Mega Bucks For green & DtF Way ta Fire in JacksonBy tanya Randall Team Talmadge continued its win streak when leader Talmadge Green topped the Mega in Jackson, Miss., for an $8,000 payday aboard DTF Way Ta Fire (“Fireball”). “There was a lot riding on this weekend,” said Green, who com-peted as well as produced the event. “I set my goals at the begin-ning of the year. I picked six of the major shows that I wanted us—the kids and I—to win. Going into this, we were four for four. We won the Diamonds & Dirt, BBR Finals, All American Youth and (NBHA) Teen World. I told Allie (Chouest) going into the finals, we had our best horses coming back and that all we needed was a little luck.” Chouest had the fastest qualifying run, winning the second round with VF A Sporty Design. Unfortunately, the past Mega Champion drew poorly for the finals, while the other horse did. “Sporty didn’t draw really well; he was fifth right after a big drag,” noted Green. “As big as he is, sometimes he can bury up. I told Al-lie the two palominos had the best draw.” Chouest and her palomino stallion Briscoscangetit drew 146, while Green was 226 on Fireball. Chouest almost got the event title with her biggest gun, RLJ High Intedsity (“Slick”), but he stepped in on the third barrel and bowed off the back side as a result. They finished third. Green was also extremely pleased with Chouest’s performance. “Even though she didn’t win it this time, she did have the fastest time with Sporty in the second go,” he said. “She rode so good; she’s ridden great all year. She had total control of her horses. She put them wherever she needed to put them.” It was up to Green to keep the streak alive with Fireball, whom qualified in the first round out of the money in 15th in the 1D and rested in the second round. Their winning run wasn’t without its own tense moments as Green reached down to save the second barrel. “I actually had been wanting to change bits on him really bad,” Green admitted. “The one I rode when I won the (NBHA) World and set the arena record (at the JB Quarter Horses Futurity) in Waco, I’ve always felt like it was a little longer shank than he needed. It had a twisted mouthpiece with a little dog bone in it. The right side of it I wrapped (with bit tape) to make it softer. This weekend I made the change. I went from a 6-inch shank to a 5-inch with a total smooth mouthpiece. I think the bit had a lot to do with it. You could just feel how he responded much better. If the ground held him and you needed to pull on him a little bit more, he responded to it much better than with the twist.” Fireball, a 6-year-old gelding by the late leading sire Chasin Fire-water out of DTF Way To Go, by Dash Ta Fame, now has earnings

in excess of $200,000. “Fireball is steadily growing more confident,” said Green. “I told Dino (Chouest, the horse’s owner) that I can’t imagine what he’ll be like when he’s about 9 or 10, which will be about right because Allie’s got three more years before we go rodeo. He’ll mature more. He really doesn’t try to do wrong; he just tries too hard sometimes. “I’ve got the full sister and a three-quarter brother to him that I’m getting ready for next year. The sister is nice, but the three-quarter brother is so much like him it’s pathetic. He’s like a deer.” The only victory remaining on Green’s 2015 to-do list is the NBHA Open World. “You set your goals to make yourself work harder,” he said, “but it’s been just an amazing year with what we’ve accomplished so far.” Other than capturing an NBHA Open World title, the only thing on Green’s agenda is qualifying for as many spots as they can to the Semifinals of RFD-Tv’s The American. Chouest already has two horses qualified, Green has one as does Destri Davenport. The goal for Green and Davenport is to qualify at least one more horse a piece. “Now, I’m going to try to go to the American and stay on the horse,” laughed Green, one of the richest and most decorated bar-rel racers in history. “First year, I went out the back of the saddle

Pays More than $2,000,000 For the third straight year, the world’s richest one-day rodeo will return to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. RFD-TV’s THE AMERICAN, presented by Polaris RANGER on Feb. 28, 2016, together with The American Semi-Finals, Feb. 17-21 in Fort Worth, will be televised live and offer a cash-and-prize purse of more than $2.5 million. THE AMERICAN invites the top 10 rodeo athletes in the world in seven events to compete for a $1 million purse in the home of the Dallas Cowboys. Anyone can qualify via the Semi-Finals – which last year paid out a half-million dollars – and any contestant who advances to THE AMERICAN and out-rides or out-ropes the sport’s elite stars is eligible for an additional $1 million bonus on Feb. 28. At the inaugural event in 2014, bareback rider Richmond Cham-pion took home $1.1 million for two eight-second rides. The star-studded field of hopeful qualifiers that first year included dozens of world champions and several athletes who came out of retirement specifically to compete, including two-time PBR world champion Justin McBride and 11-time barrel racing world champ Charmayne James. A highlight for fans was the remarkable performance of 70-year-old barrel racer June Holeman. “We’re building exposure and creating a platform for these tre-mendous athletes, but at the same time, it’s the surprising underdogs who seem to be capturing the hearts of rodeo fans,” said Randy Bernard, CEO of RFD-TV Events. Last year, 9-year-old Chayni Chamberlain advanced all the way into contention for a million-dollar-win, and fans were bowled over by the determination of paraplegic barrel racer Amberley Snyder. In addition, three remarkable contestants – Lisa Lockhart, Wade Sundell and Kaleb Driggers – repeated their 2014 championships at THE AMERICAN to each pick up a check for $100,000 two years running. Bernard will discuss the third edition of THE AMERICAN live on RFD-TV at 9 p.m. (ET) Wednesday, Aug. 19.“I knew this rodeo had tremendous potential, but in two short years, THE AMERICAN has grown faster than any sporting event I’ve been associated with,” Bernard said. “Together with our great sponsors, RFD-TV is excited to again showcase the best rodeo athletes in the world and give them a chance to make the kind of money they would make in any other professional sport.” Polaris RANGER will mark its third year as the presenting spon-sor of THE AMERICAN. “We’re proud to be continuing our partnership with RFD-TV’s THE AMERICAN,” said Beth Shimanski, marketing manager of off-road vehicles for Polaris. “This unique rodeo format has brought excitement to the rodeo community and we are thrilled to be back as a part of the event.”

At the 2016 AMERICAN, fans can expect to see today’s most spectacular stock matched against rodeo and bull-riding superstars including world champions J.B. Mauney, Trevor Brazile, Silvano Alves, Kaycee Feild and Clay O’Brien Cooper. THE AMERICAN will again coincide with the PBR’s Iron Cow-boy, scheduled for Feb. 27, 2016, in AT&T Stadium. The second PBR Major of the 2016 Built Ford Tough Series features the top 40 stars of the PBR riding the sport’s rankest bulls until one cowboy prevails – hence the name “iron cowboy.” Together, THE AMERI-CAN and Iron Cowboy constitute the richest weekend in Western sports, which is expected to draw more than 100,000 fans to North Texas. There are three ways to qualify for competition in THE AMERI-CAN. The top 10 contestants in the world receive automatic invitations. Additionally, a handful of exemptions are offered to the brightest rising stars and retired Hall-of-Famers in the sport. And finally, hopeful contestants can pay an entry fee to compete at “qualifiers” throughout the year sanctioned by Better Barrel Races, Professional Bull Riders, Professional Rough Stock Series, Ultimate Calf Roping and United States Team Roping Championships. Last year, nearly 4,000 entries were fielded at 70 qualifying events for the half-million-dollar American Semi-Finals in Fort Worth, where nearly 600 athletes from around the world battled for 38 byes into THE AMERICAN. Tickets for THE AMERICAN and Iron Cowboy go on sale to the general public on Friday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. (CT) and range in price from $20 to $152. By Hope sickler If you have Jolene Montgomery piloting your horses, you are pretty much destined to win and last weekend was no exception for owner Kimi Nichols. Montgomery won the Triangle Cross Futurity held in McCook, Nebraska aboard Nichols’ mare KN Born This Way, a 4-year-old buckskin mare by Born Ta Be Famous and out of Kczartessa by Streakin Dash. “She has been my favorite horse to ride all year. She is super willing and quite the pleaser. It was a long run to the first barrel in McCook, so on her first run, I checked her a little early for her first barrel causing her to get in real tight, consequently causing her to bow off of the turn to leave it upright. We missed our second barrel by about a stride due to that but she never quit trying during that entire run. Our second run was much smoother and the clock reflected that,” explained Montgomery. With a time of 15.484 in the first round and a smokin’ 15.143 the second round, the duo’s total time on two of 30.627 was spot on for the average win and overall futurity championship and a check for $3,723. “We won some awesome prizes and I am very thankful to Triangle Cross and all the other futurity sponsors including my per-sonal sponsors as well. Without any of them, none of this would be possible!”

By tanya Randall The inaugural Myers Ranch/Copper Spring Ranch Performance Horse Sale, held August 22 at the picturesque Copper Spring Ranch in Bozeman, Montana, was the richest barrel horse sale on record. Receipts totaled nearly $1.5 million with 54 of the 61 cataloged horses changing hands for a $27,306 average. Horses were sold to 18 states and Canada. Luckily the smoke from nearby forest fires drifted out of the area and the only thing scorching was the bidding. Event hosts Klein and Karen Gilhousen’s Prime Talent sired the high seller—Explosive Talent. A 2-year-old buckskin mare out of Blondies Dy Na Mite, by Dealing An Ace out of an Oklahoma Fuel mare, Explosive Talent sold to the Cok family of Montana for $100,000. Copper Spring second high-seller was the 2-year-old bay geld-ing Take Me Ta Fame. By all-time leading barrel horse sire Dash Ta Fame out of the Frenchmans Guy mare Betta Takemeserious, a full sister to BFA World Futurity Champion, Guys Cash Perks. The gelding sold to the Hatch Family of Florida for $48,000. Rounding out the top three sellers for Copper Spring were a pair of $42,000 purchases: PT Bomber and Kissme Frenchman. Sired by Prime Talent, a three-time stakes winner by leading racehorse sire Corona Cartel out of a Coup De Kas (TB) mare, PT Bomber is a 2-year-old bay roan mare of Dy Na Mite Fling, by leading barrel horse sire A Streak Of Fling. Dy Na Mite Fling is a maternal half-sister to high seller Explosive Talent. The filly sold to Wilson of Alberta, Canada. Kissme Frenchman, a yearling buckskin mare, is by all-time lead-ing living barrel horse sire Frenchmans Guy out of Prime Time Mary, a daughter of Prime Talent out of a Streakin La Jolla daugh-ter. She sold to Hommertzheim’s of Kansas. Overall, Copper Spring Ranch’s consignments averaged $22,720 with the Prime Talent 2-year-olds averaging $21,036. Bill and Deb Myers’ storied program delivered another outstand-ing set of prospects with an overall average of $30,946. French-mans Guy 2-year-olds averaged $41,714, while A Smooth Guy’s averaged $34,700 and the Cowboy Cartels averaged $30,250. Guyz Smooth Amber, a three-quarter sister to Tami Semas’ 2015 futurity standout Guys Amberetto, led the Myers’ contention. The 2-year-old bay mare by A Smooth Guy out of Amber Holland, by Holland Ease, sold for $56,000 to LaToush from Kansas. Cowboys Cartel had the second high-seller for the Myers, with Cowgirls Luv Cowboys selling for $54,000 to the Howes Family in Alberta, Canada. The 2-year-old bay mare is out of the Paddys Irish Whiskey mare Paddys Irish O Lena, who is from the same female family as Racheal Myllymaki’s NFR horse Easy Does It Doc. With her equine part-ner struggling last year at this time, Wall and TKW Bullys Famous Fox “Foxy” did not make it past the qualifying round. However, this year was a bit of a different story. With a 17.49 in the first round and a 17.22 in the second round, Wall and “Foxy” found themselves making the short round at Caldwell this year. “My husband, Travis, and I raised and trained Foxy. She placed at some futurities and pro rodeos when she was 5-years-old and then last season, she finished 20th in the WPRA World Standings and was the runner-up in the Rookie Standings. I think that was pretty outstanding for a 6-year-old. She just keeps getting better and better with age and more runs,” Wall said. The now 7-year-old bay mare has carried Wall to some big checks, including their latest large chunk of change which they picked up at Caldwell. “We had a nice, solid run in the first round. We ran a 17.49 which was just out of the money. After the first round, I knew that all I needed to do was make another run like that one and we would be sitting good in the average.” Improving their time over two-tenths of a second, a 17.22 was posted as their time in the second round which was good enough for third place in the round. “Our second run was a beautiful run. She fired and did every-thing perfect,” explained Wall. With each run, “Foxy” and Wall kept getting faster, posting the fastest time of the rodeo in the short round with a blistering 17.12 seconds! “Our third run was outstanding. She amazes me and has gotten so solid this year. She is really maturing and it has been such a fun

ride. I am very excited to see where she takes me in my barrel racing career.” With a total of 51.83 seconds on three runs, Wall secured the championship at this year’s Caldwell Night Rodeo, along with a stunning pair of engraved spurs given by the committee. “I feel like we redeemed ourselves from last year at Caldwell and

By Hope sickler Kelsey Lutjen and TS Hayday Returns have literally been domi-nating every futurity that they enter this year. With a total time of 29.766 on two, they are the 22nd Annual Barrel Of Gold Futurity Champions. “She is super solid and all business. She was literally made to run barrels and be good at it. She is probably the smallest horse at these futurities but her grit is what brings her to the top,” explained Lutjen. Running a 14.862 in the first round, they outran the rest of the field of futurity horses by over 2-tenths of a second! That time also held for third in the open and second in the WPRA Sidepot. “We got by the first barrel in the second round which was mostly my fault because I just needed to keep the barrels standing, but she is so gritty that she runs harder if she goes by one and turns the second two even faster and tighter.” Winning second in the second round with a 14.904, Lutjen and the gritty 5-year-old PC Frenchmans Hayday daughter out of Fair Returns took home the futurity championship and won $4,367 over the weekend. TS Hayday Returns is now up to over $35,000 lifetime earnings.

Our Bible is a book of victory. In it is everything we need to get through this life in the smoothest way. In it is direc-tion, healing and prosperity. When we spend time reading

God’s Word and then OBEYING and PRACTICING what we read, the bumps in life level out. Phil. 4:9 says, “the things which you learned….received….heard…..saw…do these and the God of peace will be with you.” I find when a problem arises, there is still a tendency in me to do only a part of what God says…..to substitute. And I’ll say, “Ya, I know….but.” However I’m endeavoring to do things 100% His way and I’m seeing things work out better. I think pride creeps in and we start thinking, “I’VE got this God.” So….we bought a Kawasaki mule for chores around here…and we have an 11 year old grandson that LOVES to drive it. Ever vigilant with him, I remind him that when he stops to ALWAYS put on the emergency brake so it doesn’t accidently roll off. I think I’ve said to him TWICE, “Cody, it’s always best to put on the brake just to be safe”. He’s one of those really good kids and he listens to me. One day we were working around here and he was doing all the

driving. He’d stop, put on the brake, unload the little dump trailer and away we’d go. Ahh, but one of the trips, I drove for some reason. We loaded it up and to the garbage we went. I jumped out, dumped and Cody said with a serious straight face…..”Grandma, it’s always best to put on the brake just to be safe”. Do you think God didn’t use that to remind me how important it is to follow His direction? Of course He did. Though nothing bad happened, I was doing a little substituting right there and I needed to sharpen up! Let’s don’t look back one day and wish we had done it God’s way…the safe way….the right way!
