WE ARE CLOSING ON THE 5TH FRIDAY

In order to allow our amazing cooks the opportunity

to have holidays off, we are se'ng a scheduled

quarterly closure to allow them to deep clean the

kitchen. This closure will also allow the staff the

opportunity to catch up on their paperwork and do

scheduled maintenance throughout the building.

We are calling these days Fabulous Fi%h Fridays!

Each month that has five Fridays will have a

scheduled closing on that last Friday.

We hope that this won’t inconvenience you.

Thanks so much for your understanding.

Have you ever

forgo$en to sign up

for tomorrow’s lunch

and wished there was

a way that you could

sign up from home?

Thanks to technology,

you can sign in on

your home computer,

tablet or phone and

register for future

lunches.

You must be registered with the Senior Center and

A simple change to the way that you shop

amazon.com can result in great cash

dona!ons to the Senior Center through our

501C3 organiza!on Box Elder Golden Spike

Senior Services (BEGSSS). The next !me you

head over to amazon.com to shop, change

your address to smile.amazon.com. Your

shopping experience will be the same as your

usual shopping at amazon.com except the

products that you purchase will be marked

“Eligible for AmazonSmile dona!on” on the

product detail page. The first !me that you

go to smile.amazon.com, you will need to

select your charitable organiza!on. Where

you are asked to “select your charitable

organiza!on” select Box Elder Golden Spike

Senior Services. There is no extra charge to

you to generate this extra revenue. Amazon

will donate .5% of your eligible purchases to

BEGSSS. BEGSSS in turn uses these monies to

support the many programs and ac!vi!es

that happen at the Senior Center. Ques!ons?

See Nancy or Tammy

Earn money for us by shopping at Smith’s.

Before your next shopping trip to Smith’s, go

online and get yourself enrolled in Smith’s

Community Rewards. This will send a percentage

of your purchases into the account that we have

established for the Senior Center. So far, we have

deposited about $100. Create your account by

visi!ng the website at

www.smithsfoodanddrug.com. If you haven’t

created an account, click on “register”. If you

already have an account, sign in. Once your

account has been created, you will need to add

your Smith’s Rewards Card to your account. The

next step is to make sure that your personal

informa!on is correct under the “Accounts

Summary” page. Your next step is to click on the

Surprises in Food Labels From March 2017 issue of Harvard Health Watch

Does the word “healthy” on a food label draw you to a food? As we try to preserve this body of ours, we

look for the words that give a hope that we are choosing wisely. There are many fast type foods around and we

want to choose those foods that are healthier than others.

These days you are wise to read beyond that front-of-the-package claims to determine the quality of the

food you are choosing. “Healthy” food claims on boxes, soups, sauces, cereal, canned, bo$led or bagged foods

many not be the best choices.

“Healthy” became popular years ago when we became focused on the type of foods we were ea!ng to

prevent heart disease and to limit the sodium to reduce out blood pressure. In the 90’s FDA determined that

the word “healthy” could be used when a food contained less than a specific amount of fat or sodium per serv-

ing.

Since that !me, research has determined that diets rich in unsaturated fats—found in nuts, seeds, and

fish—may actually reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Refined carbohydrates are o"en add-

ed to low fat foods to enrich their flavor. It was determined in the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans

that limits be placed only on trans and saturated fats (to 10% of calories), added sugars (to 10% of calories),

and sodium (to 2300 gms per day). The old defini!on for “healthy” is out of date and could lead us in the wrong

direc!on. In September of 2016, FDA reported it was changing the defini!on of this word.

What about the word “natural”? There is no defini!on for this word by the FDA.

Beware!! FDA has stated it would also clarify the defini!on of this word in our

food. These changes may take !me to get into the system a"er public comments

and companies are required to use these new defini!ons.

So what do we do in the mean !me?

Trust but verify the terms on the front of the package with the Nutri!onal Facts

on the back of the package. Check for calories from sugar and a list of the added

ingredients on natural food products.

Do the math according to what you actually eat as compared with the serving

size listed on the package.

Minimize packaged foods when possible to be assured you are ea!ng for good

health. You will probably get be$er flavor this way also.

FRAUD ALERT! Apparently there is a revival of a scam with a person or persons disguised as u!lity workers.

Their mo!ve is to get inside your home to perpetrate criminal acts such as assault, burglary, the" or robbery. The method

of opera!on is for an individual to knock on your door and advise of a u!lity problem such as gas leak, water or electrical

issues. They will likely be dressed as a u!lity worker in coveralls, safety vest and even a hard hat. They may be carrying

paperwork or a clipboard to give the appearance of official business. Their goal is to enter your home. Once inside they

commit their intended crime. Best preven!on is to ask ques!ons, request iden!fica!on specifically as to who they repre-

sent; examples for our area would be Questar, Brigham City Corpora!on, Rocky Mountain Power, Comcast, etc. and proof

they are actually working on a u!lity problem.

DO NOT INVITE THEM INTO YOUR HOME WITHOUT PROPER IDENTIFICATION!

MY FATHER. MY FRIEND.

Funny that I should turn to my Mother's favorite writer or to my Daughter's Mother's Day tradi!on, to write about my Father.

OR maybe it is just another plan for me to lay a guilt trip on everyone to write more on their "BRIEF LIFE HISTORY" OR to even to

begin wri!ng SOMETHING. However it is June and I promised when I wrote about Mother's in May that I would return the favor in

June, when we honor our Fathers. Now that is exactly what I am doing.

My Mother loved anything wri$en by Richard L. Evans. In my Richard Evans' Quote Book, the sec!on, "Home, Marriage, Moth-

er's, Father's, Families contained some thoughts I liked. I have always had a hard !me separa!ng the Mother/Father team in the

home I grew up in because my parents worked “as a team”. Even when we children tried the 'divide and conquer game' (If dad

says, "No" ask mom), we never fooled our Team Parents. One quote talked about, "Marriage is a good way for two people to be-

come acquainted". How true that is. Even when all our family got together for Mother's Day, our children (who have all been mar-

ried at least 13 to 30 years) had a lively discussion about life before and a"er marriage. It went something like this, BEFORE MAR-

RIAGE: "This is the person I want to live with forever". AFTER MARRIAGE: "Who on earth is this person I married!". Even their

Father and I a"er almost 54 years of marriage allude (jokingly?) to the parable of the ra$le snake who tricks the boy into carry-

ing the snake down the mountain and then the ra$ler bites the boy. The boy cries out, "How could you do that. I thought I was

your friend." The snake replies, "You knew what I was, when you picked me up."

Every now and then Jack and I will shake our head about something in our marriage, and the other one will say,” You knew what

I was when you picked me up!" The other one of us will shake their head and say, "Not even. Not even". I THINK we smile as we

say this! Wow, I sure Meandered far away with that last example. Anyway, the point was that my parents made marriage look so

easy. They were married over 64 years and we children never heard cross words between them. There may have been a lot that

went on 'behind closed doors', but disagreements never reached our ears. Maybe another quote from my Mother's favorite

quote book also pays tribute to fathers and husbands. " A truly happy marriage is one in which a woman gives the best years of her

life to the man who made them the best.”

This year my Daughter's Mother's Day tradi!on took us to The Pioneer Theatre Company to see "The Will Rogers Follies, A Life In

Review." I have heard so much about Will Rogers from my father and those in that genera!on that I was surprised to find out he

died in 1935. That was seven years before I was born but even I know that Will Rogers was among other things, "a social commen-

tator, humorist, cowboy, and philanthropist. Dad and most of America loved Will Rogers. He was like Bob Hope in our day. All

three of them loved to chide the government in a funny way. Most of the !me it was "spot on".

I loved our family dinners and other family get-togethers because there was always, "a whole lot of talking going on". Usually dad

was in the front of the discussions and could give us comments on EVERYTHING from the Government to the Price of Rice in Chi-

na. Dad and I can have or make up a comment or opinion on anything. We call ourselves Humorists. That's why we both like Will

Rogers.

Will: I belong to no organized party. I am a Democrat!

Dad: Dad served in the Idaho House of Representa!ves as a Democrat. To his sorrow, most of his kids became Republicans.

Will: Poli!cs has become so expensive that it takes a lot of money even to be defeated.

Will: The more you read and observe about this poli!cs thin, you got to admit that each party is worse than the other. The

one that is out always looks the best.

Will: Be thankful we aren't ge'ng all the Government we are paying for.

Will: The income tax has made more liars out of the American people than golf has.

Will: A fool and his money are soon elected.

Dad: I know my dad was a humorist because he was always asked to be the Master of Ceremonies at a lot of gatherings. Maybe

he used quotes from Will Rogers.

The last thing I wrote about is your own Brief Life History –why not write a few lines about your own dad or maybe a few jokes

or funny things he le" you with. Even if you have to do like my dad and I are guilty of, make them up. It is be$er than leaving NO

life story for family and friends. Jack says I exaggerate or tell funny stories that are not true. I just remind him that my stories are

funnier than his. I try not to disagree in front of the children. It isn't good for our marriage. Speaking of our Marriage, my dad said

a funny thing, when Jack and I were married. It went like this, "Jack, if there is any trouble in your marriage we know you aren't

causing it. You can come home but Marge can't." Do you think my dad was making that up?

Another thing Will Rogers said was, "Never miss a good chance to shut up." Maybe I'd be$er try that and Meander away. See

you next month.
