The area of the Sindhudurg diocese is 21,000 sq. kms. consisting of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts and Kolhapur district (leaving out the city of Kolhapur). It is a suffragan of Goa Diocese. The total population of the diocese is about 53,65,706 with 29,794 Catholics.

The main language of the Catholics is Konkani at home and Marathi outside.

Short History: Around 1945, Fr. Britto first came as a resident priest

at Sateli - Bhedshi. Before that there were two chapels, one at Bhedshi

and another at Sateli. Every Sunday people gathered together to recite

the rosary at Bhedshi chapel and whenever a priest came from

Sawantwadi, people gathered together at Sateli chapel, for Mass.

Short History: Originally there was a chapel under the jurisdiction of Phonoswadi parish. The Parish Priest of Phonoswadi would cater to the spiritual needs of Chinder. About 23 years back a resident priest was appointed. For some time the priests from the neighbouringparish of Masura would also help the people spiritually.

The diocese has only English medium school which has government grant in Sawantwadi. There are more than 30 % catholic students. The diocese also needs many priests thus we need to have a minor seminary where possible candidates for priesthood could also be accommodated. To serve both the purpose the diocese has planned to erect a structure.

There is also a need to have a house where the infants (boys)could find shelter. This house will serve the purpose where little boys especially those who are homeless or some reason or the other parents have left them. There will homeless women looking after them. They will be put in the convent school.

Mother Teresa School, Vengurla

The school has reached 7th std. but still we don’t have the school building. The classes are conducted in parish house for time being. The diocese has spent money in getting land for the building. There is urgent need to construct building as early as possible. The estimate cost for the building is over 2 Crore and 50 Lakhs. So far we have collected 5 Lakhs leaving aside what we have spent for purchasing land plot.

St. Anne’s School, Bachani


The school has reached to the 5th Std. Right now we have built a shed for them. Some of the classes are conducted in the church. There is urgent need to build school building. Since there is no proper structure, some people are misguiding others thus the school’s reputation is going down.
