TO ENLIGHTEN AND ENTERTAIN

Today we use paper to make books, but books weren’t always made of folded

pages held together by stitches or glue. The way the pages were bound

depended on the material being used.

In China, around the time of Confucius, books were made of strips of wood

or bamboo lashed together with cord. The books were rolled, or folded like an

accordion. In Indonesia and Southeast Asia, books were made from the leaves of

palm trees. The long, narrow shape of the page came from the shape of the palm

leaf. The leaves were boiled in water or milk to make them stiff and strong, and then

they were strung on cords. Knots or coins were placed at either end to hold them

together. In order to read the book, you would hold the pages in a stack and flip one

page at a time. It was only in the early twentieth century, when paper made of wood

pulp became popular, that our current methods of bookbinding flourished.

While we’re no longer using wood, leaves, bark, metal, or animal skin to make

our books, we are certainly incorporating the same sense of resourcefulness

and creativity, and we continue making a lot of fun and innovative books.

Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) and ASTM F963. These tests include, but are not limited to, lead,

heavy metals, phthalates, and other applicable tests. We also utilize a safety testing specialist to review our products

and components from the very beginning prior to the manufacturing stage. Before materials or components are

sourced, the product is subject to a design evaluation and reviewed for age appropriateness, design hazards, and all

required testing. Once the product is manufactured, it undergoes final testing at a certified 3rd party laboratory.

These test documents and samples are then reviewed and approved before the product is released into the market.
