Hafa Adai SIM Members,To start the New Year, we held our first business meeting at

the new venue Papas Restaurant located in airport road.

The beautiful establishment has been very accommodatingas it is only open during lunch hours for our SIM meetings. Special thanks to

the General Manager Frank Toves for being a true friend of SIM. We reallyappreciate your support throughout the years.

January brought us our 11th annual Wine, Dine, Bid & Win Silent Auction

Event. The food was wonderful, the prizes were fantastic and the 80s music

brought back so much memories. Im pretty sure that the Marriotts ballroom still

has a hole on the carpet floor from my dancing shoes.

In February, we held our 28th Charter Celebration at the Sheraton Laguna

Resort & Spa. SIM has worked so hard to continue helping women and girls onour island to reclaim their dreams through the Womens Opportunity Awards(WOA) program, Violet Richardson Award (VRA) and ourSIM Scholarship

Program for women attending the University of Guam, Guam Community

College and Pacific Islands University. In addition, the Ruby Award was

presented to a very special woman who has dedicated her time and efforts toimprove the lives of women and girls through her professional and/or volunteer

    work.

So I continue to challenge you, my fellow Soroptimists to become involved. Notjust in your donations, but to passionately share your talent and skills through

extended service. We are already off to a great start by inducting 2 newmembers during our charter celebration. I encourage everyone to continue tobring one person to a meeting each month and to live a life of service, chair an

event, or participate in a committee whether it is in Programs, Fundraising,

Public Awareness, or Membership.Jessica Castro, 2013-2014 SIM President

    January Program Meeting

On the island of Guam, many women are homeless or addicted to substanceabuse with little to no hope of ever rising above their circumstances. Withunemployment on the rise, these women are drastically limited in theiropportunities to provide for themselves and their children. Without options, manyturn to drugs, alcohol and prostitution to escape the reality of their lives.

Oasis Empowerment Center exists to help these women experience freedomfrom their life controlling addictions. A team of caring staff and volunteersprovides the counseling and training that they need to find inner healing, break thechains of addiction and give them practical job skills with which they can liveindependently.

Guest Speaker Holly Rustick discussed the growing scope of Oasis programs that

are woven together to Inspire Success-filled Living for the women and familieson Guam. She also discussed the new Dream Project, funded by the

Administration for Native Americans Social and Economic DevelopmentStrategies grant, to provide workforce and micro-enterprise training and start-upgrants for women in need on Guam.
