In this unmissable concert seventeen-year-old cellist Laura van der Heijden will join forces with Sinfonia Cymru to bring the searing drama of Shostakovich’s first cello concerto to life in a programme that also features Beethoven’s exuberant eighth symphony and two evocative works originally composed for the theatre stage: Sibelius’s magical suite from Pelléas et Mélisande, and the atmospheric Quiet City by Aaron Copland.

The outstanding champion of period music, Rachel Podger joins Sinfonia Cymru for a programme that showcases the Baroque period and its many guises.
On display, a combination of dazzling flamboyance and disarming simplicity. Whilst Bach and Vivaldi require little introduction, don’t underestimate the virtuosity and brilliance of their contemporaries Purcell, Fux and Telemann. Audiences back then didn’t!

Musicians from Sinfonia Cymru present their ideas on Silent Film as they perform two reimagined scores by young Welsh composer
Gareth Moorcraft to Ralph Steiner’s 1929 experimental film H20 and Joris Ivens’ Regen (“Rain”), while UnButtoned collaborator and Video Artist Chameleonic improvises a visual backdrop to Rachmaninoff’s plaintive Trio élégiaque No 1.

“Some of the best decisions are made in the pub…”
Featuring outrageous drinking competitions, bizarre selfies and some of our favourite music for string duo, trio and quartet, Sinfonia Cymru’s pub gig brings classical music to the lively surrounds of Urban Tap House, Cardiff.
