Limited national growth. Nationwide job openings increased 7.7% from August, with a

93.2% year-over-year improvement from last September. The increase weve seen is due

largely to seasonal hiring, explained Gautam Godhwani, CEO of SimplyHired.com. While

unemployment is reported to be higher than expected, this 7.7% growth indicates that

there are certain types of jobs available. Recovery from the recession is slow, but we are

    seeing a steady upward movement.

Healthcare and legal job opportunities. Healthcare and legal job openings are substantial

despite little or no industry growth. While the healthcare industry posted only a 3.4%

increase, hospitals were top employers across all 25 major metros. The legal industry

posted a -4.8% decrease in jobs, but legal occupations grew by 18.6%, indicating that there

is a demand for legal workers outside of law firms.

Increase in finance hiring. Job openings for financial specialists and accountants increased

by 53.7% from last month. This uptick coincides with the traditional fall recruiting season

for major banks, accounting, consulting and investing firms.

Healthy job market in Boston. Of the four least competitive job markets, Boston was the

only one that also had substantial job growth for the month (11.1%), making it overall one of

the best places for job seekers. The other three least competitive metros all had less than5% job growth.

    Employment Impact: Seasonal Hiring

Huge increase in demand for retail workers. Job openings for retail salespersons

went up 104.1% between August and September. This doubling of jobs is a sign of early

seasonal hiring, as retail stores prepare for increased business over the holiday season

    (October through January).

Department stores ramping up hiring. While there were no department or clothing

stores in this months Top Hiring Companies, Nationwide, several have begun to expand

their workforce. JC Penney had a 7.12% month-over-month increase to 1,610 job openings,

and Sears had a 30.49% increase to 1,070 job openings. More retail companies should

demonstrate similar upticks in the coming months.

    Local Market Outlook

    HIGHLIGHTS

Recovering local economies. Of the 50 most populous metros, Detroit (17.1%) and New Orleans

(16.0%) posted the highest monthly job growth, reflecting a gradual recovery from the distressed

automotive industry and Hurricane Katrina, respectively. Despite this, Detroit is still the most

competitive job market, with six unemployed persons for every job opening.

Best and worst job markets. Baltimore, Boston, Washington, D.C. and West Palm Beach are the

least competitive metros, each with a 1:1 unemployment ratio. Major metros in California and

Florida are some of the most competitive, with 4-6 unemployed persons for every job opening.

    HIGHLIGHTS

Sharp decrease in agriculture hiring. As winter nears, job openings in the agriculture industry are

down 25.7% from August. A correspondingly sharp increase generally occurs in May and June as

    a result of seasonal hiring.

Increased demand for legal workers. Up 18.6%, legal occupations had the third largest growth in

September, after retail (104.1%) and financial (53.7%) jobs. The increase in legal hiring marks the

beginning of an expansion expected to continue through year end.
