpieces, the St John Passion. our four-year project to record the complete orchestral works by rachmaninov for the Bis label will also reach fruition during this season.
choo hoey, the sso’s founding music director, will return to conduct the sso 35th anniversary concert in 2014, and we welcome to the sso family associate conductors Jason lai and Joshua Tan, who will front many of the sso’s community outreach programmes to bring the joy of orchestral classics to new audiences.
Please join us as we embark on this exhilarating journey ahead.
Welcome from the ChairmanThe 35th anniversary of the singapore symphony orchestra will feature a season of highlights, augmented by a superb list of guest conductors and soloists. Beyond its concerts at the esplanade, the sso is also ramping up its programmes for schools and the community, in order to fulfil its broader role as singapore’s national orchestra.
When a British critic described the sso as one of the 21st century’s great orchestras in the making, we took that as a challenge, and we aim to build for singapore an orchestra that one would travel great distances to hear.
as we continue to build towards that future, we also remember the past 35 years, during which time the sso has been led by two very dedicated music directors: choo hoey, who built an orchestra from scratch; and lan shui, whose leadership since 1997 has brought the orchestra to an internationally recognised excellence. This stability is highly unusual in today’s music world, and together with the excellence and dedication of our musicians, it has been a key element for the sso’s success.
i thank all our donors and friends for the support over the years, and trust that you will all be thrilled and inspired by the concerts in our 35th anniversary season.

among the sso’s recordings under Bis are a number of cds which have earned international acclaim, including a Seascapes album and the first-ever cycle of Tcherepnin’s six piano concertos and four symphonies. since its release in may 2007, Seascapes, a compilation of sea-themed music by debussy, Frank Bridge, glazunov and Zhou long, has garnered glowing reviews in various publications including BBc music magazine and american record guide. SIMON TRPCESKI PLAYS chopin
Both of chopin’s piano concertos were composed in his late teens, under the influence of his infatuation with a fellow student in Warsaw. simon Trpceski, one of the most exciting young pianists of our time, returns to join the sso and lan shui for the E minor Concerto which was premiered by chopin himself in one of his farewell concerts before leaving Poland for good. The first half of the concert focuses on Prince Rostislav, an atmospheric and evocative tone poem based on a short ballad by Tolstoy, and composed by rachmaninov when he was just 18.

The natural successor to Brahms and Wagner, richard strauss was, in his lifetime, the most important of german composers, and continues to occupy a unique place in music history. a distinguished conductor and virtuoso orchestrator, he was also the foremost composer of symphonic poems, with masterworks such as Also Sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben and Don Juan illustrating the seemingly infinite variety of subjects to which he could turn his hand with programmatic writing. strauss was also a supreme master of german lieder, his more than 200 songs composed across more than seven decades culminating in the ravishing Four Last Songs, a most appropriate swan song for one whom many have described as having had “a life-long love affair with the soprano voice”.
The sso celebrates the 150th birth anniversary of richard strauss in January 2014 with performances of some of his greatest masterworks over four consecutive weekends.

John nelson returns to take centrestage in this concert featuring three key orchestral masterpieces. originally composed for an acquaintance from the helsinki orchestra, sibelius’ technically demanding Violin Concerto underwent a major revision before taking the familiar form in which it is known today. “Brahms’ artistic kinship with Beethoven must be plain to every observer,” the critic eduard hanslick wrote of Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 – a work which took the composer no less than 15 years to sketch, so conscious was he of Beethoven’s shadow behind him. The work proved so successful that it was referred to by many as ‘Beethoven’s Tenth’.

concerto for orchestra
The sso and Principal guest conductor okko kamu partner cellist Qin li-Wei for shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1, a masterpiece which combines dizzying virtuosity with passages of melting pathos and beauty. Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra was written after the composer’s move to america in the midst of the second World War, and its premiere in december 1944 proved to be the greatest triumph of his career. Wrote sibelius: “En Saga is psychologically one of my most profound works. i could almost say that the whole of my youth is contained within it. it is an expression of a state of mind.”

Principal guest conductor okko kamu is joined by his compatriot, clarinettist kari kriikku, in a survey of works from the early romantic period, including mozart’s much-loved Clarinet Concerto. The acclaimed swiss conductor charles dutoit makes his sso debut with his wife, canadian violinist chantal Juillet, in an evening of popular favourites including the lushly atmospheric Violin Concerto by erich korngold, better known to many for his pioneering work as a composer of film music. The story behind sergei diaghilev’s ballet Petrushka was inspired by the sawdust puppets commonly found in russian travelling fairs, and conceived as a thinly-disguised allegory of the oppression of the lower classes. ravel first wrote the music for the ballet’s premiere in 1911, later revising it as a concert suite in 1947.

New to SSO Concerts?
What should I wear?
Formal dress codes are not enforced at most concerts in singapore. on weeknights, many people come to the concerts from work in business attire, which is fine. smart casual attire is usually adequate for most concerts – which means no shorts, singlets or slippers. Formal dress can be worn to special gala events.
Late Seating
sso concerts begin promptly at 7.30pm unless otherwise stated. latecomers will not be admitted until a suitable break (which may be the intermission). Patrons who leave the hall before or during a performance cannot be reseated until the performance of that particular piece of music is over.
Can I bring my mobile phone?
Yes, but please turn off your mobile phone and other beeping devices before entering the hall, and do check again after the intermission that these are turned off. noise of any kind can be distracting to the performers and audience members.
When should I applaud?
normally, just as the concert begins, the audience applauds to greet the concertmaster when he or she comes on stage, and then again when the conductor and soloist(s) enter. after that, you may applaud at the end of each work, or when the conductor turns to you and bows, to show your appreciation. some longer works may have several sections, or movements, separated by a brief, silent pause: usually the audience applauds only at the end of the entire work. if you are unsure, check the programme to see how many movements there are. or you can always wait for the rest of the audience to clap before applauding.
Here are answers to some often-asked questions about going to SSO concerts, which will help make your next visit even more enjoyable.
