•Sustained investments in agriculture in Romania and Bulgaria has lead to spectacular increase of exports

•Port of Constanta - the most significant port of Europe for agri-bulk transit

•Agriculture exports can lead to an enhanced containerised traffic due to vertical investments in agriculture

Driver Impact on the Black Sea

Geopolitics

•The events in Ukraine have restricted short sea shipping, affecting also intercontinental traffic

•The events in Ukraine are encouraging the imports of gas from Western Asia (Caspian Sea region) through Romanian or Bulgarian sea ports

Energy market

•Black Sea’s energy market is affected by the following factors: the fluctuations on the oil & gas markets, the new strategies of the EU regarding the energy supplies for the internal use, the replacing of old coal plants with new gas plants and the introduction of gas as main fuel for river transport

•Gas fields have been discovered in the Black Sea, increasing the offshore activities in some of the neighbouring ports

Driver Impact on the Black Sea

Transport & supply chains

• The containerised intercontinental flows will remain diverted through the Central and Eastern Mediterranean hubs, who will feeder the main Black Sea ports

•Significant improvements could be registered on the agri-bulk market due to investments made by the big players of industry in the port of Constanta (Far-East markets are targeted)

Port related industries

•Container overcapacity in the Black Sea Basin and this trend is expected to continue, having in view the feeder status of the region

•Offshore industries are expected to grow due to discoveries of gas reserves in the Black Sea

•Agri-bulk processing activities are expected to grow in the port of Constanta, based on concentration of this type of cargo in the port

Competitive position

•Main competitor region for the Black Sea on the intercontinental flows is the Adriatic (containerized and general cargoes)

• It is expected that on midterm this competition will grow due to infrastructural investments on the hinterland linking the Black Sea ports with the EU hinterland
