SILVER LAKE ASSOCIATION OF CHESHAM AND NELSON, INC. ANNUAL MEETING...9AM...SATURDAY, JULY 2, 2011

WELLS MEMORIAL SCHOOL (Rain Location Chesham Village Church due to possible use by Harrisville Old Home Days)

OUR MISSION: TO PROTECT SILVER LAKE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

http://slakenh.org

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Linda Braun

Summer is around the corner and the memory of ice and

snow a distant thought. Just a few weeks ago our dock was

put in by the guys from What’s Up Doc and they protected

themselves from the chilly water temperature by wearing div-

ing suits. By Memorial Day weekend, a number of us were

swimming as air temperatures had reached almost 90 de-grees.

Polly Croteau, our resident loon expert, tells us that one pair and one juvenile adult loon

have been seen at Grassy Island. As my husband and I motored across the lake recently, we

confirmed Polly’s sightings. As we cut the boat engine we watched and listened as the loons

called each other; surely a sign that summer season on the lake has arrived. The Silver Lake Association is busy all year round, but summer is when we really kick into

high gear. As with most recent summers, our volunteer Lake Host program has already be-

gun welcoming fishermen and boaters to Stoney Beach. We’ll start the paid hosting session

the weekend of July 4th and continue through August 21st.

We are always looking for volunteers to be Weed Watchers on Silver Lake. Weed watching

involves a small amount of time during the summer months searching the shallow areas of the lake for invasive species. Volunteers survey designated areas using their own canoes,

kayaks or other slow-moving boats.

Please remember to put our annual meeting on your calendar for July 2nd, 9:00am at the

Wells Memorial School. This year’s speaker will be Meade Cadot from the Harris Center in

Hancock, who will surely provide us with an entertaining and learning experience.

ANNUAL MEETING SILVER LAKE LAND TRUST

August 20...10am...Brantwood Camp (Rain location Wells Memorial School)

Members and Non-members alike are welcome

Stoney Beach is a very busy place throughout the summer, and we ask for your help in protecting it and the Lake. Before you launch, please allow our Lake Hosts to check your boat for invasive exotic plants. This will help us keep our

waters healthy and clean. Please use ONLY the stairs to enter the water...walking over the erosion-control mats will defeat their purpose, and entering at the boat ramp could prove dangerous for swimmers. When you leave, please take trash and belongings with you. The Silver Lake Association thanks you for your assistance.

VOL.XL SPRING/SUMMER 2011 SLA NEWSLETTER

SLA COMMITTEE REPORTS

Erosion Control…The June, 2010, microburst slowed down the

cleaning, repair and testing of the existing culverts and the com-pletion of those on Eastside and Cricket Hill Roads. We will

continue to work with the Town to insure that the storm man-

agement project is completed as well as to monitor its effective-

ness. Pictured here, an erosion-control mat at Stoney Beach.

Fish and Wildlife…Silver Lake is a healthy body of water with

plenty of fish for anglers of all ages...see page 13 for freshwater fish consumption guidelines.

Lake Host Program…Volunteer Hosts Tom and Edie Fallon returned this year and work

early am hours on weekends from May 28 to June 26. Paid Lake Hosts will work full week-

end hours July 1 to August 21. As funding for this program is now based on the number of

boats inspected, the added hours are helpful. Over 700 inspections were performed on 492 boats, and amazingly enough, half of those were kayaks! If you are interested in a paid or

volunteer position, contact Judy Putnam at [email protected] or 603 352-1233.

Loon Protection…The loon is still a ―threatened‖ species in N.H. As they are indicators of

the health of our environment, protecting and respecting them can also lead to keeping our

Lake healthy and clean. Please join this all important effort.

Membership...It was a long winter, sad in some ways, so I encourage you to start fresh. Come to the Annual Meeting, bring a friend...it costs $10 a year and takes only a few hours

of your time. You will learn what’s happening in the area and how to protect and preserve

the Lake. Please contact me, John Croteau, at [email protected] or 603 352-8355.

Nominating...We are looking for a Nominating Chairman...please contact Linda Braun

at [email protected] or 603 424-4233 to learn about this volunteer position. Recreation and Safety…The Association no longer ―sponsors‖ sailboat races, but does en-

courage you to participate in them any Sunday during the season. Contact Dave Quimby

(827-3613) or Judd Dexter (827-3296) if you are interested...at the moment, the course

markers will be out for two scheduled races, July 3 and Sept. 4.

Stoney Beach...A lot of time was spent watering the new plantings

last summer and we have Tom Chabott to thank for his kind dona-tion of the use of his hoses and generator plus the gas to run it. We

certainly appreciate this assistance and thank him and Nancy for

this and many years of keeping an eye on things at the boat ramp.

Some of the shrubs were damaged during the winter, but most ap-

pear to be doing well...this committee will continue to maintain the gardens and monitor the use of the beach.

Water Quality…Based on 2010 testing by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental

Services (NHDES), phosphorus levels are ideal to average although Acid Neutralizing Capac-

ity (ANC) is below average, but this has been typical. Also, 12 small-mouth bass were sub-

mitted for mercury testing and results were well within ―safe to consume‖ DES guidelines.

Thanks to our crew. Panos Pitsas, Chet Hurd, Roger and Sandy Williams. Weed Watch…We found no evidence of milfoil or other invasive plants in 2010, but the

threat is real...once an invasive species takes hold, it is almost impossible to eliminate. The

Lakes with both Lake Host and Weed Watch programs seem to be better able to prevent in-

festations. To help our efforts, post our weed watch card where all visitors to your cottage

can see it...pay attention to the plants along your piece of the shoreline and report anything unusual to our weed watchers...if your boat visits Squam Lake or Powder Mill Pond, clean it,

your trailer, fishing gear and even your shoes before making contact with Silver Lake. Milfoil

spreads by seed and fragmentation, so every piece can form a new plant. We thank all of our

diligent and dedicated 2010 volunteers...Polly Kendall, Mary Beth Mollica, Bob Gogolen, Beth

Caldwell, Alison and Ken Jolly, Judy Putnam, Sarah Wilson, John Croteau, Jr., Den-

nis Fallon, Todd Chamberlain, Wally Francis, Doz Delori, Eleanor Drury, Kay and Richard Ryan, Zach Miller and Sarah Kossayda.

VOL.XL SPRING/SUMMER 2011 SLA NEWSLETTER

―THE LADIES OF THE LAKES‖

Do you believe that art should be purchased as an investment for its monetary value alone, and

that creating art is hard work that is done just for the sake of selling to the highest bidder?

If you believe that art should be bought more for the enjoyment it brings when it is decorating

your home, or that it is a wonderful occupation that brings joy and happiness to those who create

and own it, then you should meet this wonderful group of talented women. Flanking Pam Dexter’s beautiful watercolor of Silver Lake

are, on the left, Pam (standing) and Nancy Chabott, both of

Silver Lake. Right is Jane Pitt (standing) of Stone Pond and

Joy Birdsey of Granite Lake. Thus the name ―Ladies of the

Lakes‖. They meet without fail every Wednesday at Jane’s

home where they create, sometimes take lessons from

guest artists, and truly enjoy each others company. And

they’ve made a promise...when it stops being fun, it’s

over...but I really don’t see that happening any time soon!

When Jane dissolved her law practice in Boston in 2003

and moved to New Hampshire, she had a ―bucket list‖ that

included many things, but learning to paint had high prior-

ity. When out driving one day she saw a sign for a ―Tole

Painting Class‖...this is the folk art of decorative painting on tin and wooden utensils, furniture and other objects. Even though she had no idea what ―tole‖

meant, she couldn’t get inside to sign up fast enough! It was there that she met Joy and the

seeds of the ―Ladies‖ began to sprout and grow. Pam signed up for

the same class a year later…her Dad had just passed away and she

wanted to do something creative and comforting with his 350 sap

buckets…and the group became a trio until Pam brought Nancy

into the fold about a year later. They came and stay together not

only because they have great chemistry with each other, which I

witnessed first hand, but also because they share in common a

genuine love of painting as well as the arts in general…water colors,

tole, knitting, sewing, and dance to name just a few.

Every year for the past three years

they have celebrated their love of art with an invitation-only Gala, an

open house on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Their art works are spread throughout Jane’s home, are all available for sale, and every

piece is as beautiful, or more so, than the next. Each Gala has a

unique theme and this year will be ―Heirlooms and Keepsakes‖…the

―Ladies‖ dress according to theme, serve wine, provide live entertain-

ment and, as is their primary goal, just have fun...buy, don’t buy,

it’s all the same to them! If you have never been, and this sounds as

wonderful to you as it does to me, you can let them know you are

interested by contacting Nancy at [email protected], 827-3920 or

Jane at [email protected], 876-4145.

And, if you have a keepsake that could be made more beautiful with a

creative touch, they would be happy to talk with you and come up with

something that will make you happy. If you would like to see some of

their work, you can find them at their booth at the Old Home Days in

Swanzey on Saturday, July 16. Actually, they are considering opening a

gallery there to feature not only their own work, but also that of local

artists...a dream come true in their efforts to promote the fun and af-

fordability of art, and to pass along to children and adults of all ages

and abilities what they themselves have learned about how to satisfy

their creative spirits...they are truly unique and exceptional women.

*From top right, Jane at work, Joy’s pie basket and Nancy’s plate...all examples of tole painting

The court on Cricket Hill Road is looking for new members. Whether you

NEW HAMPSHIRE LAKES ASSOCIATION

The SLA is one of 140 associations that are NHLA members. The full-time NH Lakes lobbyist

helps represent your interests on Statewide issues such as boater safety and appropriate

public access. They have initiated bills to strengthen the Shoreland Protection Act, signifi-cantly increase funding for the Marine Patrol, and create a dedicated fund for milfoil preven-

tion and research...this latter legislation provides funds for our Lake Host Program.

In particular, this year the NHLA has worked on and supported Senate Bill 154 which will

maintain the fees that fund the Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act...the intent of this

Act is to protect water quality by preventing soil and pollutants from entering New Hamp-

shire’s lakes and rivers. If this bill does not pass, the DES will lose its funding for this pro-gram. It was on track to be passed until the House added an amendment to remove New

Hampshire from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative cap and trade program...the Senate

is against this repeal.

Also, the current 2012-13 State budget will cut much of the DES funding for programs such

as this if it passes. You can help by contacting your State legislators and requesting that

they remove the amendment from SB 154 as well as reinstate other funding for DES pro-grams. For specifics you can contact Peter Goodwin, the NHLA Environmental Policy Associ-

ate at [email protected]. He will be glad to assist you in your efforts.

You can contact them on the web at www.nhlakes.org, e-mail them at [email protected], call

603 226-0299, or write to 14 Horseshoe Pond Lane, Concord, NH 03301. At the very least, we

encourage you to join and become an advocate for the Lake you love.

SUPPORT LOON PRESERVATION!!!

The Loon Preservation Committee was founded on the belief that loons can thrive in the company of people if we value them and respect their

needs, something that area resident, Sue Coleman, whole heartedly be-

lieves. She has seen the interest in and love of loons all around Silver

Lake, and has taken her interest just one step farther.

She sells locally embroidered and silkscreened sweatshirts that are

comfy, oversized, pigment-dyed and 100% cotton. Just perfect for a day at Silver Lake!

The Loon Preservation Committee logo shown here is silkscreened on the back along with the

address of their website...www.loon.org.

On the front are three choices of embroidery, loons w/chicks for women, loon head for men and the logo on the right for toddlers and children.

The best part is that she donates profits to the Committee for education,

signs and studies.

VOL.XL SPRING/SUMMER 2011 SLA NEWSLETTER

―HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS‖

When I heard that the St. Jean’s had sold their cottage at 27 Eastside Road, I decided that I would like to include a little bit about it in our newsletter. For-tunately, I was able to enlist the aid of Paul’s daughter, Lou Anne St. Jean Reagle who wrote me about their happy history there. Paul and Hazel bought the property in 1953 and had to clear lots of rocks and boulders from the land to build their cottage as well as make the beautiful beach that is there today. Wouldn’t be New England without all those rocks

now, would it! He built it one section at a time, and they lived there six months every year, winters being spent in Keene. Lou Anne tells me

that growing up on Silver Lake was the most wonderful gift her parents could have ever given them. Waterski-ing started at 9am and lasted till sunset…her father was the one to go to if you wanted to learn because he had

such patience. Time in the afternoons was spent hik-ing, exploring and berry picking. However, after Hazel passed away in 2008, and Paul lost his dear friend, Tom Murphy, the following year, it was very hard for him to be at the Lake. They thought long and hard before selling, but with the repairs needed and distances to travel, it made the most sense. Lou Anne lives in Georgia and has a home in Florida on the intercoastal where they can still share laughter and a love of water and nature...just spotting manatees and dolphins instead of loons and moose! Paula lives in Keene where she can keep an eye on her Dad at his new home at 49 Common Way. Fortunately, Paul is in good health, has traveled to Germany, and various cities around the coun-try, and will celebrate his 95th birthday in June. If you’re up for it, Paul, we’d love to have you pay us a

visit this summer to share some of your warm and wonderful memories. I think Lou Anne summed it up perfectly when she wrote...―It will always be home in our hearts.‖

and Justin Putzel...grandson to Judith Putzel of

206 Lead Mine Road in Nelson...another cutie to join all the little Silver Lakers who were born this

past year.

October 5, 2010...Charlotte Grace was born to Charlie and Anna

Sinclair Geiselhart and named for her late grandmother, Charlotte

Rives of 85 Eastside Road. I am sure that, like her grandmother be-

fore her, she will love the lake and enjoy many summers here.

October 19, 2010...Colin was born to Tom and Katrina

O’Conor...a first grandson for Harvey O’Conor of 97 Eastside Road.

November 12, 2010...Marjorie ―Peggy‖

Page Colony, 93, of 59 Eastside Road,

Silver Lake, passed away at her home

on Prospect Street in the Center of Har-

risville where she had lived for the last

69 years. She will be remembered for her vivid personality, energy, intelli-

gence, intellectual curiosity and outspoken politics, all of which

played a part in the things she accomplished for the Town of Har-

risville...she lead the successful effort to build the Wells Memorial

School, worked to move the library to its current site in the his-toric brick vestry on the shore of Harrisville Pond, and was in the

lead when it came to conserving the west side of Silver Lake and Sandy Beach for which she

was honored with the Silver Lake Land Trust Stewardship Award. As Edie Clark so aptly put

it, ―This is how I remember Peggy, someone who had more family members than most politi-

cal parties yet someone who could make time for any one of us as if we were the only one.‖

December 1, 2010...Eugene A. ―Gene‖ Seaver died at his home with his family by his side.

For his dedication to the student athletes of New Hampshire throughout his teaching career,

he was inducted into the NHIAA Hall of Fame, an honor of which he was very proud. He rel-

ished spending time with his loving family, most especially with his four granddaughters, and

very much enjoyed his cottage and boating on the Lake...he will be missed by many.

December 3, 2010...Carol Ann Lepisto, wife of George ―Sonny‖ Lepisto, and a long time resi-

dent of Silver Lake’s Eastside, peacefully passed away...though she and her husband enjoyed

retirement in Florida for the past twelve years, she called New Hampshire her home for most

of her life, and she will be missed by the Silver Lake Community.

January 15, 2011...Thomas

Goundrey, Jr., married Paige

Elizabeth Walker, daughter of

William Walker of 145 Eastside

Road...the wedding took place in the Turks and Caicos. Pictured

here are Adam and Sarah Walker

Kossayda, Thomas, Paige, Jenny

Norman and Bill Walker. What a

beautiful place to tie the knot,

even if it isn’t Silver Lake!!!

January 21, 2011...Nicholas Isaak, Jr., husband of Kim Shaw...177 Eastside Road...passed

away after a valiant battle with cancer. Not only will he be missed by his family and friends,

but also by many in the world of art where his exceptional abilities as an artist and in art res-

toration were well known and in great demand.

February 1, 2011...Elizabeth ―Betty‖ Harrington MacDonald, noted Delaware artist and his-

torian, will be greatly missed by her son, Andrew, of 33 Eastside Road. She couldn’t remem-

ber a time when she wasn’t painting, and she was able to capture the feeling of a place in the

watercolors she so loved; but her pen and inks of historic landmarks, especially in Delaware,

brought her more recognition. ―She will always be on her porch looking out over the Lake engaged in good conversation.‖

February 16, 2011...Rosamond ―Ros‖ Page Putnam passed away at her

home on Court Street in Keene. She spent every summer at 125 Eastside

Road, better known as ―Toad Hall‖, from the time they bought it in 1947. I

remember many wonderful celebrations in honor of her son Fred on his

Fourth of July birthday when everyone on the Lake would gather at their

cottage to watch the fabulous fireworks displays created by her husband, Dave. She was always the most kind and gracious hostess. She was de-

voted to supporting the arts and served many organizations such as the

Putnam Foundation, the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery, the MacDowell

Colony and Monadnock Music. Hers was a life spent in service to others

with ―more than my share of sunshine.‖

February 22, 2011...Max Parker was born to Jenn and Rich

Johnston, grandson to Tom and Sue and great grandson to An-

nette, all of 57 Eastside Road. Welcome to another little Johnston!

March 10, 2011...Harvey Dunn

was born to Adam and Sarah

Walker Kossayda...grandson to

Jennie Norman and Bill Walker of 145 Eastside Road. A future of

Silver Lake summers awaits!

March 19, 2011...Ann

Shaw passed away due to

complications from cancer. Her Silver Lake family and

friends are very sorry to lose her and will miss her in a big

way. She may not be here in body, but will be here in

spirit, especially when her granddaughter, Laura, marries

Timothy James Miles August 20 at the cottage at 177 East-

side Road. Her Grandson, Daniel, is also engaged and will

marry Caitlin Schneider in July of 2012 after she gradu-

ates from college. We know if you aren’t playing tennis in

heaven, Annie, you are definitely watching from above!

May 4, 2011...Mary Louise Higgins Whitaker passed away at Westwood

Care Center with her family by her side. She and Ken were married for 53

years and made their home at 38 Westside Road. She was a woman of

many talents...an avid tennis player, cross-country and downhill skier and

world traveler. She loved being at her home on Silver Lake watching the

loons or riding in the motor boat while her children or grandchildren

learned to swim and water ski. Mary was a loving mother, grandmother

and a devoted wife who will be missed by all.

May 22, 2011...Nick and Katie Braun Pendergast

announce the birth of their first child, a daughter

they will call Sophie Ellis. I am sure she will

spend lots of quality time at Silver Lake with her grandparents, Ted and Linda Braun of 293 Breed Road. Congratulations to the proud and

happy parents.

May 28, 2011...Dave and Cindy Yont Krumins announce the birth of a son, Jon Alonzo. He is the

grandson of the late Randy and Marina Yont, and we hope that he will experience many wonderful

Silver Lake summers at the family cottage at 71 Eastside Road.

It’s an especially hard year when you lose nine of your dear Silver Lake friends, and eerie, yet won-

derful when you gain eleven babies over the same span of time...the Lake lives on…………………….

Silver Lake Association

P. O. Box 82

Harrisville, NH 03450

SILVER LAKE ASSOCIATION OF CHESHAM AND NELSON, INC.

Your Lake Association is busy year round helping to maintain our amazing Lake, not only for

our enjoyment now, but to preserve it for future generations. Here is what your SLA dues do for your Lake:

Storm Water Control/Culverts initiation and implementation, with the Silver Lake Land Trust, to minimize erosion and silt flow, keeping our Lake clean and healthy.

Maintain the Renovation of Stoney Beach and coordination of volunteers.

Lake Hosting and Weed Watching Programs, which have kept our Lake free of mil-foil and other invasive plants.

Once Milfoil has infested a lake, it can be an expensive proposition to eradicate this invasive plant. As an example, Ossipee has spent upwards of $150,000 in their attempts to control milfoil.

Annual Water & Fish Testing to monitor phosphorous and mercury levels.

Loon Preservation Committee Support. We agree that protecting and respecting our loons can lead to keeping a lake healthy.

New Hampshire Lakes Association Membership. NHLA works tirelessly to preserve our lakes and rivers through educating the public and initiating important legislation.

PLEASE HELP! Become a member! It doesn’t matter whether you live on the Lake or just visit regularly. Just $10 per person will help us keep our Lake beautiful. Join as an individual, or in-clude each member of your family. To play your part, contact Membership Chair, John Croteau, at [email protected] or 603 352-8355 and join this worthwhile effort. For more info visit our website at http://slakenh.org or e-mail [email protected].

We have more work to do in our continuing mission to preserve the water quality of Silver Lake for Future Generations.

It takes all of us!
