President’s Message

Follow us on:

As 2014 has drawn to a close it is perhaps appropriate to touch on what was achieved in the last 12 months. The New South Wales Chapter has had a solid energetic team of people that brought it across the line nancially, although our year concludes 30th June, we need to be both vigilant and creative for a while longer.

A sincere thank you to everyone who participated in the annual awards dinner by submitting luminaires and designs and particularly to all the sponsors. We changed the rules a little and by doing so changed expectations and will continue to change some more in 2015. Most importantly our guests for the evening have asked to be involved in future activities of the IES which is a positive result.

The relationship fostered with Guide Dogs NSW and ACT is healthy. We certainly appreciate the time and eort by Gigi, Sarah, Helen and Jennifer to provide members some special insight to their experience of the world at night. It gives me pleasure to indicate that due to the nancial success of the annual awards dinner we, (that is sponsors and attendees) were able to gift $2 from each seat ($812) to Guide Dogs NSW and ACT as a token of appreciation for their assistance.Whilst the number of technical meetings this year was not large the presentations were very high calibre. There is a lot of competition for people’s attention, providing on-going education and also use of their ‘spare time’. The content and number of meetings is currently under review as it will be an extra challenge with SPARC in the middle of the year and also the restrictions placed on the NSW CMC re events held before and after SPARC.

The Government is producing new energy management reduction programs on lighting. The rst E3 on incandescent, halogen and compact uorescent is currently out for comment closing 13th February 2015. Early in 2015 there will be a commercial sector document and following that there will be a document dedicated to LED. Please make the time to understand these proposals and most importantly provide feedback both directly to Government and indirectly via the IESANZ as the IESANZ will also submit feedback as an organisation, otherwise, you might nd that suddenly the available light sources have changed and only another battle on Watts over-rides all issues relating to appropriate lighting design. Avoid the crush, make the time to investigate, be involved and make a dierence.

Additional considerations for 2015 include that 2015 is the United Nations International Year of Light and it is also the 85th anniversary of the IES in Australia. Planning needs to be brought forward and adherence to time schedules will be important. The awards entries will be brought forward and the closing dates of Midnight Friday 25th May 2015 for all entries except the Lighting Representative award which is Midnight Friday 7th August 2015 will be more closely adhered to.

The New South Wales Chapter of the IESANZ will be reaching out and working with other organisations in a collaborative way, but more of that in future Sidelights issues. Speaking of which – isn’t it fabulous – the new format of Sidelights? An excellent team of people are behind this. The importance of building teams should never be under estimated.

Enough IES! The IESANZ NSW Chapter and myself would like to welcome you back from your summer break, as we look forwardto an exciting year ahead.

Tim Shotbolt

2015 - International Year of Light

Follow us on:

In proclaiming an International Year focusing on the topic of light science and its applications, the United Nations has recognized the importance of raising global awareness about how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges in energy, education, agriculture and health. Light plays a vital role in our daily lives and is an imperative cross-cutting discipline of science in the 21st century. It has revolutionized medicine, opened up international communication via the Internet, and continues to be central to linking cultural, economic and political aspects of the global society.

An International Year of Light is a tremendous opportunity to ensure that international policymakers and stakeholders are made aware of the problem-solving potential of light technology. We now have a unique opportunity to raise global awareness of this.

Parklight 2014 Our annual Parklight event was attended by over 60 enthusiastic lighting practitioners, set against the \dark night sky within the Sydney Observatory grounds. Attendees were provided with an enlightened presentation by Toner Stevenson (Manager Sydney Observatory) discussing dark sky gazing, constellations, and the importance of reducing light pollution.

Participants were separated into ve teams, each receiving an assigned team name, location, a varied assortment of luminaires, accessories including gels and their imaginations. The teams were given 1 hour to create a visually inspiring lighting installation revolving around their constellation name.

One by one the teams presented their installations to their fellow competitors who then via a secret ballot voted for a winning team. Teams Aquila and Pisces tied in the overall vote, so a runo vote was required with Pisces taking home the prize and bragging rights.

A very special thanks to the Sydney Observatory for allowing us to use their magnicent grounds and to all our sponsors: ERCO, Euroluce, JSB Lighting, Jade Cross, Light Project, Light Culture, Versalux, & Zumtobel Group.

“As a designer you should be concerned” by Tim ShotboltPosted by: IES NSW - Ales VasendaI write this as I am quite disappointed in what is being proposed and call uponfellow lighting professionals not to accept an unnecessary imposition when adequate energy performance restrictions are already in place in Section J6 of the BCA. Graduate Certicate / Diploma / MastersDesign Science (Illumination Design)

Our entire visual experience depends on light. It has a profound impact on both the function and aesthetics ofarchitectural spaces. The Illumination Design program oers strong technical education in human visual perception, methods for quantifying light, lighting technologies and issues of sustainability. This eld is enjoying rapid and exciting technological innovations and this program emphasizes the knowledge and critical thinking skills to enable students to adapt to ‐ and even lead ‐ future changes.

As a student of Illumination Design, you will develop your expertise in lighting for architectural and urban environments. You will understand how rapidly‐evolving sustainable lighting technologies are changing industry practise and are contributing to new opportunities for creative applications of modern materials, colours and technologies. You will understand the relationship between lighting and allied‐built environment disciplines and how the interaction of optics, psychology and physiology determines an occupant’s perception and appreciation of lighting choices.Upon successful completion of this masters coursework program, students are qualied for full membership in the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand, subject to the required practical experience.

Master of Design studiosLighting Design

The Lighting studio provides a solid understanding of the physics and human factors of lighting, through extensive hands‐on experiences and studies of wider contextual considerations that relate to lighting design.

This studio is structured to give students the opportunity to cultivate and share knowledge through research, experimentation, collaboration and communication; to shape and continually improve the future of the lighting design profession, through challenging the traditional use of lighting in the built environment.Subjects covered throughout the three semesters include: the change of light in nature, time‐dependent dynamics and control, observation and analysis of lighting and behavioural patterns and interdependencies in the built environment, perceptual psychology, visual attributes & modes of appearance. Students are expected to have basic CAD and 3DCAD program knowledge.
