“There are many services that the library offers that I did not

know existed. When I started at UNA my freshman year, I did

not have to take the first English classes because of my AP exams (I went straight to taking the Lit classes my first semester). I feel

like the students that take the composition English classes get

a good overview about the library, but I missed out on that.

For a long time, I didn’t know about the online research databases that our library offers; I was still using the

Alabama Virtual Library! It was a bit overwhelming to go into

the library my first year at UNA. The library is extremely helpful and a vital source to students.”

“I wish that I knew the library had research consultations. I have been in many classes where I needed to write a paper that consists of multiple sources. If I had known about research consultations sooner, I could have had help finding sources and using the online library databases rather than spending time figuring it all out myself.”

Research Consultations allow students to consult one-on-one with a librarian to get in-depth assistance in library research. This includes identifying and locating the most useful sources of information for your paper, project, or assignment; effective web search strategies; and evaluating information sources. “I wish I had known to pay more attention to the orientation given in my freshman composition class and

remembered more of the information. English 111 and 112 are not the only

times you'll need to complete research for assignments! Remembering that information and not being afraid or

too 'independent' to use the library's resources would have made

researching so much easier.”

“I wish I knew how easy finding sources were through Collier Library’s online databases. Collier Library gives students access to research databases not only in the library but also from home. If you find the perfect article or book to use but

you cannot access it, you can request the library to get it for you and the library will contact you when it’s in. Research papers made easy!”

"I wish I knew more about the Librarians my first semester. It took me being forced to go to a Librarian for help on my research paper my second semester to actually see how helpful they were. For example, a Librarian helped find me 5 sources in a matter of 15 minutes which propelled me to make a 100 on my research paper that counted for 40% on my final grade. Don’t wait for someone to force you to go to the library, embrace and welcome all the great resources that Collier Library offers."

Collier Library professional librarians are available on-call at the library to help you find sources and use the library. You can reach a librarian in person, by phone, or online. To learn more visit the library’s homepage: www.una.edu/library

“When I first started at UNA I didn't know how many resources the library

offers; they provide access to books, ebooks, journal articles, audio visual resources, and news articles on any

subject I've ever needed. Also, if the library doesn't have a resource a

student needs, more than likely the library can borrow it from another

library if the student submits an Interlibrary Loan Request, that's saved my projects a time or two! My favorite

thing above all, though, is the study space: group spaces downstairs and

study rooms upstairs are great for group projects, and the individual

cubicles on the 2nd and 3rd floors are the best places on campus to work. I've

spent countless hours studying and working on projects in the library but I

didn't know I could do that until well into my sophomore year.”

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service for obtaining materials that are not available in the University of North Alabama libraries. Materials needed for study and research, such as books, government publications, and journal articles may be borrowed from other libraries. “I wish I knew more about the variety of resources available at the library. I could have utilized more sources provided by the library for my research papers in my English classes and my article summaries in my Elementary Education classes. The internet should not be your only option for sources.”

"I wish I would have used the research databases online more during my early years at UNA. As a commuter student, I wish I had known about all the different areas in the library and the ability to get a study room. The library is a great place to study, but I did not fully utilize it my Freshman year. ”

"As an underclassmen, I wish I had been better familiarized with the Research Consultation service offered by the Library. Research is one of the most difficult, tedious, and time-consuming tasks in academia. Having a convenient resource that offers assistance and guidance through this process can make research projects considerably less stressful. I owe a lot of my success to the research librarians. They are definitely among the University's unsung heroes.”
