U.S. Employment Trends Report| February 2011 Simply Hired, Inc. |1
Slight increase in nationwide hiring. Hiring across the nation continued its slow start in the
second month of the year. Job openings increased 3.8% from January 2011, with a year-
over-year improvement of 49.7% from February 2010. The rate of change for job openings
is starting to stabilize, noted Gautam Godhwani, CEO of SimplyHired.com. While theres
still a way to go, this means that we are steadily closing the gap between todays job market
and pre-recession numbers.
Slow growth in large metros. Five of the most populous metro areas posted very minimal
growth in comparison to smaller metros. Both New York and the SF Bay Area had slight
decreases in job openings (-0.9% and -1.5%), while Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia
each had less than 3% (2.7%, 2.5% and 0.1%, respectively). Cleveland & Akron had the
largest monthly growth, at 11.5%.
Growth in most industries. 17 of 18 industries had positive increases in job openings, with
only the Technology industry taking a slight dip of -2.0%. Several industries had substantial
growth in February, with Military (22.7%), Travel (20.9%) and Agriculture (20.0%) leading
in increases.
Military hiring picks up. Military industry hiring increased 22.7%, a growth reflected in
both occupation and employer data: job openings for military personnel increased 10.6%month-over-month, while the US Air Force ranked fifth in the Top Hiring Companies,
Nationwide list with 10,528 openings.
Trends Report Update: Methodology
In a continuous effort to improve the quality of our trends data, Simply Hired has
updated its methodology for calculating several components of the US Employment
Trends Report. As of February 2011, the following sections will reflect the updated
methodology:
(1) Job competition, nationwide and by metro
(2) Employer rankings, nationwide and by metro
Changes in the data that are solely the result of the new methodology have been noted
and are not included in any written analyses of employment trends found in this report.

openings. The parallel growth indicates that a substantial portion of the Farmers, Fishers and
Forestry job openings is specifically for farmers.
