Since its launch in 1991 over 80,000
boats have been treated with
Coppercoat®.
This hard wearing copper-filled epoxy resin provides
protection against unwanted marine hard growth
and repeatedly saves boat owners the annual task
of anti-fouling.
A single application, applied in 4 thin coats,
provides anti-fouling protection for 10+ years
before needing a touch up. If fact, the
Coppercoat® on many of the earliest coated
boats is still performing well after 20 years of
immersion.
Coppercoat® is suitable for DIY application by
roller, and since it’s non-conductive, it can be
applied (with a barrier coating, if needed) on
all surfaces, including fiberglass, wood, steel,
aluminum, cast iron and ferrocement.

For those looking to minimize maintenance costs and
extend the time between bottom painting,
Coppercoat® can provide the solution.

A Sadler Starlight 39 kept on the River Hamble was treated with Coppercoat when new in 1993. This yacht is sailed by the Editor of Europe’s biggest selling boating magazine. In 2007 she wrote “Our experience has been fantastic. In all the 14 years we’ve never had a barnacle, seaweed, nothing... except a thin layer of brown slime that simply washes off.”

Environmental
The responsible choice
Not only is Coppercoat® long lasting, it can also provide genuine performance enhancements in both speed and efficiency
That boats need protection from fouling to retain performance and efficiency is well known, but what is often forgotten is that conventional anti-fouling paints absorb water when immersed and therefore swell, roughen and increase in weight – this adds drag to the hull and decreases performance. Some racers have countered this problem by simply not using anti-fouling – they “dry sail” (leaving the hull unpainted) and only launch for the race. While this may be appropriate for a few, for most boat owners this is not a practical option. Coppercoat® provides the solution, as it is an epoxy resin and does not absorb water. By not adding drag, Coppercoat® provides the ideal combination of bare boat speed and anti-fouling protection.
This advantage has been noted by racers at all levels, from local club racers to international competitors. For example, Coppercoat® is used by Keith Musto (Olympic sailing medalist), Matt Craughwell (Guinness World Record Holder), Philippe Jeantot (Founder of the Vendee Globe Race), and all of the Clipper Round The World boats.
Power boats also enjoy performance benefits; greater boat speed and fuel savings from efficient cruising. In tests by Sunseeker (using a 25m Sunseeker Yacht 82), when compared to a new treatment of conventional anti-fouling, a new treatment of Coppercoat® improved the top speed by almost 2 knots. Similarly, when Greg Copp (technical editor at Motor-Boats and Yachting Magazine) applied Coppercoat® to his 42ft Sunseeker he noted a 2 knot improvement in top speed, and a 1 knot increase at the cruising rate of 3200 rpm. The owner of a Lagoon power cat related that the money he had saved on fuel in one summer had paid for his Coppercoat® application.
Anti-fouling companies are rightly under increasing pressure to produce coatings that are environmentally responsible as well as effective
Not only is Coppercoat® tin-free and fully compliant with all current anti-fouling legislation, including the International Maritime Organization, but the water-based epoxy technology allows the resin to be VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) free and extremely low leaching as well. Consequently Coppercoat® gives off no toxic fumes and doesn’t require toxic thinners or cleaning solutions. In fact, the thinner is Isopropyl Alcohol and water is used for cleanup, which is great for boat yards, painters and the do-it-yourselfer alike.
Coppercoat® uniquely provides lasting protection against hard fouling. With a leach rate well below the EPA maximum leach rate of 9.5 ug/cm²/day Coppercoat® complies with the requirements of even the most tightly controlled locations, such as California and the states bordering the Baltic. Consequently, a vessel treated with Coppercoat® can cruise in all the waters of the World, and given the hard-wearing longevity of the coating, the dream of circumnavigating the globe on a single application of anti-fouling is a reality.
The move towards more sustainable power sources has provided another use for Coppercoat®. Two companies (MCT and Rolls Royce) that contribute power to the UK National Grid through tide-powered generators chose Coppercoat® as the responsible and effective way to protect their equipment from fouling and to ensure maximum performance with minimal maintenance.
In Trade-a-Boat magazine the owner wrote “We’ve traveled 40,000 nautical miles on the first application of Coppercoat over a period of 12 years. The protection the product has provided is unparalleled both for anti-fouling and osmosis protection. Only minimal hull maintenance and cleaning has been done over the last 12 years, including a few scrubs in the water.” Co and Carla Zwetsloot

Coppercoat® is great for commercial
boats, where minimizing “down time” is important.
Conventional anti-fouling paints
wear off quickly on high usage
boats, leading to frequent and
expensive haul-outs and
re-paints.
Hard-wearing Coppercoat®
gives longer service intervals,
allowing vessels to stay in-
water and working, with
obvious economic benefits.

“Our confidence in Coppercoat has been
rewarded,” says Sir Robin Knox-Johnston,
Clipper Race Chairman. “Across the fleet of
Clipper 70s, the coating withstood the
rigorous conditions of a 40,000NM
circumnavigation, and following the Clipper
2017-18 Race remains in near-perfect
condition. “
The 2019-2020 Clipper was raced on the
same applications of Coppercoat, and
Coppercoat has already been chosen as a
sponsor of The 2021-2022 Clipper Round
The World Race. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston is the
