    27 Years of Service

    December January 2014

In Making a difference in and for our com-

munities, SICO members volunteered to staff

the Salvation Armys Angel Tree Project atPearlridge Shopping Center. Needy families,

seniors and individuals entered their wishes

on a form with an angel picture that were

placed on a Christmas Tree. The public came

by, picked any number of Angels, purchased

the gift/s, returned them to the desk and were

presented with a receipt. Pictured are the

    morning staffers.

The Esene family shown is but one of the

many who made wishes come true. There

were also single military men, a youngwoman who had been a recipient, and the

most generous Rodrigues family who do-nated 69 gifts. President Rene posted their

story on the SICO Facebook page with theirpicture.

Chair Susan did all the shopping for the

donations from SICO. Big Mahalo to Susan. This was such a heartwarming project.

What an awesome SICO 2013, busy with activities and

happy to make a positive difference in the lives of women

and girls. WHOO Award given to Zoe Tanaka in Decem-

ber for her social networking promoting SICO! Thank you

also to Ellen Kazama and Ann Freed for their achieve-

    ments!

Starting 2014 with a big bang! Big speakers at our big

National Human Awareness Day Forum on Jan. 11th!

We are thankful to Mililani Buddhist Womens Assoc.

and SICO for hosting the event. Please come!

Big thanks to Marilyn Lee for stepping in as President-

Elect, and Zoe Tanaka as Director. I appointed them due to

the vacancy left by Ellen Kazama who resigned due to per-

    sonal reasons.

Finally, Councilwoman and Honolulu Soroptimist Ann

Kobayashi is sponsoring 10 of us to attend and help at the

Japanese Women Societys Leadership Summit on Feb. 13-

14 at Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. Lets go!

    NEW MISSION STATEMENT

Improving the lives of women and girls through pro-

grams leading to social and economic empowerment.Christmas Fellowship

Is it possible for any group of women to have so much

    fun together! YES, it is!!

In spite of the raging rain, thunder and lightning, we

forged ahead to celebrate the season with food, FUN, a

gift exchange and caroling. Buca di Beppo should have

paid us for the entertainment. We even sang the tradi-

tional Happy Birthday to a young boy whose father and

mother were very appreciative. The boys smile said it all.

The collage of pictures below was taken by a professionalphotographer.

    However, the Ehime Maru

    Monument clean up had to

    be cancelled due to the

    weather. President Rene did

    visit the monument after the

    luncheon and placed a poin-

settia in tribute to the crew

of the Ehime Maru. The rain

had done a good job of cleaning.

Introducing Two of Three New Members

    Meryle Hirotsu

    Math Curriculum and Instruction

Iwas born and raised inHawaii and attended Wahiawa

    Elementary, Leilehua High

    School, Punahou, and the Uni-

versity of Hawaii. I moved to the mainland and lived in

California (LA) for 40 years. I taught high school math

for 34 years for the LA Unified School District.

I retired in 2004 and moved back to Oahu in 2006 af-

ter my husband passed away. I have one daughter who

lives in Oregon with her husband and two children. My

grandsons are 8 and 11 years old.

I am an active member of HCTM (Hawaii Council of

Teachers of Mathematics) and have been for 7 years

and am currently the VP and Chair of HCTM Confer-

ence in 2014. I recently resigned from OML (Oahu

Math League) to get ready to make more time for the

Soroptimist Club. I was recruited by Jane Murakami

and hope to learn how to be a more productive member.

I work part-time as a math lecturer at Leeward CC. I

also am pursuing my third Masters degree in Math Edu-

cation with the University of Texas on-line and hope to

begin working on a doctorate next July 2014.

My hobbies include raising orchids and my dogs. I

also love to watch Korean drama on TV.

    Linda Lau Ah Hee

I met Kumu LeimomiLorene Hopkins last

year, a as a new haumana

    (student) of Halau Hula

    Ho'okahi Pu'uwai me ka

    Lokahi. After several

months, she invited me to a SIWFI meeting. The timingseemed perfect because it was the answer to 1) what

should I do now that I'm recently retired? and 2) it ful-

filled a childhood desire! As a curious 9 year old, I came

across the word 'Soroptimist', and quickly looked up its

meaning. I remember saying, "cool one day I'm going to

do that"! Wow, God's plan really is revealed in His time!I was blessed to work as an account executive at

HMSA for 20 years, and retired Sept 2011. Now I am

seeking to develop health and wellness counseling skills

to assist the baby boomer community.

I am grateful for my husband Byron and proud of my

daughter Kyrra who truly enhance my existence! They do

an amazing job of keeping laughter and love in our chal-

lenging lives. For fun, I enjoy watching our dogs' silly

antics, reading non fiction (anything that grabs my atten-

tion), hiking our beautiful 'aina' and dream of traveling to

the Holy Lands and Greek Isles. I am passionate about

helping the abused and rejected and/or those who sufferdue to social injustice.

    Bobby Benson Center Luau

With another impending storm brewing, these members made their

way to the luau. Angie included SICO by having the members help

distribute the goodie bags to the clients. The thank yous and smiles

    were shy and genuine.

The staff and clients put together an onolicious meal and an incompa-

rable program of Polynesian dances and fun antics. The program

closed in the dark with fire knife dancers.

There was only a little bit of rain and the storm never materialized for

    which we were grateful.
