The mathematical problems of fortification1. BECK ER ( VON HERVOR D), Peter. With an engraved allegorical title-page, a letterpress title-page, 7 engraved plates (5 folding), 3 engraved illustrations in the text and 3 folding tables. Contemporary vellum. € 3500

Rare Dutch translation of a work on fortification giving a very detailed description of the mathematical problems encountered in designing and building fortifications. It was originally published in German in 1664 by the German military engineer Peter Becker. The translation is dedicated to Prince William Hendrik of Nassau. The engraved title-page shows workmen with tools and plans facing a female figure, while a child or putto and an ape sit drawing. The ape may be a joke alluding to the informal Dutch name for a pantograph, which translates as “drawing ape”.A very good copy.

Atlas volume with 54 aquatint plates, all double-page except 3 folding plates and 2 single-page. Contemporary half sheepskin parchment. € 1250

Second edition of the Italian translation of a work on military and civil architecture, written by the French engineer Bernard Forest de Bélidor (1698–1761) and translated by Luigi Masieri. The book opens with a preface to the present edition, a preface by the author and a table of contents. It is divided into six parts, dealing with the theory of mechanics, masonry and the construc-tion of vaults and arches, properties of materials (including for the first time the soil), planning and construction of urban and military service buildings, decoration and ornaments (an entire section is devoted to the five orders of columns), surveying and estimated costs. With some occasional foxing in both volumes and a faint water stain in the second half of the atlas volume. Bindings rubbed along the extremi-ties, with a tear along the spine of the text volume. Otherwise in good condition.

Third edition of a work on the defence of fortresses by the French mathematician Guillaume le Blond (1704–1781). He comments on the proper munitions, preparations for a siege, the defence of different types and different parts of fortresses and how to defend small or unfortified villages. Included at the end is a list with difficult terms used in the main text, all briefly explained. It is followed by a more general dictionary, with terms used in warfare and military architecture. The first edition was published in 1743 and the second in 1762.Binding rubbed along the extremities, slightly worn at the head and foot of spine and corners.

Three volumes on attacking and defending fortifications

8º. Contemporary half calf, gold-tooled spines. € 200

Three volumes of the enlarged and corrected second edition of a work on the attack and defence of fortifications, by Henri Jean-Baptiste de Bousmard (1749–1807), dedicated to the King of Prussia. “In exile at Wiesbaden ... [Bousmard] occupied himself for four years in the composition of his Essai général de fortification, probably the best existing view of the whole subject, as its clear and lively style renders it also one of the most readable books in the engineer’s libary” (Yule).Lacking here are the first volume and the Atlas volume with 62 plates. Bindings rubbed along the extremities. Otherwise in very good condition.

Richly illustrated instruction manual on fortification8. Nouvelle edition.Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert, 1742. Large 4º (24.5 × 18.5 cm) With an engraved frontispiece, 7 engraved vignettes and 50 folding engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf, richly gold-tooled spine. € 750

Revised third edition of an extensive manual on the science of fortification, written by a professor of math-ematics at the artillery school at La Fère. In this richly illustrated book, the author describes the construction, attack and defence of both regular and irregular for-tresses, according to the methods of various authors including Vauban, Coehoorn, Deville and Pagan. Deidier’s treatment of the science of fortification is highly methodical, for instance making a distinction between attacking places by surprise, by force or by famine and even devoting a section (with an illustra-tion) to “the attack on a fort surrounded by marshes which can only be approached from the dykes or causeways” (p. 269). This third edition adds two short accounts of the Sieges of Namur (1692) and Lille (1708).Binding worn at the extremities with the top of the spine damaged, text slightly browned and with some spots, a small tear in plate 31; a good copy.

Sieges of various cities in Flanders, with 25 folding engraved plates11. [FUNCK, Jakob and Marc Guérard D’ILLENS]. Strasbourg and the Hague, Pierre Gosse junior, 1750. 4º. With 25 folding engraved maps with some hand-coloured details. Contemporary vellum. € 1250

First edition, Gosse issue (one of two simulta-neously published issues), of a richly illustrated account of sieges of Flemish towns during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748). The two authors, Jakob Funck and Marc Guérard D’Illens, both captain in the French army, dedicated the book to the French minister of War, the Count of Argenson. The book is divided into 24 “journals”, each describing the siege of a different town in Flanders in chronological order, starting at the siege of Menin in 1744 and ending with Maastricht in 1748. Each journal has its own folding plate, showing a ground plan of the besieged city and its fortifications with the “plan des attaques” high-lighted in yellow. Included after the preliminar-ies is a table with a survey of the besieged towns, with the dates of the sieges, the days the battles took place, and the names of the leaders of the attacking and defending army. With only a few small spots and some occasional marginal thumbing. Binding somewhat stained. A very good copy.

Drilling the Austrian Imperial infantry, with 49 manuscript formation plans in colour14. Herrn Obrist Wacht M[ei]st[er] Baron v[on]: Engelhard.Austria, 1769[?]. Oblong 4º (18.5 × 23 cm). With title and the explanation of the key letters used in the plans written in red, the key to the colour coding in the troop formations in 8 colours, and 49 (of 55) numbered colour-coded plans of infantry exercises. Each text leaf and each plan (except no. 26) in a frame of rules, nos. 2–35 in red, the rest in black. Plans 1, 24, 32, 33, 42, and 46 have been torn out, in 2 cases leaving a small piece of the drawing. Contemporary mottled tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine. € 5000

Fascinating and graphically rich military manuscript in German with 49 colour-coded plans of infantry exercises for the Imperial Royal Austrian army, based on the manual Militaire Regulament für gesammte Kaiserl. Königliche Cavalerie-Regimenter in Betreff des Exercitii zu Pferd und zu Fuss (published by Trattner in 1765 with only 9 engraved plates). The present plans can be considered a companion to Trattner’s publication, containing instructions for the placement, positions and exercises of the various regiments, battalions and companies of the army: the first and second grenadier company, “Leib-Compagnie” and the companies of “Knor Senior”, Wappler, Neumüller, Dichtelt, Major Engelhard, etc. This Major Engelhard is clearly the Obrist-Wachtmeister Baron von Engelhard, named on the title-page, for whom the present manu-script was produced. Engelhard August Baron van Leeuwen (Ingolstadt 1710–ca. 1795) was named Obrist-Wachtmeister in 1751 and General-Major in 1766, when he joined the Austrian General Staff. He retired in 1793 and must have died soon after. With 6 plans torn out (1, 24, 32, 33, 42 and 46) and the border at the foot of plan 38 torn off (not affecting the plan), but otherwise in good condition. Binding rubbed, spine damaged and restored (most of the gold lost). Remarkable colour formation plans for infantry exercises in the Imperial army.

Pioneering work on fortification design, building techniques and equipment,

with more than 150 woodcut illustrations15. LOR INI, Buonaiuto. Delle fortificationi ... libri cinque.Venice, Antonio Rampazetto, 1597 (colophon: 1596). Large 2º (34.5 × 25 cm). With a large engraved device on the title-page, woodcut printer’s device above the colophon, an engraved plate with a portrait of the author (often lacking), and more than 150 diagrams and woodcut illus-trations on the integral leaves, many full-page or double-page. Modern vellum in 17th-century style. € 3000

First edition, one of the 1597 issues (with a rare dedication), of the pioneering “first systematic course of instruction in all aspects of military architecture, and the first work to give measured [fortification] plans in its illustrations” (Breman), in the original Italian. It covers not only the design and building of fortifications, but also the mechanics and hydraulics of the equipment and machinery used, which are extensively illustrated in great detail. Buonaiuto Lorini (ca. 1542?–1611?), a Florentine nobleman, fought for the Spanish in Flanders from ca. 1568 and in 1582 was appointed engineer to the Venetian republic, where he established his reputation with fortifications to defend cities from the Ottoman Empire. The book discusses Lorini’s own and other fortifications in the Venetian republic, the Dalmation coast, Malta, Cyprus and elsewhere. Besides a wide variety of fortification plans, views, etc., the book illustrates cannons and their carriages, block and tackles, paddle wheel-driven machinery, hoists, jacks, pumps, carts, boats, a stamping mill, bridge building and much more. With ownership inscription and ink stamps. With a few of the largest woodcuts slightly shaved, some minor and mostly marginal water stains in the first two quires of the main text and an occasional marginal defect in the paper, but otherwise in very good condition. An essential work for any collec-tion of militaria, especially remarkable for the illustrations of machinery and equipment.

Including the different theories of 48 military engineers16. M A NDA R, Charles François. Premiere partie. Essai sur la fortification, ...Paris, Magimel, 1801. 8º. With 8 folding engraved plates. Contemporary tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine. € 800

First and only edition of a French fortification manual by the French architect Charles François Mandar (1757–1844). It starts with a history of the art of for-tification, and contains chapters on sieges, military “machines”, different types of fortification, defending fortresses, etc. The work closes with a very extensive chapter listing the different theories of 48 important and influential military engineers. Each engraved plate includes several smaller illustrations, showing profiles, different parts of a fortress, machines, walls, and many different forms of fortresses. The title-page calls this the first part, but no subsequent parts appear to have been published. With a deaccession label on paste-down. Text leaves slightly browned, with a small wormhole in the upper outer corner of the first few leaves, occasionally a small stain and some pencil marginal notes and pencil underlining. Binding heavily worn, hinges cracked and front board partly separated from binding, spine and corners damaged.

Richly illustrated guide to geometry and fortification, with numerous woodcut illustrations and 18 folding engraved plates

17. M A ROLOIS, Samuel. Oeuvres mathematicques. 4º. With 18 folding engraved plates, 1 engraved illustration in text, numerous woodcut illustrations and geometric figures in text, and some woodcut initials. Contemporary vellum, recased, with new endpapers. € 1650

First edition of a work combining two of the best known works of Samuel Marolois (1572–1627): one on geometry and the other on fortification. Marolois was a well-known Dutch engineer and mathematician. His Geometria presents a thorough pictorial course of all aspects of geometry and its application to measurement, proportion, surveying, per-spective, etc. It treats specifically the application of geometry to architecture and fortification. His Fortification ou archi-tecture militaire, is richly illustrated and an important source for the Dutch art of fortification at the beginning of the 17th century. The woodcut illustrations in the text show many corners of fortresses with measurements of their angles and various calculations, but also some ground plans and tools for constructing a fortress. The engraved plates show complete ground plans of fortresses; the last plate depicts different types of cannons.

First Latin editions, richly illustrated, of a classic geometry text and a pioneering work on fortification

18. M A ROLOIS, Samuel. Mathematicum opus absolutissimum: continens Geometriæ, Fortificationis, ...Amsterdam, Johannes Janssonius, 1638.Comprising:— M A ROLOIS, Samuel. Geometria Theoretica ac Practica.Amsterdam, Johannes Janssonius, 1633.— M A ROLOIS, Samuel. Artis muniendi, sive fortificationis pars prima[-secunda].Amsterdam, Johannes Janssonius, 1633. 2 works in 3 parts in 1 volume. 2º. With engraved title-page dated 1638, with the letterpress Latin title-slip pasted over the engraved French title, woodcut publisher’s device on 3 letterpress title-pages, 5 and 42 numbered engraved double-page plates in the first work, and 42 double-page engraved plates (numbered 1–40 plus “2e 14” and “2e 17”). Contemporary sheepskin parchment. € 4850

First Latin editions of two richly illustrated works, on geometry and on fortification, by Samuel Marolois (1572–1627), a French mathema-tician who published in the Netherlands. In 1614 Hendrik Hondius at the Hague had published Marolois’s four major mathematical works in French (on geometry, fortification, perspective and architecture). Janssonius brought out new editions in 1627, followed by Dutch editions (1628–1630) and finally Latin editions (1633), corrected and revised by Albert Girard. The present volume contains the geometry and fortification in the original 1633 printing, but reissued in 1638 with a general title-page originally engraved for Janssonius’s French edition of all four works and with a title-slip intended for the Latin edition of all four works. The first work provides a thorough and well-illustrated course in all aspects of geometry and its application to measurement, propor-tion, surveying, perspective, etc. The second was the most important and equally well-illustrated textbook on fortification, a field that the Dutch pioneered at the beginning of the 17th century.Very good copies of two important works, that on fortification helping to revolutionize that field.

Cockle 821, note; Jähns, pp. 1093–1095; STCN (1 copy of each work, also with the 1638 title-page, the Geometria lacking its title-page); cf. Cockle 139 (English edition of 1638).

Extremely rare broadside report published during the 1683 Ottoman siege of Vienna19. [MILITA R I A–V IEN NA– SIEGE]. [Report of the dire situation during the siege of Vienna, still in progress, incipit:] Obschon Röm. Keyserl. Broadside (29 × 32 cm). With a large woodcut decorated initial (a 53 mm gothic O), the text set in 2 columns with a band of cast fleurons across the head, another between the columns and a rule at the foot. € 4500

First edition of an extremely rare and possibly unique broadside (the only edition in the original German) printed and published near the end of the 1683 Ottoman siege of Vienna, apparently written by (and certainly based on fresh reports by) an eye-wit-ness, published at the most desperate moment of the siege, less than two weeks before Imperial and Polish reinforcements arrived to rescue the city. The report gives background information beginning with the 1664 peace treaty and unsuccessful attempts to renew it in 1682. But it centres on the events unfolding at the time of publication. In addition to details about the progression of the troops, it gives information about the fortifications, about artillery used by both sides and it accuses the Ottomans of barbarous deeds and espionage. It discusses the roles of the Turks, Tatars, Transylvanians, Wallacians and Moldavians. It also reflects recent technological advances, such as the use of a telescope and the Ottoman use of powerful explosive mines to breach the heavily fortified city walls. The band of fleurons at the head of the broadside and the rule at the foot have been partly trimmed off, but the broadside is otherwise in good condition, only slightly tattered at the edges, with a couple creases in the paper and one or two very small holes and spots. Only copy located of an account of the Ottoman siege of Vienna published while it was still in progress.

Temporary and permanent fortifications, illustrated with 58 double-page plates20. Karlsruhe and Freiburg, Herder, 1831. 2 volumes. 4º. With 58 double-page lithographed plates, each displaying several figures, and with 2 dou-ble-page lithographed title-pages. Contemporary tanned half sheepskin. € 1750

Enlarged second edition of a work on for-tification by the German General Moriz von Miller (1792–1866). The work is divided into two parts, the first mainly dealing with temporary or field fortification, the second with permanent fortification. It deals with different types and shapes of forts, their advantages and disadvantages, their mea-surements, their construction, and the attack and defence of these fortresses. The second part also includes fortification theories and methods of various writers, including Vauban, Cormontaigne, Dufour and Chasseloup-Laubat. Printed in the margins are the references to the corresponding plates and figures. The two parts are often bound in two separate volumes, each with its own plates. Here, however, the text of the two parts is bound in one volume, and the plates of the two parts are bound in an atlas volume, which can be consulted while reading the text volume. Both text and atlas volume foxed throughout. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremi-ties. Overall in very good condition.

He also discusses the Dutch, Italian and Spanish methods of forti-fication. The second volume deals with field fortification: where to set up camp, necessary tools and equipment, and the construction of different types of fortification.Lacking 2 leaves (pp. 451–454) in the first volume. Plate 34 of the second volume detached from bookblock, some plates in the first volume closely trimmed at the top margin, occasion-ally with some loss of the plate numbers, and the margins of the plates in both volumes frayed. Browned and foxed throughout, with some occasional ink and other stains. Binding rubbed along the extremities and sides chafed. Overall in good condition.

Nothing like this was ever printed before. Especially the period 1592–1612 is treated in great detail since the author included eyewitness reports on the Turkish invasions in the region. The author, a notary at the imperial court, was encouraged to write the work by his brother-in-law, Johann Sibmacher, a Nuremberg engraver and publisher, who was also responsible for the engraved plates in the first volume which includes a large engraved folding map of Hungary, Transylvania, and Moldavia (28×51 cm).The 30 double-page plates show a.o. the sieges and the fortifications of the following cities: Vienna, Zolnoch, Tocaky, Guyla, Zigeth, Sysegk, Palotta, Villeck, Raab, Comorra, Gran, Vizzegrad, Tergovist, Temeswar, Hatwan, Petrina, Tottis, Papa, Waitzen, Budapest (Ofen & Pest 2x), Tolna, Stulweisenburg, Canisha, the execution of count Hardeck and an execution at Canisha. The cities were either besieged by the Turkss or the Turkish cities by the Christians. The 26 full-page portraits show the Turkish sultans and the Hungarian military commanders and rulers.

Revolutionary ideas on fortification, with 48 splendid plates

27. TENSINI, Francesco. La fortificatione guardia difesa et espugnatione delle fortezzi esperimentata in diverse guerre.Venetia, Antonio Bariletti, 1630. Large folio (38 × 27.5 cm). With richly engraved allegorical frontispiece, engraved portrait of the author, and 48 fine engraved for-tification plates (11 double-page), by Fillippo Sadeler. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled fillets on boards, richly gold-tooled spine, Rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down, later endpapers. € 4500

Beautifully and extensively illustrated early work on the art and science of fortification, first published in 1624 and here in the 1630 issue of the 1624 edition. As the title indicates, it discusses the fortification, defence and conquest of fortresses used in various wars.Francesco Tensini (1581–1632 or later) had been a military engineer and officer in the service of the Duke of Bavaria, of the Spanish under Spinola against the Dutch before the Twelve Years’ Truce of 1609, and of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. When he wrote the present work in 1624 he was in the government of the city of Venice. Jähns suggests Tensini’s theories on fortification resemble those of his countryman Alessandro di Grotti, who had worked with him in the Bavarian army, suggesting they may have developed some of their innovative ideas together. But Van den Heuvel points out influ-ences from Dutch fortification. The Dutch introduced many new ideas in fortification during their war of independence from Spain, and Tensini experienced them as an opponent in at least the years 1600 to 1605.With the top 3 mm of the engraved title-page shaved, but otherwise in very good condition and with generous margins, with only an occasional marginal water stain. The binding has been rebacked, as noted, and shows some damage and some restorations, but remains good. A classic practical treatise on fortification, with 48 splendid plates.
