It is a great honor to begin my term as Executive Director ofthe New York State High School Football Coaches Association.

Following in the footsteps of Don Santini is going to be a tallorder. Don has been an incredible leader and continues to bevery passionate about promoting football in New York State. Ilook forward to working with our President, Nick Fitzgerald aswell as our treasurer who is invaluable, Bonnie Mangicaro.

The executive committee works hard to provide incentives forits membership as well as recognizing HS football players.

On July 8th and 9th we completed our second annual 7-on-7state wide championships at Ithaca College. We continue tohave a large school tournament on one day and a small schooltournament the next. Teams are invited from all the twelve sec-tions throughout the state. We are proud to continue having theArmy, Marines, Buffalo Bills and Spalding as sponsors whichallows us to operate the weekend with no costs to the partici-pants.

During the first week of May we continue to operate five com-bines throughout the state. This past year we tested approxi-mately 1,700 athletes. From these combines we select 300 ath-

letes to come to Ithaca during the championship weekend to par-ticipate in a skill showcase with all instruction provided by collegecoaches. Combine scores are posted on our NYSHSFCA website giving access to participants as well as college coaches.

Our 19th annual coach’s clinic will be held at Turning Stoneon February 8, 9, 10, 2018. We are always seeking suggestionsfrom our membership throughout the state regarding how we canmake this a better experience for all involved. We also hold ourannual awards banquet during the clinic weekend recognizingplayers of the year, coaches of the year, scholar athletes, 12thman award, media award and Service award.

Besides belonging to your professional organization our exec-utive committee recently added another benefit to the member-ship.

Starting May 1, 2017, all members will have a $1,000,000Commercial General Liability Policy issued by the NationalOrganization of Coaches Association Directors. The policy willprovide general liability coverage to all members. Loomis andLapann, Inc. out of Glens Falls, NY will be administering the pro-gram. They can be reached at www.loomislapann.com or 1-800-566-6479. To obtain your insurance certificate, all you must do isgo to the website on or after May 1, or call the office and theywill have a list of membership names and be able to send a copyof the certificate.

With the season rapidly approaching I hope that you all havea safe and rewarding 2017 season.

Yours in Football,Lyle Dixon, Executive Director, NYSHSFCA

three-day clinic in February at Turning Stone Resort in Verona,

New York. Coaches were urged to get involved in Fuel Up to Play

Coaches attending February’s New York StateHigh School Football Coaches Association Clinicat Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY, got thelowdown on Fuel Up to Play 60 – an in-school fit-ness and nutrition program. The Fuel Up to Play60 program encourages physical activity andhealthy eating. During the three-day clinic, whichbegan February 2, 2017, coaches were shownhow nutrition education among athletes is essen-tial for maximizing performance. The Fuel Up toPlay 60 program is a fun and easy way to makesure athletes are putting their health and wellnessat the forefront, fueling their bodies with propernutrition. In addition to benefitting a school’s foot-ball team, Fuel Up to Play 60 also benefits theschool’s student body, as student athletes arerole models to other students. It’s a win-win forcoaches to get involved in Fuel Up to Play 60 andencourage their athletes to participate, too.

American Dairy Association and Dairy Council(ADADC) sponsored the Awards Banquet, onFebruary 5, which honored players and coachesfor distinguishing themselves as serious competi-tors, academicians, and role models. Guestspeaker at the banquet, ADANE CEO Rick Naczi, talked about the Fuel Up to Play 60 program anddairy farmers’ partnership with high school athlet-ic programs, including Chocolate Milk as theOfficial Beverage of New York State Public HighSchool Athletic Association Championships.

One of the players to watch this season is Medina WRJalen Cooper, who is entering his senior season.

Cooper is 6-5 and 180 pounds and has already verballyaccepted a scholarshipoffer to play football atthe University of Toledo.

Medina coach EricValley says that whatsets Cooper apart is hisspeed.

“On ce he gets going,he has a stride that can’tbe matched,” Valley said.

Cooper finished 3rd atthe NYS ChampionshipTrack Meet in the 200-meter dash. He finished4th in the 100.

“When he gets theball, kids on defensecan’t get an angle onhim,” Valley said. “Thekids we play against arejust not used to that kindof speed. He has a gearthat most high schoolkids don’t have.”

Cooper is a 3-yearstarter for Medina.

In 2016, he caught 22passes for 339 yards and6 TDs. He also rushed 30times for 403 yards and 7more TDs. Cooper alsoreturned 2 kickoffs and 1punt for TDs.

In all, Cooper rackedup 1,213 all-purposeyards for the Mustangs.

Medina is a small townin Orleans County, afarming community abouthalfway between Rochester and Niagara Falls.

“We are a Class B team,” Valley said. “We have beenpretty competitive year-in and year-out but it’s been 20years since we had anyone go on to play Division I collegefootball. That really doesn’t happen very often in a smalltown like ours.”

To understand how far Cooper has traveled to get to thispoint, you have to understand where he came from.

“When he first came here, you could tell he had raw tal-ent,” Valley said. “But he had never played organized sportsbefore. He tried out for the JV basketball team when he was

in the 8th grade but his mother wouldn’t let him play.”Cooper’s family had come to the rural Orleans County

from the Southside of Chicago. His Englewood neighbor-hood had approximately40,000 residents inabout 3 square miles.Englewood has a pover-ty rate of about 44 per-cent.

“Englewood is one ofthe toughest places inChicago,” Cooper said.“You hear gun shots allthe time. Sometimes it’sjust because a kid waswearing the wrong colorsin the wrong place.”

To move to Medina, atown with less than5,800 people, wasindeed a culture shockfor Cooper.

“It was weird,” hesaid. “People here weretalkative and interactedmore with each other.Kids have a lot ofinvolvement in sports. Ididn’t have to be soaware of my surround-ings like I did in Chicago. It’s definitely different.”

Cooper’s father is cur-rently in prison.

“He was in prison inChicago but the last Iheard he was inCalifornia,” Cooper said.

Other family membershave been, or currentlyare, in prison.

“His home life wasdefinitely not optimum,” Valley said. “There were someissues at home. He was behind in school and had someproblems health-wise.”

The school stepped forward where they could... but therewas a lot of chaos in Cooper’s life.

“It was just a very volatile situation at his house,” Valleysaid. “He has eight brothers and sisters. It was a very toxicsituation and he would rather run away than argue, so hehad run away a few times.”

When Cooper was in the 8th grade, the family’s house

Jalen Cooper is a 3-year starter at Medina. The senior WR isone of WNY’s top recruits and has already verbally committedto Toledo University.

burned down.“He was left with pretty much the clothes he wore to

school that day,” Valley said. “Our small community steppedup in a big way for that family. We did a lot of fundraisersand got them new clothes and new appliances. We gotthem into a new house. Jalenreally wasn’t used to strangersstepping up and helping out.”

For Cooper, this amazedhim.

“This community cametogether and donated a lot ofthings for us,” he said. “It wasa real eye-opener. There arecaring people out there in theworld. Not everyone is evil.Medina is a really great com-munity.”

But, while Cooper’s familyhad a new place, it was stillvolatile.

“My mom was a youngmom with a lot of kids,” hesaid. “She really didn’t knowhow to express herself. Italways came out angry.”

The pattern of fights andJalen running away continued.

“He would call me, some-times at 6 in the morning,”Valley said. “He would ask meto come pick him up, he wasout in the rain at the schooland it was locked.”

Valley would make thedrive and pick the boy up.

“I would bring him back tomy house and get him some-thing to eat,” he said. “Hewould stay here until thingscooled down at home.”

Cooper did come out for the JV football team as an 8thgrader.

“He didn’t like it very much,” Valley said. “It was his firstorganized sport and he wasn’t used to that kind of structure. The rigors of practice, getting in shape, it just wasn’t some-thing he was mentally used to.”

But, he stuck it out and, by the end of the year, seemedto be enjoying himself.

But, while school was a safe haven, home was not. Finally, Cooper’s home situation reached the point where

he didn’t want to stay anymore. And, when his mothermoved to Lockport, he begged her to stay in Medina.

He had run away one more time and called Valley to pickhim up.

Valley, who was getting ready to leave town for a familytrip, delayed his departure to pick Cooper up and took himto the weight room at the high school

There, they met with assistant football coach EricHellwig.

“I was explaining to Coach Hellwig that Jalen needed aplace to stay,” Valley said. “We were going out of town.”

Hellwig had known Cooper for three years, so he under-stood the situation.

“He came over to the highschool with coach Valley,”Hellwig said. “Eric wasexplaining the situation andmy son Jason just spoke upand said, ‘Have him stay withus.’ I said ‘OK’ and then Ithought I should probably callmom.”

Hellwigs wife, Sandie, hadtwo sons and was heavilyinvolved with the Medinasports scene.

“She keeps the scorebookfor basketball,” Eric Hellwigsaid, “so she knew Jalen. Also, with two boys, she wasused to having a bunch ofboys in the house anyway. What was one more?”

So, what was supposed tobe temporary, became farmore than that.

“Jalen is very aware thathis family is not good forhim,” Valley said. “He under-stands that his home was nota safe place to be.”

After a year of staying withthe Hellwig’s, the family wasgiven legal custody of Jalen.

“We have joint custodywith his mother,” Hellwig said,“and we also have residentialcustody. We can oversee his

academics and any legal issues that come up with him. Hismother finally agreed with the arrangement because Jalenconvinced her it was the best thing for him.”

Jalen was initially out of sorts with the Hellwigs. Comingfrom a noisy, raucous family with nine children to a quiethome was a shock.

“In my house you had to yell if you wanted someone tohear you,” Jalen said. “But ta the Hellwigs it was so quiet. They just have Jason and Adam. It was strange.”

Eric Hellwig says that he and his wife had no hesitationto letting Jalen stay on a more permanent basis.

“It’s funny how it worked out,” Hellwig said. “Everyonereally hit it off. My two sons loved having him and he lovedbeing here. It just kind of turned into a permanent thing.”

It wasn’t a walk in the park for Jalen.

Million continued from page 9

“There were some issues,” Hellwig said. “He was behindin school but he worked really hard to catch up. He had afew health things to be worked out. He needed a lot of den-tal work done.”

But, as a result of the stability, Jalen began to thrive.“He was a low 70s student when he came to us,” Hellwig

said. “He’s almost a 90-average student now. He reallycaught up physically and emotionally.”

And, as Jalen began to grow academically and emotion-ally, he began to thrive athletically.

“He can fly,” Valley said. “He’s big and he’s athletic. Hewas starting to get some real interest from some big places.Coaches would watch his film and then watch him play bas-ketball, too. His athleticism just pops out at you.”

For his part, Hellwig said there was no hesitation on thepart of any family member about taking in a child with somany problems.

“Not once,” he said. “There was no hesitation on any ofour part. We all some somebody who was dying to be suc-cessful. He felt like he needed to be some place else so thathe could succeed in life, not just sports.”

Hellwig also had seen what kind of person Jalen was.“We have a pretty trusting nature,” he said, ‘but he was

never in trouble in school, Every teacher who ever had him, every secretary and every custodian was willing to do what-ever they could tohelp him. Everyonewho ever talks withhim talks about hisMillion Dollar smile. You can’t help butlike him. He is agenerally nice per-son who wanted tosucceed.”

As Jalen’s juniorseason of footballcame to an end, therecruiting processstarted to heat up.

“He was gettinginterest fromBoston College,”Valley said. “PaulPasqualoni washere. Brian Dabol, the offensive coor-dinator fromAlabama was here.Washington State,Rutgers and UConnwere all interested.”

Even Valley was overwhelmed by the attention.“I played football at Cortland,” Valley said. “So, to have

Paul Pasqualoni there was pretty cool. And Jalen wasecstatic. He was very excited about the whole thing.”

Despite his excitement, Cooper never changed as a per-son.

“If you talk to him,you would have noclue he has had somany people fawningover him,” Valleysaid. “He runs oursummer workoutsand runs camps forlittle kids. He is agenerally nice per-son. He’s so person-able. He just lovesmeeting people.”

In the end,Cooper committed tothe first school thatcontacted him.

“Toledo was oneof the first to showinterest in him,”Valley said. “Theymade it clear rightfrom the get-go thatthey wanted him. Ithink that made agreat impression onJalen.”

Now, the Hellwigs have to prepare for their “third son” toget through his senior year and prepared for college.

“This was a big adjustment for everyone,” Hellwig said,“and it’s very cool to see how it worked out. Both of my sonssaid that this was the best experience that they could havehad. They gained a younger brother and it made themappreciate everything that they had too. We have not hadone bad situation in 4 years. It’s been great.”

For Cooper, he feels like he needed a miracle and got it.“I’ve had two different lifestyles,” Cooper said. “The way

my original parents lived and the way the Hellwigs live aretwo different worlds. I’m the luckiest kid in the world. Mostkids that are in my shoes are going to the wrong place orgoing nowhere.”

Cooper doesn’t have a negative feeling at all.“Now, it’s all positive in my life,” he said. “I’m extremely

lucky. I’m one in a million because something like this doesnot happen often.”

He says that he is motivated to not blow his goldenopportunity.

“I’m not going to let anyone slow me down or disappointthe Hellwigs,” he said. “I want to show my little brothers andsisters that they can get a better life too.”

Cooper stills sees his mother and holds no grudgesagainst her.

“I forgive my mom for everything 100 percent,” he said.“She was young and didn’t know how to raise kids. I feel likeshe’s definitely changing and becoming a different mother.”

And, even though he is no longer in Chicago, he stilloccasionally hears gunshots.

“In Medina it’s just somebody shooting deer,” he said.

St. John Fisher coach Paul Vosburgh will be enteringhis 27th season as the leader of the Cardinals program. He is now the most-senior head college coach in NewYork State.

Vosburgh has led theCardinals to an unprece-dented string of successthe last decade.

St. John Fisher haswon 86 games, whileadvancing to the post-season in each of thelast thirteen years.

In 2006, the Cardinalswon the NCAA DivisionIII East Region andadvanced to the nationalsemifinals, while in 2013and 2007, Fisher bowedout in the national quar-terfinals. The Cardinalsalso made the nationalquarterfinals in 2011.

But, while Vosburghhas built a programclose to joining thenation’s elite programs, itwasn’t always this way.

Frankly, it’s been along and winding road.

Vosburgh playedoffensive guard and line-backer at tiny DeSalesCatholic High School inLockport, NY.

He was named All-Catholic three straightyears.

“I wasn’t very big,”Vosburgh said, “but Iguess I did okay.”

Vosburgh also wrestled at DeSales, helping the teamwin a league championship in his senior year.

He graduated from DeSales in 1971 and went on toplay football at William Penn University an NAIA school inIowa. He was named an all-conference linebacker atWilliam Penn.

“We won a championship and went to a couple of bowlgames while I was there,” he said.

Vosburgh graduated in 1975 and returned home toLockport.

“I was an assistant coach to Les Dugan at DeSales,” he

said. “I enjoyed it but I still didn’t know about becoming acoach as a career.

After a season at DeSales, Vosburgh landed a grad-assistant coaching posi-tion at Pittsburgh Statein Kansas.

“I knew I wanted tobe involved in football,”Vosburgh said, “butafter that year atPittsburgh State, I knewthis was the path I want-ed to take.”

Vosburgh returned toDeSales once again, this time as head foot-ball coach and athleticdirector at the school.

In 1981, he led thesmall catholic school toa league title and a 9-0record.

Lockport’s large pub-lic school also finished9-0 that season, and thetown went crazy withexcitement over thegridiron success fromboth schools.

“There was a lot ofexcitement in town thatyear,” he said. “It was ahuge deal in Lockport.”

Just eight years later,DeSales was forced toclose the high school, though the elementaryschool is still in opera-tion - and thriving.

“I was really sadwhen DeSales closed,”

Vosburgh said. “I loved it there as a student and as ateacher and coach. We had a great tradition there.”

Vosburgh had also met his wife, Kathleen, while teach-ing at DeSales.

“She was a DeSales grad too,” Vosburgh said, “but shewas three years behind me. We didn’t meet until we wereboth teachers there.”

Shortly after the undefeated 1981 season, Vosburghwas hired as a defensive coordinator back at William

Paul Vosburgh is the longest-tenured college coach in New

York State. He has led the Cardinals program since 1991. This

will be his 27th season at St. John Fisher.

Penn. He was the DC for two seasons before moving onto Heidelberg College in Ohio.

His stay in Ohio lasted just one season as he was hiredback at William Penn, this time as head coach.

“That was an exciting time for me,” Vosburgh said.“First head coaching job at acollege program.”

He stayed at William Pennfor three seasons beforemoving to Emporia StateUniversity in Kansas as anassistant head coach andDefensive Coordinator.

“It paid more money,”Vosburgh said. “I lovedWilliam Penn but we had afamily to think about.”

Vosburgh stayed atEmporia State for 4 seasons, where he was the DefensiveCoordinator for future DallasCowboy Leon Lett.

“Leon was a great player,”Vosburgh said, “and we’re stillfriends.”

Lett would become famousin Super Bowl 27 when hepicked up a fumble and randown the field. Just before hereached the end zone,Buffalo’s Don Beebe caughthim from behind and knockedthe ball out of his hands.

“I felt bad for Leon,”Vosburgh said. “He’s a greatguy but he got caught hotdogging on that play.”

During his time atEmporia, Vosburgh beganlooking to return to WesternNew York.

“I told Kathleen that if something opened in WesternNew York, I was going to apply for it,” Vosburgh said.

In 1991, the Vosburgh’s returned home, when Paul washired as head coach at St. John Fisher.

At the time, St. John Fisher was a lowly program withno facilities, no recruits and no hope. Vosburgh was hiredjust one week before training camp opened and the team, predictably, went winless. In fact, after the first four games,Fisher had yet to score a touchdown.

“In those lean years, we had some good athletes butwe didn’t have enough of them,” Vosburgh said.“Recruiting was very difficult. We would talk to every kidwe could but they weren’t listening to us.”

The Cardinals played on a field that didn’t even mea-sure up to most high school programs in Rochester. Thefield was surrounded by a rope.

“There was a cinder track, no bleachers and a woodenpress box. It didn’t even look like a high school field,”Vosburgh said.

When he was hired, Vosburgh had been told that a newfacility was in the plans.

“It was discouraging attimes,” he said. “It took awhile but finally Dr. Keoughcame in and got it done.”

The new SJF footballfacility opened in 2000 and itwas the top facility in NewYork State. Shortly after that, the school was chosen tohost the Buffalo Bills trainingcamp.

The last three collegePresidents we have hadhave really grown theschool,” Vosburgh said. “Thewhole college just startedgrowing all at once.”

And, recruits were sud-denly taking Vosburgh’s callsand visiting the campus.

“We had always been agood school academically,”Vosburgh said. “We just did-n’t have the support or thefacilities for football - or anyathletics really. The newfacility allowed us to recruit adifferent kind of athlete.”

And the wins followed.“It was an exciting time at

Fisher,” Vosburgh said. “Thewhole campus grew. Wehave 24 athletic teams now.We have 2,700 students andjust brought in a huge fresh-

man class. You look at our campus now compared to 1999and it’s way different.”

Last season, the Cardinals finished 8-3 and ranked25th in the nation.

Vosburgh says that was a disappointment.“We are trying to be an elite program now,” he said.

“We are trying to recruit kids that are borderline scholar-ship players. We want to win our conference and go as faras we can in the playoffs. We have never made it past thesemifinals but that’s still our goal every year.”

Vosburgh is now 63 and a 5-time grandfather, with his6th grandchild due in February.

He has no plans at all to retire anytime soon.“I’m focused on this year,” he said. “Football is exciting.

I enjoy coaching and I enjoy being with young men. I lookforward going to work everyday. Actually, I’ve never had ajob because I enjoy this too much for it to be a job.”

In January of 2014, the NYS Football CoachesAssociation and I embarked on an ambitious project.

We wanted to publish a “Recruiting Watch List” forhigh school players from across New York State.

We hoped to accomplish two things with our list.First, we want to create some excitement about high

school football - create some “buzz”, so to speak. Foralmost a century, the “Hot Stove Talk” has generatedexcitement about baseball in the dead of winter. Talkabout the NFL Draftcomsumes fans of theNFL in April. Campusesacross the country holdspring football games.

We thought that wecould do the same forhigh school football.

The second thing wewanted to accomplishwas to get our kidsnames out into the pub-lic so that college coach-es will take a look atthem.

Let’s be honest... New York State lags far behindTexas, Florida and Ohio when it comes to getting foot-ball scholarships - or even exposure - for our own kids.

We thought that if we could just get a “semi-official”list into the hands of the college coaches, it would helpthem in their pursuit of kids that have the talent to playafter high school.

Inside this issue, is our fourth Watch List. We havelisted every high school football player who was nomi-nated to be on the New York Recruiting Watch List.

On this Watch List are the names of more than 1,500players from 250 schools from across the state. Theseare kids that college football coaches should take alook at.

We have broken the list down into geographical sec-tions and broken them down further by school. Kids arelisted by position with their heights, weights and theircurrent grade in school.

Eligible players include incoming freshman, sopho-

mores, juniors and seniors.

What does this list mean? This list does not mean a single player named will

receive a scholarship to play football. In fact, most ofthe kids on this list will not play football at any level -never mind earn a football scholarship.

The fact is, New York State had just 32 players earnscholarships to play football last year.

So, this is not a list of 4- and 5-star recruits. It is simply a list of players that, right now, are talent-

ed enough to be looked at by college coaches... andnothing more.

This is a guide to help college coaches get started inrequesting film, doing their background checks andmaking inquiries about grades on players that might beable to play for them.

If my player is not on the list, does that meanhe’s not good enoughto play college foot-ball?

Not necessarily.It means that right

now, he is not beingrecruited. But, somekids grow an incredibleamount between theirfreshman and sopho-more years. Kids canstart hitting the weightroom. Kids can startworking hard at camps.

Some kids, who are less than impressive as sopho-mores, surprise everyone during their junior season andbecome stand outs.

The best advice a player could get is... if you are noton the list this year, work hard so you can be on the listnext year.

How did we go about getting the information? An email was sent to every high school football

coach in the state. The email was followed-up with aphone call. After the phone call, a 2nd email was sent.

(If your school is not listed, it’s because we receivedno reply to our inquries from the coach or AthleticDirector.)

We have listed every nominated player from 8thgrade to the 12th grade. Hopefully, college coaches willfind our Recruiting Watch List a help in finding playersfrom our state.
