A review of some methods on d iscrete limit ana lysis, namely base d on the control of shear and compres sive stren gth, out -of-p lane and axial stabili ty of masonry walls, is carri ed out. A case stud y of an old masonry build ing is presented. An in dividual a ssessment of each structural eleme nt is carried out, both in terms of out-of-plane and in-plane shear stabili ty of walls. The collapse mechanisms m ost likely to occ ur, given the extensive ex perience on seismic beha viour and se ismic damage, are compared wi th those provided by the re sults of the analysis of the bui lding, and the di fferences observed are discu ssed. The advantages of simplified assessment methodologies, if well calibrated and tested, are reliable expedite approaches for old masonry bu ildings, esse ntial in routine inspections orafter the occurrence of a seismic event. Simple software tools may support the asses smen t actions.
