Alpha Phi Omega Chapter announces Rush Schedule for Spring 2016 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, May 11, 2015 ELON, NORTH CAROLINA The Elon University chapter of Alpha Phi Omega has announced the chapter’s changes in Rush schedule and frequency. The Sigma Rho chapter will only be hosting Spring Rush in the 20152016 academic year. In past years, the organization has hosted rush events in both fall and spring semesters. Alpha Phi Omega Spring Rush will be held the week of March 711. Potential new members are required to attend one of three information sessions and are encouraged to attend additional activities in order to determine if Alpha Phi Omega will be a good fit for them. This change comes after several large pledge classes for the past few semesters. The organization has found a lot of success in recent years with gathering large pledge classes, but their new aim is to value quality over quantity. “Over the past four years, our organization has grown immensely. While this is certainly a positive thing, this growth has led to certain organizational problems. The APO executive board, therefore, expressed concerns that our organization was growing at an unsustainable rate. By transitioning to a single rush each year, we hope to ensure that APO remains an organization that can exist well into the future, serving the needs of all of our brothers and of the Elon community in general,” says Jill Hanna, Alpha Phi Omega member since Fall 2012. Alpha Phi Omega was originally chartered on the Elon University campus on June 10, 1967 as the Sigma Rho chapter. Since then, the chapter has given countless volunteer hours back to the Elon and Burlington communities. Currently, the chapter has grown to more than 250 members. For more information on Alpha Phi Omega’s Spring Rush, please contact Pledge Educator Ryan Lewis at [email protected].

Backgrounder

Alpha Phi Omega was founded on December 16, 1925, at Lafayette College in

Easton, Pennsylvania, by Frank Reed Horton. Horton was a former Boy Scout and

wanted to create an organization for college students to continue the ideals of scouting

at the collegiate level.

Horton hoped that the service done by members of Alpha Phi Omega would

expand to help people in need everywhere and do service on each campus where there

was a chapter. Horton created the organization with the ideals of Friendship,

Leadership, and Service at its foundation. These values have been instilled at over 350

chapters throughout the country, including the Sigma Rho chapter at Elon University.

As a pledge of the Sigma Rho chapter, requirements include completing 15

service hours, 15 brother interviews, one executive interview, one advisor interview,

attendance at all pledge meetings, and an 85% combined average on pledge quizzes.

Active brother requirements include attending chapter meetings (unless excused) and

completing 25 service hours throughout the semester.

The Sigma Rho chapter strives to serve the campus, the community, and the

nation. APO brothers volunteer on campus at Safe Rides and Campus Kitchen and at

various offcampus locations in Alamance County such as Habitat:Restore, the

Burlington Animal Shelter, and the Boys and Girls Club just to name a few.

Brothers in the Sigma Rho chapter are also very passionate about fellowship

events. Some past events include laser tag outings, intramurals, movie nights and

formals.
