The Sunshine Vitamin Vanessa Berg, MD LRD CDE, LE

As we await another April snowstorm, let us talk about sunshine, specifically

the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D. There has been much in the news lately

about Vitamin D. It is a crucial component of over 200 reactions in the

human body. Lack of this vitamin has been associated with serious illness.

Researchers have found that inadequate Vitamin D is associated with cancer,

diabetes, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, heart disease and many others.

There is currently a vitamin D deficiency “epidemic” in the United States! We can assume most

of adults living in MN and ND are not getting enough Vitamin D in their diets. The other source

of Vitamin D is the sun, and we wear parkas 6 months out of the year, limiting our exposure to

the rays! Besides, we want to avoid skin cancer and therefore protect ourselves from the UV

rays that are required to activate Vitamin D in the body.

We have to consume Vitamin D in our diet. What foods contain Vitamin D? The perception is

often that “dairy foods” contain Vitamin D. That is true is some cases- milk is fortified with it; it

isn’t a source of Vitamin D until it goes through the pasteurization process. Cheese and yogurt

however are not reliable sources. Some yogurt is now fortified,

however. A cup of milk provides 100 international units (ius) of

Vitamin D. We need to drink 4 cups of milk to meet the current

recommendation of 400 ius per day. Most adults drink less than 2

cups per day. Leading experts feel that this recommendation (that

few people meet) is way too low! That is because these guidelines

were created many years ago for young, healthy individuals who

lived near the equator and were exposed to a greater amount of

sunlight, as well as a more effective angle of the sun. There were not considerations made

for people who have chronic disease like diabetes, heart disease or cystic fibrosis. Now we

know better!

Most adults need 2,000-5,000 ius of Vitamin D per day to prevent inadequacy. Some people

need 5,000-7,000 ius per day! That’s 50-70 cups of milk!! Yikes!!

It is recommended that we all take a Vitamin D supplement of

1,000-2,000 ius each day. People should ask their primary care

provider to test blood levels of Vitamin D periodically.

ND SMP Scam of the Month May 2018

Scam Artists Read Obituaries Too!

Sharing personal information is risky enough in day-to-day business, but it gets worse in death. It’s never good practice to let strangers know your name, address, birth day, birthplace, family members’ names, or hobbies. This is

just some of the information that we post on social media, share when we take surveys, or information we identify when we fill out product registration forms. But obituaries can take the risk to a whole new level. We all want to acknowledge a loved one’s life, but be aware that there is a lot of information in those details that a

scammer can use. The more personal information that you provide in the obituary, the greater the risk of scams...against the deceased and survivors alike. Here are some things to remember when writing an obituary:

Give the deceased’s age, but leave out the date of birth, Don’t include the middle name, home address, birthplace, and mother’s maiden name,

Don’t include the names of family survivors. This last piece of advice is hard to follow, but you put family members at risk of scams.

Obituaries are pure gold for scammers, who then target grieving spouses or family members. Some scams that can be

related to information from obituaries:

Identity theft

With details obtained from obituaries, scammers can purchase or figure out the person’s social security number to fraudulently open credit card accounts, apply for loans or even file tax returns and collect

refunds.

Grandparents scam Scammers use names published in obituaries to pose as grandchildren of the deceased, calling

survivors with sob stories about being arrested. Deceptive debt collection

Scammers often call family members claiming that the deceased owed them money and it is the

family’s responsibility to cover the debt, not true. Debts are paid from the estate, never from the pockets of relatives.

Fictitious life insurance Scammer posing as insurance agents or attorney’s contact survivors telling them there is a policy but

before releasing the payment there is a final premium or taxes to be paid. Burglary

If the deceased’s address and time of the memorial service are in the obituary, burglars know when to

strike the unoccupied home.

Contact the Consumer Protection Division at the ND Attorney General’s Office at 1-800-472-2600 if you think you have been scammed.
