story aspect make a difference? Cant you see

yourself in some of these scenes? This story

represented a major turning-point for this man.

Now he could start to be himself, and in doing

that, however faltering the steps, he started to nd

peace. When I was with him, we talked about his story

a lot, and throughout the whole discussion I began

to realize that each of us also has a story to tell.

Our lives are our stories. Each story is different

because each life is different. There is nothing

good or bad about stories; they are just different.

Some are tragic, some happy, some so-so. But the

story for each of us is real. I felt also that perhaps

some people seem boring to us because no one has

really listened to their story. We have a need to tell

our story, and we will sound like a broken record until

someone really listens to the story. It is at that point

that we feel accepted, that we realize our story is notbizarre, which implies, of course, that we are not

bizarre, and we can now move on.

LIFE AS STORY

Ive come to see that we grow through story. Rathe

listened to. When we listen to anothers story, w

allow room inside us for another person, and th

because it says that if I cant nd peace in my ow

heart because my story is so turbulent, then, when yo

listen to me, I find the peace that is so required fo

healing in story because your heart has room an

acceptance.

We cannot grow, therefore, if were not listened to.

E

veryone loves stories. One of the great

things to do for children on the way home

from vacation, when everyone is tired, the

weather is hot, trafc is heavy, and the children arepossibly restless, is to tell them a story. Read to

them. The child in you and in me likes to hear stories

too, especially when we are also under stress.

STORY

The idea of story is central to human life since time

began. There is something about a story that enriches

and gives life. Story describes very signicant things

for us; we become mesmerized by stories; we listen

to stories because we recognize ourselves in stories.

Allow menow to tell you a true story.

A TRUE STORY

Once upon a time there was a man who felt totally lost. As

he described it, he didnt know which end was up. He was

supposed to know, or at least, thats what they told him.

He travelled for years, trying to nd some intelligent

answers to his searching. Each turn in the road and each

person seemed to be saying to him: If you will do this, or

become that, you will be happy. And he tried all these

doings, and all these becomings, but he was still not

happy. Somehow he felt empty, a shell. There was a pro-

found agony inside, a restlessness too intense for words.

And the more that he tried to be what they wanted him tobecome and do, the more crises he experienced. How he

longed to be happy. He didnt know it then, but he had

traded happiness for doing it their way. He got older,

gained education and experience, but still the restless crav-

ing would not stop. When all the avenues for help offered

minimal or no assistance, he was told of a wise woman

who would cure this ache for him. He would not be sick

any more.

So off he set to nd this woman, and when he did nd her, shedumped all over him for being the way he was and told

him that his life was so tragic that years would be needed

under her direction to get well! He pulled himself away

from that person, hung on to the parts of him that were all over

the ground, crawled into his car, drove away. Still in the front

seat of his car, in the no-mans land of a California freeway,

he pulled over to a rest area. He had driven for only a few short

miles; he was barely able to see through the tears streaming

down his face.

In the rest area, tears continued to pour down as in

buckets. When his sorrow and tears had sufciently ex-

hausted themselves, he fell asleep right there; and when heawoke, it was still very early in the morning. The dew and

mist were parting to let the days new sun look upon the

earth. In a moment of clarity, a voice told him, Its better to

nurture the light than to try to dispel the darkness.

He saw his whole life changing, and the ways and

reasons for his searching. No longer would he be trying to

get rid of something (pain) to nd his path; instead, he

would love the light, however small, and be faithful to that.

He knew the light would always be there; he just had to

look. He turned on the car, put the car in gear, and drove

out on to the freeway of living where his devotion to the

light carries him through, even to this day.

THE REALNESS OF STORY

The above narrative is a modified account of a

mans story that I heard one time. Doesnt the
