2017 Eaglemania Summer Program

Course Descriptions

Intro to Horse & Horsemanship Join us at Graystone Farm for a week filled with adventure! Graystone is, first and foremost, a horse farm. But Graystone is so much more! During the week, campers will have the opportunity to explore all of the exciting, fun and educational activities available on the farm. On their down time, campers can play games in the game room, enjoy time on the playground or visit our educational gardens featuring crops of North Carolina and even sample whatever is in season! Beginner Youth Tennis: “Get in the Game”. Using age appropriate balls, rackets, and court size, young players are introduced to the fundamentals of tennis and gain on-court experience and develop their basic tennis strokes. They are working to improve consistency in rallying the ball over the net. Players engage in a variety of play-based activities to help them develop playing strategies and HAVE FUN. Players should bring their own racket, water, and wear appropriate clothes and shoes . **Rainy Day Location: Class will be held at Western Rockingham Family YMCA 600 S 5th Ave, Mayodan, NC 27027 Intermediate Youth Tennis: “Get in the Game”. Young players have some tennis skills or have attended the BEGINNER Youth Tennis offering. Players continue to perfect basic tennis skills. They are introduced to the tennis game format and scoring, and they begin to develop an understanding of the game. Overhead serves and games-based drills are a focal point at this level. 10 & Under players use balls and rackets that are appropriate to their size and play on smaller courts. . Players should bring their own racket, water, and wear appropriate clothes and shoes. **Rainy Day Location: Class will be held at Western Rockingham Family YMCA 600 S 5th Ave, Mayodan, NC 27027

High School Tennis: “Get in the Game”. Group clinics for players in grades 9-12 who have intermediate to advanced skills. High School Tennis team players welcome. This is a great time to work on stroke development, footwork and agility, as well as matchplay and strategy with Coach Caleb Shelton. Players should bring their own racket, water, and wear appropriate clothes and shoes.

**Rainy Day Location: Class will be held at Western Rockingham Family YMCA 600 S 5th Ave, Mayodan, NC 27027 Duct Tape Art: “Colorful, Wonderful You”! What’s your favorite color and what does it say about you? In this interactive class, we’’ll explore the meaning of color and use colored duct tape to create a mosaic silhouette portrait of you! Rocketry 101 Do you want be an aspiring Astronaut or Engineer? Come and check out the world of rocketry? Students will learn about what makes a rocket go! We will build and launch a water rocket and a solid fuel one, too!! Cosmetology for Kids Do you like to style hair or do nails? During this camp participants will learn the art of hair color and the importance of the color wheel. We will go over proper ways to apply makeup and nail polish and learn different types of hand massages. Students will learn three different types of braids. There will be no use of scissors, curling irons, hair dryers or any type of cosmetic equipment that could present a danger to the campers. GELS (Girls Experiencing & Learning Science) This course will teach girls that science and technology are for everyone, not just the guys. We will show them how science is a process, not just a school subject, as we dabble in geology, life science, basic chemistry and rocketry.

Electronics and Circuits This course is designed for junior high or high school students that are interested in the world of electronics. This course will cover electronic components, series, and parallel circuits. CSI Dive into the world of forensics as you learn what the work of a Crime Scene Investigator is all about. Musical Theatre (2 Weeks) Learn acting principles, stage techniques, auditioning skills, dance, and music. Professional instructors will guide participants through group activities and skits. A musical production will be presented at the end of the session. (Two week session) Muffin Mania Mix and bake small and large muffins, delicious and nutritious. Special fillings, frostings, fruit, and nuts. Rockin’ Guitar Students will learn power chords, notes, note reading, tablature, how to play with others. Must bring your own appropriate-sized guitar. Can be acoustic, electric with a small amp, or bass guitar and small bass amp. Science Adventure Experience a potpourri of science adventures. From hunting for fossils to digging for minerals and seeing and hearing things go “Pop” in the chemistry lab. We will explore nature and the human senses, and so much more. Drones! What are they REALLY? This class will cover the different types of drones, and their various parts. We will also discuss careers which use drones and how they are used in a business setting. There will even be some hands-on drone experience for each participant. All topics will be taught with an emphasis on safety.

Soldering Skills This course is intended to teach basic soldering skills to high school students who are interested in electronics and circuits. Students will learn basic electronic components and assemble a circuit board.

Robotics and Automation This course is intended for middle and high school students who are interested in how robots are used in automation. Students will have the opportunity to program robots, including the Baxter Robot. We will include CNC automation.

Raspberry Pi The Raspberry Pi is the credit card sized computer that changed the world. It is Linux-based and is perfect for tinkering or learning to program. Students will have the opportunity to learn about and program a Raspberry Pi. Cooking for Kids The course will cover safety in the kitchen, food prep, lunch, desserts, and there will be a lunch for the parents on that Thursday! Hand Sewing and More Bring a spool of thread, a thimble and any scraps of fabric you may have and learn how to create with these simple materials and your own hands! “Winning” Science Fair Projects Find out how to deal with the science fair project. Learn about basic ideas, conclusions, and how to create a great science project without the usual pitfalls and difficulty which so often accompany it.

2017 EAGLEMANIA PAYMENT AND POLICIES

Registration Procedures: 1. Select the Eaglemania session(s), based upon grade level/age. 2. Complete the registration form and emergency medical information. This form must be

signed by the parent or guardian. 3. To secure placement in a session, the payment fee must accompany the completed

registration form. All sessions are open on a first come, first served basis. Limited enrollment.

4. Payment Options: If paying by check, make checks payable to Rockingham Community College. Visa and Master Card Credit Cards are accepted.

Camper(s) are expected to arrive at the classroom no more than 10 minutes before the start of a session and should be picked up promptly when the session ends. Students must remain in the classroom until parent or guardian arrives for pick up. Campers who are participating in morning sessions only must be picked up by a parent or guardian by the end of class. Canceled Courses, Changes, and Refunds: The right to cancel any session due to low enrollment is reserved by the college. In the event a session is canceled, all fees will be refunded. Notification of any session cancellation will occur within a week before the session start date. Refunds will not be issued after start of classes. Confirmation Package: Confirmation packages will be sent one week before the session begins. Each session will be assigned a classroom number and building. A campus map with the location of your session will be included. Supply lists will be included as well. *Lunch: No lunch service is available. However, if your child attends a morning and afternoon session on the same day and stays on campus during the lunch break, please provide a snack and drink. Supervision will be provided. Discipline: The right to dismiss a camper from a session if he or she demonstrates a behavioral or attendance problem is reserved by the instructor. Cell phones are not permitted in classrooms. Safety: Instructors are not responsible for campers outside of the session time. It is important that you have your campers in the designated classrooms on time and pick them up on time at the close of each session or at the end of the day.
