Chapter 1 Introduction to SilkPlan

This chapter provides an overview of installing SilkPlan and includes installation guidelines, information about the release, and instructions on contacting Segue Technical Support.

SilkPlan 7.0 is a comprehensive Test Management solution that includes new versions of SilkScheduler and SilkRadar that are closely integrated with the included SilkTest version 6.5.1.1.

Note If SQL Server is not installed on your machine, SilkPlan also installs MSDE (Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine), which can be used as a local Test Management database.

Licensing with SilkMeter

SilkPlan employs Segue Software’s SilkMeter to control SilkPlan product usage. SilkMeter supports various combinations of concurrent as well as metered use of software applications and offers flexibility in deploying SilkPlan. SilkPlan uses the floating license capability of SilkMeter, in which concurrent license usage is controlled. This means that client computers that have SilkPlan installed will connect to a network or local license server for license policy administration.

Overview of the installation and configuration process

The following is an overview of the installation and configuration process.

1 Find the host ID or dongle ID of the computer that will be your license server. See “Finding your host ID” on page 13. Note that you must have the host ID of your license server, not the host name. If you do not know the host ID, you can use the Host Info utility, smHostInfo.exe, to find the host ID as described on page 13.

2 Access https://license.segue.com and follow the instructions to generate a license policy for SilkPlan and have the policy e-mailed to the address that you specify.

3 Install SilkMeter (version 2.5.2 or higher) on the computer that will be your license server, along with your SilkPlan license policy. See “Installing SilkMeter” on page 11.

4 Install SilkTest 6.5.1.1 on your local machine. See “Installing SilkTest” on page 17.

5 Install SilkPlan 7.0 on your local machine. See “Installing SilkPlan” on page 25.

6 Configure SilkPlan. See “Configuring SilkPlan” on page 31.7 Configure SilkTest for Test Management. See “Configuring SilkTest” on

page 41.8 Configure Microsoft Word for Segue Requirements. See “Configuring

and Managing Requirements” on page 47.

Note SilkMeter only needs to be installed once per license server. If you have multiple license servers, you will need multiple license policy files, each one tied to a particular license server. A single SilkMeter license server can administer license policies for multiple Segue products.

About SilkPlan

Supported Platforms For information on supported platforms for SilkPlan, see the Release Notes.

SilkTest configuration recommendations

We recommend:

• A PC with a Pentium processor running at a minimum of 600 MHz. • SilkPlan is compatible with Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or

Windows XP.• A hard drive with 250 MB of free space. • 128 MB of RAM. Add to this the amount of RAM required to run your

application under test.

See “SilkMeter license server requirements” on page 14 for information about license server requirements.

Important installation guidelines

Before Installing:

• Uninstall any previous version of SilkTest. To uninstall SilkTest, select Start > Programs > SilkTest > SilkTest Uninstall. You must reboot your system to after running SilkTest Uninstall.

1 INTRODUCTION TO SILKPLANAbout SilkPlan

• Uninstall any previous version of SilkPlan. SilkPlan does not have an uninstall menu item. To uninstall SilkPlan, open the Control Panel by selecting Start > Settings > Control Panel, then select Add/Remove Programs. Select SilkPlan from the Currently Installed Programs list, then click Remove.

• You should also use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall any previous version of MSDE - this is listed in Add/Remove Programs as Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SEGUE).

• After you uninstall the previous versions, backup any existing projects you want to save, then delete the SilkTest Folder, the SilkPlan folder, and also the Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$SEGUE folder.Dual-boot machines

Dual-boot machines If you are installing SilkTest and have a dual-boot machine with more than one Windows operating system, for example, both Windows 98 and Windows NT, you must install SilkTest in different directories under the two operating systems. Otherwise, you risk causing problems with the Uninstall program. For example, if you want to install SilkTest on both the Windows 98 and Windows NT partitions on a dual-boot machine, install into c:\silkwin98 and c:\silknt, respectively.

Windows NT, 2000 and XP You must have local administrator privileges to install SilkTest or SilkTest International on a Windows NT, 2000, or XP machine. Once SilkTest is properly installed, any user can run it. If you are installing on a Windows NT, 2000, or XP server, you must have domain-level administrator privileges.

Active Desktop You cannot perform testing when the Active Desktop feature of Internet Explorer 4 Windows NT is installed. For information about removing the Active Desktop, see Removing the Active Desktop in the SilkTest online Help (SilkTest/Help/Help Topics). SilkTest can co-exist with the Active Desktop in Windows 98, since it is an integral part of that operating system.

Items included with SilkTest

All of these tools are available in SilkTest:

Chapter 2 Installing SilkMeter

This chapter describes how to obtain license policies for SilkPlan 7.0 and SilkTest 6.5.1.1, and also how to install SilkMeter. You must have adminis-trative privileges to install SilkMeter.

Note The current release of SilkPlan requires SilkMeter version 2.5.2 or higher, as well as SilkPlanPro 6.x, SilkTest 6.5, and SilkRadar 3.0 license policies.

SilkMeter only needs to be installed once per license server. If you have multiple license servers, you will need multiple license policy files, each one tied to a particular license server. A single SilkMeter license server can administer license policies for multiple Segue products.

We recommend the following, if you have:

• already received SilkPlan and SilkTest license policies associated with your license server, see “Installing SilkMeter on your license server” on page 14.

• not received a license policy yet, see the following section, “Generating a SilkPlan or SilkTest license policy”.

2 INSTALLING SILKMETERGenerating a SilkPlan or SilkTest license policy

Generating a SilkPlan or SilkTest license policy

You will need a license policy to run SilkPlan and SilkTest. You can use Segue’s online License Generator to generate a license policy and have it automatically e-mailed to the address that you specify. The online License Generator requires a SSL-capable browser, such as Netscape 4.x or Internet Explorer 5.x.

The following is an overview of obtaining a license policy for SilkPlan. Each of these steps is described in detail beginning on page 13.

1 Find the host ID or dongle ID of the computer that will be your license server. See “Finding your Host or Dongle ID” on page 13.

2 Access https://license.segue.com and log in using your Customer ID and Access Code. Your Customer ID is the password you use to log in to the protected area of the Segue Web site. You can find your Customer ID and Access Code:

- in the e-mail you received announcing this release, if you are an existing customer

- on the sticker on the inside cover of the hard copy of this guide that you received in your shipment of SilkPlan

Note If you don’t have an access code, or have forgotten your access code, click the forgot your access code link on https://license.segue.com to have your access code e-mailed to you.

3 Follow the instructions to generate a license policy for SilkPlan and SilkTest and have the each policy e-mailed to the address that you specify. Save each license policy to your license server computer.

Note If you chose to have a license policy sent to you in the body of the e-mail message, rather than as an attachment (the default), cut the license policy information from the e-mail message and save it in a text file called license.pol on your license server.

4 Install SilkMeter, along with your SilkPlan license policy, on your license server computer. See “Installing SilkMeter on your license server” on page 14.

5 Install SilkTest. See “Installing SilkTest, the SilkTest Agent, or SilkTest Runtime” on page 17.

3 INSTALLING SILKTESTInstalling SilkTest, the SilkTest Agent, or SilkTest Runtime

To reset your TEMP environment variable:

a) Click Start > Settings > Control Panel and double-click the System icon.• On Windows2000 or XP, click the Advanced tab, then click

Environment Variables.• On Windows NT, click the Environment tab.

b) Under User Variables or System Variables, double-click the TEMP variable.

c) Enter a valid directory, then click OK.d) Restart the SilkTest installation by double-clicking SilkTest.exe

or SilkTestInternational.exe. 2 Click Next on the Welcome dialog box, review the License Agreement,

then click Yes to accept the terms of the License Agreement. 3 On the SilkTest Licensing dialog box, click Next. This dialog is provided

for informational purposes only. The SilkTest installer checks for files on your machine to determine whether references to a license server already exist or need to be created at this point.

4 Based on the license reference check:• If the SilkTest installer finds existing references to a SilkMeter

license server, the Select SilkMeter Setup Options dialog box is displayed. This occurs if you have already installed SilkTest, if you have already set up your SilkMeter license server, or if you have installed other Segue products that use SilkMeter for licensing. A single SilkMeter license server can administer license policies for multiple Segue products.Use the radio buttons to specify whether you want to use your existing SilkMeter license server or create a reference to a new SilkMeter license server, then click Next.

• If the SilkTest installer does not find references to a SilkMeter license server, or if you selected Set up server on the Select SilkMeter Setup Options dialog box, you must specify a new license server. Type the Hostname of your SilkMeter license server (the hostname is the name of the machine on which SilkMeter is installed), modify the Port number if port 5461 is already in use, and then click Next. You must enter a Hostname and Port number; the Setup Program cannot continue without this information.

3 INSTALLING SILKTESTInstalling SilkTest, the SilkTest Agent, or SilkTest Runtime

In some cases, specifying the simple name of the license server in the Hostname field -- licenseserver, for example -- may not work. If this is the case, a message stating that there is no license server running on the Hostname you specified will be displayed. Re-specify the Hostname using a fully qualified name, such as licenseserver.segue.com.

5 Click Next on the Choose Destination Location dialog box to accept the default Destination Folder in which SilkTest will be installed, or click Browse to specify a different folder. If you specified a location in which SilkTest was previously installed and some of the files remain in this directory, you may receive an error message instructing you to uninstall SilkTest, make sure all files are removed, and then reboot and install SilkTest.

6 On the Setup Type dialog box, select one of the following installation options:• Click Next to install the full installation of SilkTest, including the

SilkTest Agent. The full installation enables you to record, script, execute, and view the results of tests.

• Select SilkTest Agent Only, then click Next if you only want to install the SilkTest Agent software. You can install just the SilkTest Agent on machines that are used for distributed testing.

• Select SilkTest Runtime, then click Next if you want to install SilkTest Runtime and the SilkTest Agent. You can use SilkTest Runtime to execute a set of tests and view the results.

Note We recommend that you install SilkTest and SilkTest Runtime on different machines. However, if you choose to install both products on the same machine, make sure to install them in the same folder to prevent having duplicate files on a single machine. If both products are installed on the same machine, uninstalling either SilkTest or SilkTest Runtime will uninstall both products, regardless of whether or not they are installed in the same folder.

7 On the SilkTest Products Selection dialog box, select the items you want to install, then click Next.

8 On the Start Copying Files dialog box, review your settings. Click Back if you want to modify any of your settings, otherwise click Next to continue with the SilkTest installation.

3 INSTALLING SILKTESTInstalling SilkTest, the SilkTest Agent, or SilkTest Runtime

Tip If a message is displayed stating that there is not enough space while files are copying, redefine the TEMP area to a drive that contains more space. The installer uses the TEMP area for unzipping files. For example, if your TEMP area is d:\temp and you are installing to e:\silktest, the E drive may contain enough space for the installation, but the D drive is the limiting factor.

9 Depending on your product selections and the platform on which you are installing, the Setup Program may display the following messages:

- If you are installing the Extension Kit, a message prompts you to enter your password. If you do not know your password, contact Customer Service at 781.402.6900.

- (SilkTest only) If you are installing on or Windows 98, a message is displayed indicating that Setup is inspecting the GDI32.DLL file in the Windows System directory. An informational window appears, indicating that after rebooting, Setup will modify GDI32.DLL in the Windows System directory and copy the original file to the Segue subdirectory of the Windows System directory. Take note of this information and click OK.

- (SilkTest only) If you are installing on , you may receive an error message saying the MSVCIRT.dll and/or the MFC42.dll file are missing. These files are available from Microsoft or from your MSDN subscription; copy them into your Windows System directory, then restart the SilkTest installation process.

10 Select the Java version installed on your machine, then click Next. 11 Select your default language for testing browsers. The browser Include

(.inc) file for the language you select will be installed to your <SilkTest installation>\Extend directory. All browser include files are installed in your <SilkTest installation>\Locale directory; to switch to another language later, see the online Help.

12 If you will be testing Web applications, verify your default browser, then click Next. If you want to specify a different default browser for SilkTest, select the appropriate browser. If you are not testing a Web application, select None, then click Next.

Note The Setup Program preselects the radio button in this dialog based on browser settings on your machine. (If you are using Internet Explorer, it displays only the version of IE installed on your machine.) The Setup Program uses this information to set the appropriate browser extension and let the recovery system know which browser it should invoke.

3 INSTALLING SILKTESTInstalling SilkTest, the SilkTest Agent, or SilkTest Runtime

For example, if your default browser is Internet Explorer 6.0, the Setup Program preselects Internet Explorer 6.x DOM (Document Object Model). Note that the default browser extension for IE 6.x is DOM; if you want to use the Virtual Object (VO) extension, you must select it. We recommend the DOM extension for new customers and the VO extension for existing customers who have not yet switched to the DOM extension. You can change your default browser at any time through the SilkTest Runtime Options dialog. Refer to the SilkTest online Help for instructions on changing your default browser or browser extensions after installation.

Note If your default browser is Internet Explorer 6.x, you may receive a message that your browser’s third-party extensions are not enabled. You must enable this option in order for SilkTest to recognize objects in browser pages. You can enable this option and then continue with the installation, or you can wait and enable the option after the installation is complete. To enable third-party browser extensions:

a) On the Tools Menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.

b) Click the Advanced tab. c) Under Browsing, select the Enable third-party browser

extensions (requires restart) check box, then click OK.d) Restart your browser by closing and reopening the browser

window. You do not have to reboot your computer for the new setting to take effect; just close and reopen the browser window.

12 On the SilkTest Results Logging window, click Next. This dialog is for informational purposes only and gives a brief introduction to the Results Repository installer and demonstration-only Results Viewer. For more information, see the online Help.

13 On the Select Program Folder dialog box, specify a program folder for SilkTest, or click Next to accept the default, SilkTest. Please wait while Setup updates the registry.

14 Click Finish to exit the InstallShield Wizard and restart your computer. You must reboot for SilkTest to work properly.

Note The SilkTest/SilkMeter communication process relies on the following:

Chapter 5 Configuring SilkPlan

Introduction

SilkPlan 7.0 is a comprehensive Test Management solution that includes new versions of SilkScheduler and SilkRadar that are closely integrated with SilkTest. SilkPlan also installs MSDE (Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine), which can be used as a local Test Management database.

You can access SilkPlan through the Windows menu by selecting Start > Programs > SilkPlan 7.0 > SilkPlan 7.0 Home Page. SilkPlan components can also be launched within SilkTest in embedded browser windows.

Connecting to a Test Management Database

About the Test Management Database

In order to run SilkPlan, you must connect to a Test Management database. To run SilkRadar, you must connect to an Issue Tracking database.

For this release, the Issue Tracking database is referred to as a repository. The terms “database” and “repository” are sometimes used interchangeably, but generally a repository is defined as a central place in which an aggregation of data or databases are kept and maintained. The conceptual model for SilkPlan is that of a data repository that contains the Issue tracking and Test Management databases. The Scheduling, Planning, Reporting, and Requirements components access the Test Management database. SilkRadar connects to the Issue Tracking database.

Creating a New Database

To create a new Test Management database:

1 Open the SilkPlan Web console by selecting Start > Programs > SilkPlan 7.0 > SilkPlan 7.0 Home Page.

2 Log in to the Web console (“segue” is the default value for both the username and password).

SilkPlan Installation Guide 31

5 CONFIGURING SILKPLANConnecting to a Test Management Database

3 On the Segue Web console, select Administration > System > Database.4 On the Database page, click Disconnect to disconnect from the current

database.5 Enter the information for the new database, then click Connect.

You can create a database on the locally installed MSDE (Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine), a locally installed MS-SQL Server, or on a network server that has MS SQL-Server installed. At this time, MS-SQL is the only type of database supported.

To create a local MSDE database, you would enter:

DBMS-hostname or IP-address: <machine name>\seguePort: 1433DBMS-type: MSSQL ServerUser: saPassword: saDatabase: <enter a name for the new database>

To create a database on a local or network MS-SQL Server, you would enter:

DBMS-hostname or IP-address: <machine name>Port: 1433DBMS-type: MSSQL ServerUser: saPassword: Database: <enter a name for the new database>

Note: if you installed the Evaluation version of SilkPlan, you should login as User “sa” -- with no password -- when creating a local MSDE database.

6 An error message will inform you that that the new database could not be found, and a yellow login box will be displayed at the bottom of the page. To create a new database, you must log in as System Administrator.

7 Log in as the System Administrator: • If you are creating a local MSDE database, type sa in both the Login and Password text boxes, then click Create.

• If you are creating a local or network MS-SQL Server database, type sa

Log in using your normal username and password (the default is segue/segue) -- do not log in as System Administrator.

Note: information about the currently connected database is displayed on the Database Administration page, but other available databases are not displayed anywhere in the SilkPlan user interface. You should make a note of the database name for future reference.

Connect to an Existing Database

Note: to connect to a new test management database, you must first disconnect from the current database.

To connect to an existing database:

1 Open the SilkPlan Web console by selecting Start > Programs > SilkPlan 7.0 > SilkPlan 7.0 Home Page.

2 Log in to the Web console (“segue” is the default value for both the username and password).

3 On the Segue Web console, select Administration > System > Database.4 On the Database page, click Disconnect to disconnect from the current

database.5 Enter the information for the database, then click Connect.

7 Log in to the Web console (“segue” is the default value for both the username and password). After you log in, you should have access to the SilkScheduler.

Getting Started with SilkScheduler

Introduction SilkScheduler is the scheduling component of the SilkPlan Test Management solution.

Tips • Use the SilkPlan menus and controls to navigate. For example, click the Cancel button at the top right of the page to cancel an action and return to the previous page. If you use your browser’s Back button, you may need to refresh the page -- and you would still need to use the Cancel button to cancel the action and return to the previous page.

• If you hold the mouse over a control icon, a ToolTip will be displayed that explains the control function.

Create a Test Definition

In order to schedule tests, you must first create a test definition. To create a SilkTest test definition:

1 Open the SilkPlan Web console by selecting Start > Programs > SilkPlan 7.0 > SilkPlan 7.0 Home Page.

2 Log in to the Web console (“segue” is the default value for both the username and password).

3 On the Segue Web console, select Scheduling > Overview > Projects.4 Select a project, then click the New Test Definition link at the top right of

the page. A default project is provided, but you can create your own projects by selecting Administration > Projects > Add New Project.

Note: you can also use New Folder to create a folder structure to organize your test definitions.

5 Enter the full path and name of you test source file, or click Browse to browse to select the file. This can be a SilkTest plan file (*.pln), script file (*.t) or suite file (*.s).

Tips: •When using the Browse button, make sure that the file you

reference is accessible not only from your local machine, but also from the application server (as this is the machine that will be accessing the file).

•When referencing sources on a network path (UNC), specify valid login credentials in the UNC User Name and UNC Password boxes. Specify the fully qualified user name, including domain (e.g., "segue/tester").

•If you select Use Sources Available at Runtime for Execution, SilkScheduler will NOT manage the sources in its database. It will use the specified path to access files on the execution server at runtime. Make sure that all dependent files are available on the execution server in the specified path.

6 Click Next to proceed to Step 2. Name is the only required field on this page, but there are many other useful options available. For more information, see the online Help.

7 Click Save to finish creating the test definition.

Important:

• In order to run successfully, the source file must include a reference to the applicable *.inc file. For example:

use "frame.inc"use "extend\explorer.inc"

If you're not sure what *.inc file you should reference, start SilkTest and select Options > Runtime to open the Runtime Options dialog. The *.inc files are listed in the Use Files box.

-OR-

• You can provide a reference to an options (*.opt) file in the Options Set File box when you create or edit the test definition in Scheduler. The options file contains the reference to the *.inc file. For more information about *.inc and *.opt files, see the SilkTest online Help.

Chapter 6 Configuring SilkTest

This chapter describes how to configure SilkTest 6.5.1.1 for SilkPlan 7.0.

Introduction

As a component of the SilkPlan 7.0 test management suite, SilkTest 6.5.1.1 is closely integrated with new versions of SilkScheduler and SilkRadar. SilkTest now provides the ability to import requirements documents from Microsoft Word into a Test Management database, and to dynamically update the database from Microsoft Word. SilkTest also now provides a manual test capability to help you create, edit, execute, and manage manual tests.

Set the SilkRadar and SilkScheduler URLs

Setting the Host Information

SilkTest includes embedded Web browsers that are used to display SilkRadar and SilkScheduler. In order for these embedded browsers to work, you must specify the URL (Web address) of SilkRadar and SilkScheduler.

To set the SilkRadar and SilkScheduler URLs:

1 In SilkTest, select Options > Host Info. 2 On the Host Info dialog box, enter the URL of your Radar and Scheduler

Web hosts, then click OK.

Tips: •If you are not sure what URL to use, open the SilkPlan Web

console, select Scheduling, then copy the URL displayed in the address bar and paste it into the SilkScheduler URL box on the SilkTest Host Info dialog box. You can use the same procedure to copy the URL of the SilkPlan Issue Tracking page into the SilkRadar URL box on the SilkTest Host Info dialog box.

Getting Started with SilkTest and SilkPlan

Introduction This section is designed to provide experienced SilkTest users with a brief introduction to the new features available in SilkTest as a result of the integration with the SilkPlan test management solution. More extensive information is available in the SilkTest online Help.

If you’re new to SilkTest, we recommend that you complete the SilkTest tutorials, available from Start > Programs > SilkTest > Documentation >SilkTest Tutorials.

Opening SilkScheduler from SilkTest

SilkTest includes an embedded Web browser that can be used to access SilkScheduler.

To open SilkScheduler in SilkTest:

1 In SilkTest, select Run > Schedule Tests.

The SilkPlan Web console login page will be displayed.

2 Log in to the Web console (“segue” is the default value for both the username and password).

3 After you log in, the Scheduling page will be displayed. You can use the Scheduling page to create test definitions and schedule test runs.

Run and Log All Tests You can use Run and Log All Tests to run all of the tests in a managed test plan and automatically create a SilkScheduler test definition.

Notes:

• Run and Log All Tests only works with managed test plans. To convert a testplan to a managed plan, select TestPlan > Convert to Managed Plan. The conversion process adds identifiers -- which are not visible in the managed plan -- that are used to communicate with the SilkPlan Test Management database. A managed plan can be used just like a standard plan, but can also utilize the expanded Silk Plan Test Management capa-bilities.

• A managed testplan has the label “Testplan [Managed]” displayed in the title bar of the testplan editor.

Requirements

This document provides a brief introduction to using Microsoft Word requirements documents with SilkPlan.

Working With Requirements

Introduction In order to use Microsoft Word requirements documents with the SilkPlan Test Management database, you must import Segue Styles into Microsoft Word, check the Word macro security setting, and then import the Segue Styles into a Word document.

Copy the Segue Styles Document Template

The Segue Styles are imported via an Microsoft Word document template file. The template (segue_styles.dot) is installed by default in the <name of directory> when you install SilkPlan.

1 Browse to the <name of directory>, then select and copy the segue_styles.dot. DO NOT OPEN THE FILE -- just use Windows Explorer to copy the file.

For early adopters: the template file is not currently installed with the product, but is available in the early access download area. Save the file to your Microsoft Templates directory.

2 Browse to your Microsoft Templates directory, typically C:\Documents and Settings\<your_name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates).

3 Paste in the copy of the segue_styles.dot.

Check the Microsoft Word Macro Security Setting

Before you can apply the segue_styles.dot to a Word document, you need to check the Microsoft Word macro security setting. The macro security setting should be set to Medium.

To apply SilkPlan styles to a new requirements document:

1 Open Microsoft Word, then click File > New. 2 Select the segue_styles.dot template, click File in the Create New box,

then click OK.3 Apply the "seg_" styles to paragraphs of text as you type or copy them

into the document.

To apply SilkPlan styles to an existing requirements document or template:

1 Open a document or template within MS Word.2 Click Tools>Templates and Add-Ins. 3 Click Attach, then navigate to segue_styles.dot.4 Select silkplan.dot, click Open, then click OK.5 Check Automatically update document styles to copy the SilkPlan styles

to your document, then click OK.

Note: you must manually apply the Segue styles to your existing requirements document.

Working with Segue Styles in Microsoft Word

After you load the Segue Styles, the Requirements toolbar is displayed. You can use the toolbar to apply Segue styles without having to scroll down the Microsoft Word Styles list. If you close the toolbar, you can reopen it by selecting View > Toolbars > SilkPlan.

There are nine styles supplied by the segue_styles.dot. You apply these styles to the paragraphs you want to save in the Test Management database. You cannot change the names of the Segue styles, but you can change font type, font size, color, etc. The SilkPlan styles are described in the table below.
