Rainscreen cladding principles

Water penetration may occur through a building façade even after considerableeffort has been made to ensure the walls are fully sealed by the use of barriers, joints and sealants. Rain can be forced through the joints and openings of a typicalbuilding façade through the action of wind or via external and internal pressuredifferences.

Ventilated rainscreen cladding overcomes these potential problems by utilising thephenomena of pressure equalisation. The principle of pressure equalisation offeredby a rainscreen cladding system ensures the weathertightness of the buildingstructure by eliminating the methods of which rain may enter the façade.

Rainscreen cladding benefits

Developed as early as the 1940’s rainscreen overcladding came into widespreaduse in Europe and Canada in the 1970’s. It is a tried and tested concept backed upwith many years experience in the development of relatively easily installedlightweight systems that are currently available. The main benefits of a fullyintegrated rainscreen cladding system for both new build and refurbishment include:

Aesthetic improvement of the building façade with a wide choice of externalfinishes availableBuilding structure protected from weathering yet remaining vapour permeableIncreased thermal performanceExtremely cost effectiveEase of construction with none of the inconvenience associated with ‘wet’render trades

Rainscreen cladding construction

A ventilated rainscreen cladding system based upon pressure equalisation usuallycomprises of the following:

The outer rainscreen which:- provides the ‘finished look’ of the building- deflects rain and diverts water away from the cavity- transfers wind loading to the wall via a carrier rail systemThe inner cavity where:- any penetrating rain is drained away- insulation may be incorporatedThe primary airtight wall structure to which the appropriate carrier rail systemis mechanically fixed transferring wind loadings

There are numerous ways to which cladding finishes can be fixed to a carrier frame. This SikaTack® Panel Adhesive System was developed to allow the designer thefreedom to design façades without any unsightly fixings.

The permanent elastic nature of our SikaTack® Panel Adhesive System combinedwith a tenacious adhesion to a variety of panel substrate types, accommodates thenatural differential movements of varying building materials for the life of mostpanel types.

Rainscreen cladding protects abuilding against any weathercondition.

This ingenious and simple system offers both the designerand installer alike many advantages over comparable rigidmechanical secret fixing systems

SikaTack® Panel Adhesive System is suitable for thefixing of:

CompositeCeramicHigh pressure laminateCement based cladding panels

as well as most metal and powder coated substrates.

System components are:

Sika® Cleaner 205A surface conditioner, adhesion promoter and generaldegreaser for all non-porous substrates and claddingpanels.

SikaTack® Panel PrimerA unique single part epoxy polyurethane formulation. Itprovides a black UV stable surface, promotes adhesionand is suitable for use on porous and non-poroussubstrates.

SikaTack® Double Sided Adhesive TapeA 3mm thick charcoal black closed cell polyethylenetape. It is used for the temporary support for claddingpanels while the SikaTack® Panel Adhesive cures. Italso ensures the finished thickness of adhesive is at theoptimum required to accommodate differentialmovement of cladding elements, whilst preventingadhesive being exposed through the shadow gap.

SikaTack® Panel AdhesiveA moisture curing single component polyurethane resinbased adhesive, capable of withstanding extremedynamic loads and climatic conditions. It is supplied in310cc cartridges or 600cc foil bags. Once cured theadhesive remains permanently elastic to accommodatediffering thermal expansion of various buildingsubstrates. It eliminates stress fatigue at corners ofpanels and prevents cold bridging.

Elastic Bonding Technology

In figure 1 the mechanically fixed jointed elements are shown under load. Stresspeaks are clearly concentrated around the bolts leading to excessive straineventual bond failure. In figure 2 the jointed elements have been bonded with aSika® elastic adhesive. Under similar loading the stresses are evenly distributedalong the lap joint creating optimal bond performance over the total contactsurface.

Durability Testing - Wind and Static loadingThe system properties including ultimate bond strength and stress distributionhave been clearly established using independent testing authorities (OxfordBrookes University).

The performance of the SikaTack® Panel Adhesive System utilising wind loadingtesting procedures has produced results up to five times the maximum design load(Taylor Woodrow testing facilities).

The SikaTack® Panel Adhesive System is BBAcertificated (No. 05/4218) and deemed suitable for thefixing composite, ceramic, high pressure laminate orcements based rainscreen cladding panels.

Durability Testing - Weathering

A durability study carried out by Bouwcentrum Technology Limited in Holland inSeptember, tested panels bonded with SikaTack® Panel Adhesive System undera recognised accelerated testing regime. The adhesion of the SikaTack® PanelAdhesive System was scrutinised before and after the testing period andconcluded even after 60 days testing (simulating 40 years in service) noappreciable reduction in performance was noted.

Durability Testing - Fire Performance

Critical rainscreen cladding systems incorporate intumescent fire breaks effectivelyeliminating the spread of flame across the façade. When incorporated within sucha system the SikaTack® Panel Adhesive System has been tested and awarded aclass ‘O’ fire rating.

Quality Assurance

As part of ISO 9001/EN29001, the quality of the SikaTack® Panel AdhesiveSystem is constantly checked and monitored. Adhesion and durability testing maybe carried out upon request for varying types of cladding materials.

Installation

The carrier frame and other non-porous substrates are thoroughlycleaned and degreased using Sika®

Cleaner 205 and allowed to dry(approx 30 seconds).

Both the back of the rainscreenpanels and the carrier frame areprimed with SikaTack® PanelPrimer. Subsequent materials mustbe applied within 8 hours.

Next a 3mm thick charcoal blackdouble-sided tape is applied to theprimed carrier rail. This tapeprovides temporary support whilst theadhesive cures, controls adhesiveflow and final adhesive thickness tooptimise achieved performance.

A triangular bead of SikaTack® PanelAdhesive is applied by caulking gunthrough a pre-cut nozzle to the innermost edge of the double-sided tape.A minimum distance of 10mm shouldbe maintained from the tape.

The protection strip on the double-sided tape is then removed.

Position horizontal shadow gap trimsif specified taking care to remove thedouble-sided tape from behind thetrim.

Without delay, place the claddingpanels onto freshly appliedSikaTack® Panel Adhesive. Onceslight adjustments on position havebeen effected, press firmly ensuringfull contact with the double-sidedtape is achieved.

Ensure all panels are positionedwithin the time specified for bonding.Where necessary use packers toachieve the correct line and level.(Note: with heavy elements, additionaltemporary support may be required).

Once initial set has occurred, removeall temporary support and installationpackers.

Gatwick Hilton - Crawley

Large ceramic tiles were structurally bonded to the aluminium carrierrails using the SikaTack® Panel Adhesive System. Each tilemeasured 1.2m x 0.6m x 10mm and weighed approximately 24kgeach. No additional support to the Megaceram tiles was necessary.

Work was completed ahead of schedule and within budget.

The Martlets - Crawley

Here the SikaTack® Panel Secret Fixing System was used inconjunction with re-constituted stone cladding panels. Each panelweighed approximately 78kg. No additional support was necessaryduring the installation of the panels.

The finished appearance mimicked natural stone blocks but wassupplied and installed at a fraction of the price.

Bradley Stoke Swimming Pool

High pressure laminate panels were installed using SikaTack® PanelAdhesive System onto aluminium rails. The system was selected forits ease of application, long term durability in humid environmentsand un-interrupted lines due to secret fixing behind the panels.
