f ro m t he R AB BI ’S PE Nfrom the RABBI ’S PEN

In Annie Dillard’s book “For the Time Being,” she tells the story of aBritish district officer named James Taylor in highland New Guinea, nowPapua New Guinea. In the 1930s, Taylor made contact with a mountainvillage perched at 3,000 feet above sea level, whose tribe had neverseen a trace of the outside world. One day, on the airstrip hacked fromthe mountains near his village, one villager cut vines and lashed himselfto the fuselage of Taylor’s airplane shortly before it took off. Heexplained calmly to his loved ones that, no matter what happened tohim, he had to see where it came from.

That astonishing courage arises from the deep human need to under-stand, to follow the thread back to the beginning, to discover andexplore. Living in the world is not enough; we share a hunger to decipherits mysteries.

In the modern world tremendous efforts are devoted to the mysteries of existence: the genome, astrono-my, the entire enterprise of natural science. Still mystery abides and we will always seek to know more thanwe do know.

The courage of curiosity can lead both to self-sacrifice and to survival. According to writer and chroniclerMaurice Samuel, this is the secret of the survival of the Jewish people. Early on, said Samuel, the Jews sim-ply decided they were not going to disappear until they had this thing figured out. Strapped to themetaphorical fuselage, we are still here, seeking to understand.

Dear Friends,

For the first time in many years, Sinai Temple is commemorating Yom HaZikaron in asimilar fashion to what occurs in the land of Israel.

On May 9th, at 7:30pm, we will hear the stories of fallen Israeli soldiers and learndirectly from soldier, Sergeant Benjamin Anthony.

Our USYers and Nazarian fellows will light memorial candles and pay tribute to themen and women who continue to fight for our homeland. Just as is tradition in Israel, with the musical talents of Cantors Gole and Brown, Aryell Cohen, musician JustinStein, and our Sinai Akiba Academy Middle School we will transition from memorial toan evening of celebration.

Yom HaAzmaut is Israel’s Day of Independence. Helping us learn why Israel matters,Major Roy Levy is flying in from Israel to remind us why and how we are connected to our holy land. Sinai Temple isdedicated to the land of Israel. This is our chance to show our loyalty through our collective voices. I encourage you toattend this moving evening to help memorialize those who fight for us and celebrate the independence of the state ofIsrael.

See you on May 9th!

we spend the weekend at camp with comfortable rooms, deliciousfood, and expansive recreation facilities.

At fifteen years of age, it is difficult to imagine the devastating magnitude of the

Holocaust tragedy and to understand the silence and indifference that perpetuated

throughout the world at the time. A couple of years ago, I had the privilege of visiting

the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, Yad Vashem. The names on the walls, memora-

bilia and the photo’s through out the museum allowed me to visualize and internalize

the event. It is one thing to read and gaze through all the horrific photos in the muse-

ums; however meeting the people behind this heartbreaking catastrophe for humani-

ty is more profound. On January 23, 2011, my fellow SiHi peers and I were given the

honor to enjoy breakfast with holocaust survivors and their families.

This was perhaps the most humbling experience I have ever been a part of.

The event started off with conversational icebreakers, and student performances.

Everyone was so genuine and willing to share their stories, and there was so much to

say and share. I embraced every story as I felt the responsibility to pass it on. No one

should forget, never again.

Thinking about these events can help young people develop awareness and accept

diversity. We need to explore the dangers of remaining silent, and indifferent in the

face of the oppression of others. So I vow on May 1st, Yom Hashoah, to light a candle

and to pass on the stories of the survivors, so history will not repeat itself; and I

encourage you all to do the same.
