1.0 Introduction

This Sign Manual contains a concise record of the information relating to the graphics and manufacture of the LSE sign system.

It incorporates detailed guidelines for laying out the sign graphics and re-producing the maps, plus lift and building diagrams.

This Manual will enable suppliers to produce signs for the LSE to exact specifications ensuring continuity across the entire sign family.

With this Manual is a CD containing an electronic copy of the Manual which includes fonts, graphic elements, templates and manufacturing drawings.

Issue 6: 14.06.2010

2.0 Graphic elements

All the graphic elements needed to create the LSE signage can be found in folder '01 Graphic Elements' on the accompanying CD and includes:

• Fonts

• Logos

• Arrows

• Pictograms

Issue 6: 14.06.2010

2.1 Logos The LSE logo is the main branding symbol for the School and it is important to ensure consistency that the vectored logo supplied on the CD should be used.

Either the full or abbreviated logo may be used in the colour ways shown below.

It is important to keep the LSE logo clear of any other graphics. The minimun clear space or exclusion zone around the logo is shown below.

The logos shown below are supplied with this Manual: CD: 01 Graphic Elements > LSE Logos

2.2 Typeface Frutiger is the LSE corporate typeface and should be the only typeface used in the sign system. Three Frutiger weights have been chosen to establish a visual message hierachy and should generally be used as follows:

Frutiger Light 45: used for secondary and or supporting messages

Frutiger Roman 55: informtion text

Frutiger Bold 65: destinations or headline text

The use of upper and lower case should be applied across all information signage.

The controlled use of typeface and text weights will ensure consistency is maintained throughout the School.

Refer to individual sign type drawings in Sections 5.0 and 6.0 for specifications regarding text heights and positioning.

The fonts shown are supplied with this Manual: CD: 01 Graphic Elements > Fonts

Issue 6: 14.06.2010

2.3 Typography Both the internal modular sign system and exterior signage allows for a certain amount of flexibility and freedom of text size and layout, so an assessment must be made regarding text size and viewing distance of the sign plus space available.

Legibility

In addition to type size, distinctive shape is an important factor for legibility. Therefore type should be set in both upper and lower case, because people read primarily by word shape. The first letter of each key word should always begin with a capital letter.

Letter spacing

All typesetting should be done in Adobe Illustrator with normal tracking, characters to be individually letter spaced where required.

The correct use of capitals. Having a capital letter at the beginning of words helps in defining a unique shape and definition, this will improve legibility even for people with blurred vision.

Issue 6: 14.06.2010

2.4 Arrows Only the arrow shown below is to be used in the sign system. The arrow should rotate about its axis in the seven directions shown below.

Arrows should be applied in consistent zones to ensure clarity of the message. They should always be in close proximity to the message they refer to, so that there is no ambiguity.

120% x

In most applications the weight or thickness of the arrow stroke should be the same as the weight of the relevant capital letter. Refer to individual sign type drawings for specifications regarding proportion, colour and positioning.

The arrows shown are supplied with this Manual: CD: 01 Graphic Elements > Arrows

Issue 6: 14.06.2010

2.5 Pictograms The use of pictograms where appropriate can be beneficial to a sign system as they are understood by a variety of user groups. The International Standard pictograms should be used on both the external and internal signage as they offer a wide range of proven legible and recognisable options. Refer to individual sign type drawings for specifications regarding proportion and positioning.

When pictograms are used in conjunction with running text they appear within a box, when used in isolation on a sign they can be reversed out.

The icons shown below are supplied with this Manual: CD: 01 Graphic Elements > Pictograms

Issue 6: 14.06.2010

2.6 Colour specifications The signage colour scheme uses the existing School colour palette of red, black and white plus the use of silver and a palette of Pantone Cool Grays. All colours should be approved before manufacture. It is generally applied as follows:

Pantone 485

Vinyl: 3M 220-253

RAL 3020

Black

Vinyl: 3M 220-12

RAL 9017 semi-gloss

Metallic silver

Vinyl: 3M 220-120

RAL: 9006 Silver 600 line with matt base coat

White

Vinyl: 3M 220-10

RAL 9003 semi-gloss

Red: Pantone 485 primarily used for the School logo, as a high-light colour and to reinforce the LSE brand on directional signage.

Black: primarily used for the School logo if required.

White: primarily used for text on dark backgrounds.

Grey: Cool Grey 11 primarily used for text and building sign backgounds. Also used with a secondary palette of Pantone Cool Grays on mapping.

Metallic silver: primarily used as the background colour on the internal signage.

Issue 6: 14.06.2010

2.7 Disability Discrimination Act compliance

To comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) the following should be considered and or applied:

All public accessible endpoints should be tactile.

Toilets should have both tactile and Braille information.

All lift and stair level identification signs should be tactile.

Stair level identification signs should be placed on the side of the hand rail, if there are rails on both sides then they should be installed on the right.

When Braille is used it should be Grade 1, this is a letter for letter transcription which can be read by all Braille users.

Braille should be placed below any text or pictogram and ranged left. A raised locator on the left hand side of the sign should be provided.

Signs should be placed on the leading edge of the door.

Signs should be installed where possible on a hanging line of 1500mm above floor level to ensure all tactile information is accessible.

The DDA report for the LSE sign system can be found in Appendix iii.

3.0 Wayfinding overview

The wayfinding system has been designed to lead the visitor from the Campus edge to an individual room, displaying only the level of information required at that decision point.

Externally it is map based with directional signs placed strategically around the campus to reassure the visitor negotiating the School Campus.

Internally it is direction based with room numbering allocated in logical blocks, using the building layout and architecture to provide suitable sequenced areas.

All the sign plans and schedules can be found in folder '06 Sign Plans Schedules' on the accompanying CD.

Issue 6: 14.06.2010

3.1 Address and coding

Pre-visit informationIt is vital to ensure that the same map, terminology, instructions and systems are used across all media.

Any information sent to visitors or obtained when on the site, e.g. hand held maps, will also need to be the same as what the potential visitor can obtain over the internet.

Address systemA standard address system should be implemented with a clear hierarchy on information adopted

To address the range of user groups and their information needs, various levels of information should be provided to take them from the boundary of the Campus to their destination. These are as follows:

External signs

Gateways – GAT

Placed at the main access points to the LSE, these signs will carry the brand and affirm to visitors that they have arrived at the School and give an important first impression of the LSE. They define the School boundaries.

Navigation points – NAV

These elements of the sign system are located around the boundary of the School. They provide not only detailed Campus information but also provide information such as Underground stations for visitors leaving the LSE.

Directionals – DIR

As people move around the site they will need reassurance and confirmation that they are moving in the right direction.

Campus maps – CAM

Campus maps should be positioned externally at the main entrances to each building. This provides wayfinding information for people leaving one building and looking for their next destination.

Building ID – BID

Clearly visible building ID signs aid people in reaching the building they are looking for. These simply confirm that people have arrived at the correct building.

Internal signs

Entrance ID – EID

The entrance signs will act as reassurance to let people know what building they are in and act as welcome signs which will carry the LSE brand.

Level directories – LDIR/SDIR

These directories will be situated at building entrances and / or by lift doors and some stairs.

The directory informs people of what department, room, facility etc is on each floor, as well as highlighting what floor a visitor is currently on.

3.2 Sign trail

Level IDs – LID

A level ID will let people know what level they are on. They may take different forms depending on where they are located. These could be:

at the top and bottom of stairs there will be a requirement to state which floor people have reached.

level ID's may also be used as people exit from a lift or enter a building from a bridge, therefore a level ID can be combined with a directional sign.

Directional – DIR

Directional information will be present where relevant and will direct people to room numbers and information about spaces that is unlikely to change.

Room ID – END

Room IDs will take a number of forms depending on the type of room or space, this is detailed in Section 5 of this manual.

Issue 6: 14.06.2010

3.3 Internal room numbering The allocation of simple, readily-understood room numbering is an essential element of the wayfinding system, to guide the user to the correct end point. Examples of good room numbering can often be found in hotels.

Architectural building numbers

Architectural plans will include room numbers, however, in the case of new construction the architect will allocate ‘building numbers’ for every space in the building. This exhaustive numbering is required during building works but is overly detailed and cumbersome for day-to-day use once the building becomes operational.

Spaces to omit from room numbering

The final room numbering sequence should omit services/ducts/corridors/lobbies and similar spaces, all of which carry building numbers but which interrupt or confuse the consistent flow of the main operational sequence.

Room numbering

The room numbering system should reflect the same fundamental principles for all School buildings so that a common approach and understanding applies across the entire LSE estate:

the first digit of the room number indicates the floor/level

allocation of numbers should start from the most immediately obvious space at point of entrance to a building or arrival on a floor

numbering should be in a clockwise direction around clearly defined circular routes or zones

in corridors – numbering should be in street numbering fashion i.e. across and down the corridor rather than consecutive numbers along one side, then the other

Toilets should be included.

Numbering across floors

Numbering allocation across floors is single sequence per floor i.e. each floor starts again at 1, differentiated by the floor identifier prefix i.e. G.01, 1.01, 2.01...

While acknowledging all the above, it should be remembered that room numbering is there to assist wayfinding. Ultimately it is more important to have an allocation that is clear and workable for the majority of users and visitors than one that slavishly imposes a system that may seem logical on paper but creates confusion in situ!

3.4 Residential wayfinding Rationale

User journey

By also considering the different users of the building (from students to summer visitors) and their possible journeys through the buildings, a system that will be functional and usable can be implemented. Users must be supported throughout their whole journey, from the point at which they arrive outside a building, to when they leave the building.

Sign family

The sign family will provide the necessary information at each point at which people will have to make a decision about which way to turn. These decision points have been illustrated on the diagram to the right and are points at which signage should be visible from. The diagram is an example of a journey from outside High Holborn to a flat on the 1st floor.

ground floor 1st floor

This section will provide LSE with the necessary tools to implement a signage system in all residential buildings.

Consideration should be given to various uses of the areas within the buildings, as well as how they differ during term time and the summer.

Issue 6: 14.06.2010

3.4 Residential wayfinding Sign location plan & schedule

In order to equip a sign manufacturer with the relevant information, it is important to provide them with information about where the signs will go and what they will say. These two pieces of information must be developed together and they are known as a sign location plan and a schedule. An example of these can be found below.

The sign location plan shows the sign types differentiated by colour and shape (shown in the key), each with their own number. No number should be used twice within a building as this can cause confusion.

The numbers then relate to the schedule which shows the room on the plans, the sign type and the message to be written on the sign. The sign types can be found on the following pages.

The sign family simplifies the process of selecting signs for use. There are rules attached to the signs in terms of when they should be used and positioning. The signs and their usage is outlined on the following pages. Specifications for the sign types can be found in Sections 5 and 6.

Building ID – BID-1 & BID-w3

Purpose Clearly visible building ID signs aid people in reaching the building they are looking for. They confirm that people have arrived at the correct building.

Positioning Building ID's should be clearly visible from all approaches to the building. They should be able to be seen above peoples' heads and any cars parked in front of the building.

Entrance ID – EID

Purpose The entrance signs will act as reassurance to let people know what building they are in and act as welcome signs which will carry the LSE brand.

Positioning Entrance ID's must be visible as people enter the building lobby and not placed where objects may be positioned in front of them.

Level directories – LDIR/SDIR

Purpose These directories will be situated at building entrances if this is considered relevant and by lift doors. They will give people information about which floor they require. If stairs are a primary way of moving between floors, then these signs should be located in the relevant stairwells. Level directories are not necessary for back stairs as these are generally used by people who know the building well.

Positioning Level directories should be positioned so that they are visible in the lift (or stair) areas. They can be visible both when you enter or exit the lift, depending on what space is available.

Level IDs – LID

Purpose A level ID will let people know what level they are on.

Positioning Level ID's will mostly be located at the top and bottom of stairs to state which floor people have reached. Level ID's may also be used as people exit from a lift or enter a building from a bridge, and in these instances a level ID can be combined with a directional sign.

Directional – DIR / DIR2

Purpose Directional information will be present at key decision points in a person's journey. These will mostly be found in corridors and at the exit points from lifts and stairs. They will direct people to room numbers and information about spaces that is unlikely to change (e.g. computer rooms, kitchens). Directional signs are not relevant for small areas such as within flats, as it will not take people long to search for the room they are looking for.

Positioning These signs should be positioned so that it is clear which direction the visitor should go in. If they must go through doors, the signs can be positioned on the wall next to the door or on the door if there is not sufficient space.

Room ID – END-R7 / FID-1

Purpose Room IDs will take a number of forms depending on the type of room or space. These are outlined below:

FID-1: These signs are used for any room that has a set purpose, for example; kitchen, computer room, library, study room, laundry, flat number. They will be tactile.

END-R7: These signs will be used for flat and room numbers within flats. They will be tactile.

Positioning FID-1: When these signs are to be viewed by the public they should ideally be positioned on the wall on the handle side of the door. If this will cause confusion with another door or there is no space, they should be placed on the door. For back of house signs (e.g. store, staff rooms) signs should be placed on the door.

END-R7: These signs will be place on the relevant door.

been specified for endpoints including toilets, seminar and lecture theatres. Stair and lift signage will also have to have tactile level information.

Illustrated below are the main sign types with reference codes for the internal sign system.

The internal signage is a bespoke system designed to suit the needs of the LSE, but incorporates elements of the Modular Sign System (MSS) and on some signs the APCO Notifier product. Full details for manufacturing the signs are on the following pages

In line with best practice, tactile signage will have to be incorporated into the system, which will mean the anodised finish to be sprayed silver. Tactile panels have

LID: Level ID

DIR-2: Directional with level id

FCL: Fret-cut individual letters

END-R1: Room ID with A4 paper carrier

END-R2: Room ID with quater A4 paper carrier

FID-1: Facilities door sign

FID-2: Facilities number

INS: A4 or A3 instruction holder

FID-3: Internal CCTV

5.2 Positioning guide It is important that the signs be installed to a consistent standard of height and alignment. Each building will have its own particular architectural and decorative features and these should be taken into consideration when establishing sign positions. The illustration below shows typical examples and should be used as a guide only.

Where possible the following should be taken into consideration:

Signs to be placed at 1600mm high to allow accessibility to tactile information.

Room signs should be placed on leading edge of door 80mm from architraves, apart from the utilities signs (i.e. electrical riser) which should ideally be placed on the actual door.

Stair signage to be placed on the same side as the handrail or if not possible – then on the right going up the stairs.

III DDA report Below is the DDA report is produced by June Bretherton and David Whitehead of JBC – London 26 June 2008

This is a report on the accessibility of suggested signage being prepared by FW Design for LSE.

It is based upon the examples we have been shown for:

A. Internal sign system B. Navigation point maps C. Campus maps

A. Internal Sign System

i Overall size/positioning – The signs are a good size to carry the required information and are to be positioned at an acceptable height.

ii Siting – Given the constraints of the building (e.g. glass walls), it would appear that the signs are being placed as well as can be expected. Directional signage from the well-appointed lifts is as good as it can be in difficult circumstances, but the signs themselves are good.

iii Door Sign 1 Utility areas Signage to toilets and similar facilities are accessible and contain all necessary raised information plus Braille.

2 Doors signs (a) Tonal Contrast – Good, being a combination of red, silver and dark grey. These tones and colours lend contrast, definition and do not cause glare or halo affect.

(b) the ‘room identification number square’ (e.g. G.12)

is well placed at the top left-hand side and, being raised out of the plate and holding further raised letters and numbers lends well to those looking at and/or needing to feel the information. The use of bright red on this box with white figuring is very good.

(c) The title of the rooms stands out well tonally (grey on silver) and is tactilely acceptable. Letters are of a good size and distanced well. We were pleased to note that they used upper and lower case.

(d) Changing Information Panel – Would appear to be sufficiently large to take reasonably sized printed information, which we hope will be provided in large clear font and tonal contrasted paper/lettering.

B. Navigation Point Maps

i These, we understand, are to be placed strategically on walkways at a height suitable both to pedestrians and wheelchair users. We suggest that they are tilted at an angle of around forty degrees to lend maximum access.

ii Overall size – sufficient to allow for useful/necessary information and adequate font size.

iii Tonal contrast – clear and non-glare. We were pleased to see that black/white combinations are not used.

(a) Roads are clearly shown in white and allow for dark grey (cool grey 11) labelling to be seen easily.

(b) Lettering – Font and size are good.

(c) Identification of pavements and walkways in mid-grey is very useful.

(d) Reverse contrast of dark grey buildings with white lettering is equally clear.

(e) Use of colour to depict other areas is very good (i.e. green for ‘Field area’.

(f) These maps are extremely useful as they position the user both in terms of the Campus and the area around, clearly identifying arrival and departure options.

(g) Red Border – denotes position of map and lends corporate unity.

C. Campus Maps

We understand that these 300mm square maps are to be wall mounted on the buildings and repeat the Campus information from the navigation maps. They are a very sensible idea. The contrasts, size, fonts, etc. are all the same as those for the Navigation Point maps and are as accessible as possible. It is important that they are sited or finished in an anti-glare manner.

D. Recommendation

We would recommend that ‘books of raised maps’ to be produced and be provided to those needing them. These would then be portable and able to be studied at the convenience of the user in friendly environments. Creating such maps is not a direct replication of the original map and should be created by a specialist. We can recommend several experts in this field.

IV Statutory signage All safety/statutory signs relating to equipment or behaviour e.g. electrical riser, no smoking etc. must comply with BS 5499 standards.

Signs should only be installed after consultation with the LSE Fire/Health and Safety Officer.

CCTV Signs

The public needs to be aware that they are entering an area that is being monitored by CCTV surveillance equipment. Signs should be placed so that they are clearly visible and legible. The size of the sign will vary according to the circumstances of its location.

Signs need to contain the identity of whoever is responsible for the scheme, its purpose and their contact details. There are only a few exceptional circumstances where signs can not be used, such as investigating specific criminal activity. The exact wording on LSE CCTV signs should be checked with the relevant authority before manufacture.

Positioning signs

Signs must be sufficiently large and clear, durable, secured, and properly maintained to ensure they remain visible.

Install signs at a suitable height and in the line of sight, either at the entry to an area of general hazard, or in the immediate vicinity of a specific hazard.

Avoid placing too many signs too close together as this can cause confusion or reduce their effectiveness. The number of signs used in any one location should be kept to a minimum.

Safety signs should not be located in areas where colour contrast is poor.

If circumstances change and a hazard no longer exists, any redundant signs are to be removed.

All safety signs must be properly maintained (e.g. cleaned, tested for audibility or visibility), so as to perform their intended function.

When combining signs a gap of 10mm should be left between each plaque. Door signs should be positioned in the following order of priority, top to bottom: • Fire safety • Prohibition • Warning • Mandatory • Information

Purchasing signs

When purchasing signs from a manufacturer it should be ascertained, where applicable, that the product conforms to the Health & Safety Signs Regulations 1996 and/or BS5378 & BS5499. The signs should be enamelled aluminium unless they are to be applied to glass when a self adhesive printed vinyl may be used.

See 'Appendix I' for suppliers.

Further information can be found at www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg184.htm where there is an HSE free leaflet summarizing the legal position.
