Note:
I reference and feature Dharma Trading in my
presentation, because they are reliable, have the best prices
on silk. They offer instruction online and a place to showcase the
work of hundreds of silk artists.
I do not represent them.

Serti technique: demo
Outline holds back the flow of the dye, like a ‘fence’.
Outline is then washed out> white outline = scarves
orOutline remains> silk hoops, paintings
Other techniques: ‘Ombre’
Aims for smooth gradations of color or
values Uses alcohol-based
medium
What we will do today:
Trace your circle on paperSketch your design: pencil, then
SharpiePencil the design onto your hoop
Design should define closed shapes
Think>stained glass
Gutta: a resist ‘fence’ Practice line-making on your hand
or a paper
Apply over your lines on silk Check backside for gaps, fill all gaps
Heat dry (I usually let dry overnight).
Paint! Touch brush to the silk> not at the line…about 1”
away….let it flow.
Heat-setting
Finishing:
Determine how your item will be used
Heat-settingWe won’t need to heat set our hoops.
If you choose to make scarves, the dye needs to be heat set, excess dye removed with Synthrapol…which will also wash
out the gutta.
I follow this by drying in a dryer for further heat.
